2014 Interview

What positions do you play and what is your best position?
I play outfield, specializing in Centerfield

Who is the best softball player you have ever seen play?
Too many to list. All around athlete probably Wegman. DC41 is pretty tough to play D against, the guys hits it wherever he wants. And Purcell is the best pitcher I've faced, although I'm sure everyone says that.

Who is the best up and coming player in softball and why?
Lots to choose from. Isaac Gonzales and Josh Carter for sure. John Wheeler, Nick Price. Our whole Classic Glass roster is young studs. Some people not on the radar yet: Johnny "bodybag" Perchak and Brandon "Shimi" Shimada.

What is your height and weight?
6'3   190

Where do you call home?
Concord, California

What's your favorite way to spend an off weekend?
Relaxing.. I take my time off and do nothing. Maybe a bp session and some Call of Duty.

What do you do for a living?
I'm the sales manager for a 24 Hour Fitness gym.

Did you play sports in High School / College / Pro?
High school was football, basketball & baseball. College was baseball at Bellevue university in Omaha, NE.

How did you get your start in softball and how did you get to the upper level?
I've been around the game since I was a kid, my Pops played for years and after baseball I started playing leagues with him. I played about 3 years of lower level tourneys from E-C. until my buddy PJ Garcia helped me get a shot with Famous last year.

What was the most surprising difference between Conference play and non-Conference play when you made the jump?
Besides the overall speed of the game, I would say the fact that there never is really an "easy out".

What would you say is your career highlight to this point? Maybe one play or game that sticks out to you in particular?
Probably winning Toys for Tots 2012 just based on the competition involved. Personally I would say getting All tourney in the Seattle double and SoCal majors.

In your career was there a single person (player/manager/coach) who had the most significant impact on your approach to the game? Why?
I would just say my Pops. He taught me all I know. Aaron Ingram is also one of the best player/coaches ever, great guy and good teacher of the game.

What advice can you give a young player trying to break into the upper level?
Bp, Bp, Bp… You may be the best in your league night but that doesn't mean much more than a T-shirt. In other words, get better.

What type of batting grip do you use and what ounce bat?
Pinkie off the knob, 27oz

What do you do in the offseason to prepare for the next softball season?
Play more league nights and fun tourneys. Bp and lifting are year round anyways.

What is your favorite sports team and your favorite sport other than softball?
Oakland A's and Baseball of course. Football is a close second though.

Do you have any superstitions and if so, what are they?
Too many to list. Any real ball player has a countless amount.

What would be your "at bat" music selection?
Hells bells by ACDC

What is the best improvement upper level softball could make?
In regards to the home run title: Every level of conference should have the same number of hr's to hit. If a guy like Isaac Gonzales is on a B team that only gets 8 bombs a game, he's never gonna catch a major player who gets 12-16 a game on his team. Just a thought.

What is your favorite non-World tournament and why?
Florida Dual. The fields are awesome and everyone can swing away. Plus there's not much more fun than catching a guys 390ft shot to center for an out. That tends to piss people off, which is my favorite thing to do.

What is the best softball field/complex you have played at and why?
Disney overall. Every field is in amazing shape. Going 10-2 there one year after losing game 1 didn't hurt. BiPS 2011

Where is the best place to eat on the road after a game?
Wing house or Hooters. They tend to have the nicest staff members

What is the funniest thing you have ever seen on a softball field?
At 3am after a game in the dual, Oscar Shipley takes out a 15ft whip and cracks it like Indiana Jones, scaring the hell out of everyone. Sounded like a firework went off 5ft away.

Tyler has to be the one of the best outfielders in the conference and he does it with fierce competitiveness and humility of a true champion. Congrats Tyler on making a name for yourself and representing your Norcal Boys and for making it easier to pitch when you know if it’s not out the park it’s caught … Youbetcha ump
