Ryon Rabon

USSSA Playing History Player Page

What positions do you play and what is your best position?
Anywhere in the OF, played all 3 positions last year. I know some guys have difficulty judging the ball when they are used to playing on a particular side but I am comfortable at all 3

Who is the best softball player you have ever seen play?
Wegman is the most versatile player I have seen, guy does it all

Why do you like the game of softball?
Softball gives me a chance to keep competing at a high level. I'm an extremely competitive person that just wants to win

Who is the best up and coming player in softball and why?
I will have to say my teammate last year, Jesse Campanelli (SS for Above All), this kid can flat out pick it with an absolute cannon for an arm. May seem a little biased but he hustles more than anyone I saw play last year. Triples machine!

What is your nickname in softball and how did you get it?
"Hoops", my height got me this one as guys figured I could play basketball.

"Ray Ray", one of those guys that goes by their last name a lot so the simple thing to say was Ray Ray, even though its spelled with no y its pronounced with Ray-bon.

"Double", my initials and I was a double double kinda guy on the hardwood.

What is your height and weight?
6'3" 215 lbs

Where do you call home?
Hughesville, MD

What's your favorite way to spend an off weekend?
With my family, my wife and two kids mean the world to me. Playing catch with my son who is 6 and teaching him about the game every chance I get

What do you do for a living?
I work as an analyst in the federal government

Did you play sports in High School / College / Pro?
Played basketball and baseball in both high school and college

How did you get your start in softball and how did you get to the upper level?
Took me a while to put the wooden bat down and quit playing baseball but once I did I just enjoyed a weekend hanging out all weekend with good friends and playing softball. Joe Benanti gave me an opportunity to play with Above All, kinda being the unknown new guy

What was the most surprising difference between Conference play and non-Conference play when you made the jump?
Hands down the pitching, those guys really control the game–some work at a fast pace and others slow the game down but all are able to pitch to the defense

Is there a player that you would compare your game to?
Probably not at this time.

What would you say is your career highlight to this point? Maybe one play or game that sticks out to you in particular?
Defensive MVP at the conference championship last year. Playing against Miken/Xtreme last year at Fortune Road complex…robbed a homerun in right field which would have been a 3-run shot and we came in to push the lead and eventually go on to win the Conference championship

In your career was there a single person (player/manager/coach) who had the most significant impact on your approach to the game? Why?
I learn a little from everyone I'm around, take what I can from those willing to teach and use it to develop myself.

What advice can you give a young player trying to break into the upper level?
I am a young player trying to break in the upper level, so I should be asking this question…

What type of batting grip do you use and what ounce bat?
Pinky off the knob and overlap my top hand pinky.

What do you do in the offseason to prepare for the next softball season?
BP, BP, BP…working on all parts of the game.

What is your favorite sports team and your favorite sport other than softball?
I'm a big supporter of my local teams…. Redskins, Nationals, Capitals, and Wizards!

Do you have any superstitions and if so, what are they?
Not big into superstitions, personal choice I guess.

What would be your "at bat" music selection?
Rich Homie Quan – Walk thru

What is the best improvement upper level softball could make?
I would suggest some type of conference all star games where players from Major, A, B, and C teams to compete against each other with different guys than they play with all year.

What is your favorite non-World tournament and why?
I really enjoyed the Smoky's last year, the atmosphere is pretty insane with all the locals that come out.

What is the best softball field/complex you have played at and why?
Disney complex, professionally taken care of

Where is the best place to eat on the road after a game?
I'm a steakhouse kinda guy…in between I'll settle for Chick Fil-a

What is the funniest thing you have ever seen on a softball field?
My buddy Willie Allen kicking a softball from second base to first base…something you have to witness in person! Will shock the hell out of everyone and piss the other team off for sure

What was your favorite sports related gift you have ever given or received?
My grandfather gave me an autographed Cal Ripken Sr and Cal Ripker Jr picture that I'll never let go of
