2015 Interview

What positions do you play and what is your best position?
1st,3rd,C/EH

Who is the best softball player you have ever seen play?
Tough one here, lets go with 3. Bryson, Wegman, Purcell

Why do you like the game of softball?
Obviously the competition but also the friends I have made through the game.

Who is the best up and coming player in softball and why?
Wes Newell- the pitcher from B&B Drywall last year, kid is a gamer.
Adam Ussery- young kid from Arkansas i played college ball with, many probably on the conference level dont't know him but he will be playing with Bear Hollow on the Conference this year and his glove and bat will turn some heads.

What is your nickname in softball and how did you get it?
This list goes on and on… lets go with with Stu or Stuy… Pretty solid guess it came from shortening my first name

What is your height and weight?
6'4''  270 pounds

Where do you call home?
Southlake, Texas now but from Arkansas

What's your favorite way to spend an off weekend?
Really don't see too many of these… I do enjoy my time in the woods hunting after the season is over every year.

What do you do for a living?
I work for a gun accessory and optics manufacturer.

Did you play sports in High School / College / Pro?
Baseball and Football in High School. 2 years of baseball in College.

How did you get your start in softball and how did you get to the upper level?
My cousin, John Hughes, got me to start playing some week night league and small tournaments with his E team at the time, Arkansas Mayhem, after I decided I was done with baseball. I played with them for roughly 3 years moving up to D sometime in there. Then we were playing in the Hope Watermelon Festival and Lyf Nimmo and Tim Barnes from ASPNation saw me and asked me if I wanted to play the conference with them in 2012. I had no idea what the conference was, but i did know i had a job in Dallas when i graduated that December and ASP was from around Dallas and they had just run ruled us at the Watermelon Festival, so i played with Miken Mafia/ASPNation in 2012 as a conference C team. Then this past year after our ASP team split up I went over to B&B Drywall, Bobby O'Neal's team to finish the year.

What was the most surprising difference between Conference play and non-Conference play when you made the jump?
The speed and mental approach to the game

What would you say is your career highlight to this point? Maybe one play or game that sticks out to you in particular?
Not sure. It was fun hitting at the Texas Rangers game this year with the Longhaul Bombers. Especially when you tie one of them when you get 7 pitches and they get 15… oops

In your career was there a single person (player/manager/coach) who had the most significant impact on your approach to the game? Why?
There are 3 guys that I will always owe a lot for what they have taught me about not only the game and how to play it but also for being like brothers. These guys would be John Hughes, Chris Potts, and Lyf Nimmo. All three of these guys have helped me tremendously get to where I am today in the game of softball.

What advice can you give a young player trying to break into the upper level?
Hard work always pays off. Always hustle and respect the game, SPONSORS, umpires. NO ONE likes a Jack*ss.

What type of batting grip do you use and what ounce bat?
Drop one pinky off bottom, top handle is normal

What do you do in the offseason to prepare for the next softball season?
Try to workout as often as I can with some BP mixed in. Then closer to the season I will make sure i find few times week and run

What is your favorite sports team and your favorite sport other than softball?
Boston Red Sox. favorite other sport would definitely be baseball but football is close.

Do you have any superstitions and if so, what are they?
Always velcro my left batting glove first.

What is the best improvement upper level softball could make?
I have only been around for a few years so I am not too sure on this. But like anything else no matter what is said or happens, people always try to "beat the system" and eventually will..

What is your favorite non-World tournament and why?
Smoky and the Hope Watermelon Festival

What is the best softball field/complex you have played at and why?
Softball World in Euless, where the Texas Legends Major is played and the fields in Sherwood Arkansas, where the Busch Classic is played. These may not be the "best" field I have played on but they are always in great condition, clean, and best of all the fields seem to play big.

Where is the best place to eat on the road after a game?
I am definitely not a picky eater, so wherever

What is the funniest thing you have ever seen on a softball field?
Way too many…

Tell us something about you that most would never know about you?
Went to college on a full Academic scholarship
