2011 Interview

Why do you like the game of softball?
I love softball for a bunch of reasons…The comraderie you develop with your teammates makes spending all that time away from your family somewhat worthwhile.   I love the competition, knowing that every weekend, we're playing against some of the best players in the country.  Maybe the biggest reason is the fact that I've gotten to meet a lot of people and have made what I consider lifelong friendships because of softball.

Who is the best softball player you have ever seen play?
Impossible for me to narrow this down to one, I've been lucky to play with or against most the players active now.   So here is a list of players I think are the best at their respective positions since I've been playing…P Purcell  3b Joerling  ss DeDonatis  mi B. Baker 2b  Connell  1b Bumgardner Lf Rainwater Cf R. Baker  Rf  Wegman  C  Helmer  AH Wallace

Where do you call home?
I live with my wife Vicki and two kids Cameron and Jonah in Clinton Township, Michigan

What do you do for a living?
I'm in armed security

Did you play sports in High School / College / Pro?
Played basketball and baseball through high school.    Played baseball at Oakland University.

How did you get your start in softball and how did you get to the upper level?
I was playing rec ball with friends from high school and after playing a pretty good game, someone came to me and asked if I would want to play in a more competitive league.   I showed up to play shortstop for them on a league night and played pretty well.   They asked me to finish the year and I did…that was with a class B team called Wartrom in 1999.   I've been playing either class A or Major since 2001.   I was lucky being in the right place at the right time…

What batting grip do you use?
Standard but I drop my pinky finger off the bat.

What is your favorite sports team?
Detroit Tigers and….not sure I should admit this or not….but, the Detroit Lions.

What is your favorite sport other than softball?
Love to watch baseball and football, but I LOVE to play golf.

Do you have any superstitions and if so, what are they?
My room has to be so cold that you could safely consume meat that was hung up over night.   Not sure if that's a superstition or just a weird way to sleep…

What is your most memorable softball moment?
I've had a few good ones…but I would say winning 3 USSSA class 'A' World Series by way of double dip.   I've yet to win one of those things from the winner's bracket.

Is slowpitch softball a sport or a game?
I think of golf and bowling as games…I say softball is a sport…stand in front of a ground ball hit by either Connell or Helmer and try to tell me it's just a game!

What is your favorite non-World tournament?
Most people will probably say the Smoky and the Dudley…I love those tournaments too, but I will also say that Joliet has been real good the last couple years in terms of the competition it has attracted.   The same can be said for Detroit, even though I'm a bit biased, you can usually find a bunch of the top teams there trying to improve in the standings.
