New Team —> Bay Area Legends Tre’ Campbell

Tre' Campbell

2014 Interview

What positions do you play and what is your best position?
OF, 1B, C, EH

Who is the best softball player you have ever seen play?
This is a tough one. While playing All Army. I played with a fella called Albert Kemp. The guy was about 40 yrs old. But could run the outfield like a deer and hit with power and precision. On the Conference side. I would have to say Andy Purcell. I think that he is under rated as a hitter and honestly I think he is the best hitter on the conference. Also my boy Dustin Roberts. I knew Dustin when he had curly hair and ran the outfield.

Why do you like the game of softball?
I love the game of softball. Because of the camaraderie and fellowship. Softball is an outlet to me. Everything that I have going on in every day life stops when I'm in the box. Its just me and the pitcher.

Who is the best up and coming player in softball and why?
I have a few up and coming players. I really like the way Rashard Brown from Primetime/Easton plays the game. Very humble ballplayer with tons of potential. There is also a ballplayer up in the VA area by the name of Mike Mallory. Probably can hit with anyone on the conference level.

What is your nickname in softball and how did you get it?
1000, I got the name after playing my first year on the BSC. Teammates started calling me that because no one could get me out. I had a great year.

What is your height and weight?
5'11" 235 lbs

Where do you call home?
I am currently in the US Army stationed at Ft. Lee, VA by the way of Columbus, GA

What's your favorite way to spend an off weekend?
Spending time with the family, watching movies, and clowning around.

What do you do for a living?
I am a member of the US Army (17 years)

Did you play sports in High School / College / Pro?
I played High School football, wrestling, baseball, and track

How did you get your start in softball and how did you get to the upper level?
I played baseball all through high school. Joined the military out of high school. Played intramural sports in the military and started from there. Been playing every since.

What was the most surprising difference between Conference play and non-Conference play when you made the jump?
Conference play is very different. the most surprising difference is the pitching. Also the defense.

Is there a player that you would compare your game to?
I would say Chivas Clark. We both are lefties. And have a love and desire for the game.

What would you say is your career highlight to this point? Maybe one play or game that sticks out to you in particular?
I would say that the best career highlight is while playing with the Armed Forces team in 2005. We gave a stacked Benfield team a run for their money. No one expected us to compete in that tournament and we ended up finishing 2nd in the nation.

In your career was there a single person (player/manager/coach) who had the most significant impact on your approach to the game? Why?
The person that had the most significant impact in my career is the late Mike Turney. Mike was the coach of my Gold Medal All Marine team in 2000. Mike saw in me what no one else did. He gave me a shot. and I am truly thankful for him.

What advice can you give a young player trying to break into the upper level?
Keep working. The key to playing upper ball is your attitude and your willingness to get better.

What type of batting grip do you use and what ounce bat?
Regular bottom with the top hand 3 bottom fingers overlapped.

What do you do in the offseason to prepare for the next softball season?
Gym, tee work, and gym.

What is your favorite sports team and your favorite sport other than softball?
Favorites sports teams are Cubs, 49ers, and Auburn. Sport I like other than softball is Football

Do you have any superstitions and if so, what are they?
Yes. I always keep change in my pocket. I always wear one wristband on my glove hand.

What would be your "at bat" music selection?
No Worries Lil Wayne

What is the best improvement upper level softball could make?
More tournaments

What is your favorite non-World tournament and why?
I used to like the McNair Tournament in Tennessee. One of the best tournaments ever.

What is the best softball field/complex you have played at and why?
BLD Vegas. Great complex and most importantly its in Vegas.

Tell us something about you that most would never know about you?
Most people would not know that I am on the Elite Players List on the BSC.

What was your favorite sports related gift you have ever given or received?
The greatest gift that I have ever given is every time I win an award. I give it to my kid or any kid that is in the stands.

Where is the best place to eat on the road after a game?
Buffalo Wild Wings.

What is the funniest thing you have ever seen on a softball field?
The funniest thing I have ever seen was playing in New Orleans and it rained all night. The home plate and 1st base side was swamped. It was so bad that the umpire was calling the game bare footed.. Funniest thing ever.
