News and Notes about Day 1:
Kevin Kennington of Laservision won the Home Run Derby Wednesday night over Brett Helmer, Kevin Filby, and Chris Larsen. Kennington put on quite a show with some absolute bombs in the last two rounds.
Play began at 9 AM Thursday morning on 8 different fields. The games were relatively low scoring on the big fields and 64 games were played by the league record 38 Nationwide Conference USSSA teams.
Still in the winner's bracket is Resmondo and Laservision, the top two teams in the country. Resmondo rolled through their games easily while Laservision was nearly upset by GTL/Doerflinger in their third game of the tournament when GTL failed to score in the bottom of the 7th inning and Laservision escaped 21-20. Then in the nightcap Laservision outlasted a stubborn Nordkap/Suncoast Reebok team 46-41 as the game ended with a controversial runner interference call.
Resmondo and Laservision will meet Friday in the winners bracket championship game at 1:30 PM. Play will begin in the loser's bracket on two fields (Stadium and Osceaola F1) at 9 AM. GTL will take on Buzini on the stadium field at 9 AM and the winner will face Shoppe. Demarini Dirty will renew their rivalry with Reds Astros on Field 1 with the winner taking on Nordkap. Then play will exclusively move to the stadium for the last 7 games.
Late Thursday night, Demarini used a walk off bases loaded single by Adam Rockoff to beat Sonny's in extra innings 14-13 and Reds Astros used a walk off gap shot by Chad Mullins to beat Linedrive 17-16.
'B' teams were impressive as two are still alive in the tournament (Reds and Buzini). Also Baugh Ford, OC Swats, Team Adiktiv, Precision, and DEI were 'B' teams that made it to the final 16 with some great play throughout the first day.
