Wounded Warrior Amputee Softball Team to play in Long Island, N.Y. on May 19 and 20, 2018

RESTON, Va. – The Wounded Warrior Amputee Softball Team (WWAST) is set to return to Long Island, N.Y. the weekend of May 17-20.

“It is very exciting to be playing in Long Island for the fifth time,” said WWAST Executive Director and US Army Retired Veteran, Dennis Wince. “Working with the event organizer, Joe Bartumioli, I know everyone will be in store for another great event.  We continue to see firsthand how patriotic this community is and how it appreciates Veterans, especially our Nation’s Wounded Warriors. It is very gratifying to see the recognition for those that have served our country.”

On Thursday, May 17, several WWAST players will be playing in a fundraising golf outing at Rock Hill Golf and Country Club in Manorville, N.Y.  On Friday, May 18, WWAST players will speak at several schools and civic organizations to share their words of inspiration.  On Saturday, May 19, there will be a free clinic for children under 12 starting at 9:00 a.m. ET, followed by a Home Run Derby at 11:15 a.m. ET at St. John the Baptist High School in West Islip, N.Y.  A game will follow at Otsego Park on Commack Road in Huntington, N.Y. against veterans from the Suffolk County Police Department, with the Opening Ceremony beginning at 4:00 p.m. ET. A postgame meet-and-greet and BBQ with the players at the Commack New York Fire Department will be a $5 donation, while food from Texas Roadhouse and beer will also be sold from 7:15-10 p.m. ET. On Sunday, May 20, the team will play in another game at Medford Athletic Complex against the Long Island All-Stars to close out the weekend with the Opening Ceremony set to begin at 11:30 a.m. ET.  Admission to games is free and fans are encouraged to bring a lawn chair.

The WWAST is made up of brave men and women, both veterans and active duty soldiers, from all service branches, who have sustained injuries resulting in amputation.  Through extensive rehabilitation, they have become competitive athletes again, playing against able-bodied teams in competitive, celebrity, and exhibition games across the country.

In addition to functioning as an outlet for veterans and active duty soldiers to compete athletically, the WWAST uses these cross-country games to raise funds for the WWAST Kids Camp, medical research, and rehabilitation equipment.  Now in its sixth year, the WWAST Kids Camp seeks to empower young boys and girls with amputations. The camps are led by WWAST players who work as coaches and mentors, helping teach not just softball skills, but more importantly life skills as well.

“The Long Island community is proud to be hosting the Wounded Warrior Amputee Softball Team for the fifth time,” said Event Organizer, Joe Bartumioli. “We anticipate a great event along with a patriotic atmosphere to cheer our heroes on.  This team of true heroes certainly inspire the fans wherever they play.  We are proud to help them raise awareness and funds for their signature event, the WWAST Kids Camp.”
