Maryland Major

Glen Burnie, MD

June 12-15

Resmondo Specialty Tank/Worth knocked off #1 Laservision/H Auto/JJ's/Easton in the winner's bracket championship late on Saturday night 33-32 and again in the championship game on Sunday afternoon 42-32 at the Maryland Major.  The Major was supposed to be a dual tournament weekend but the first tournament which was scheduled to start Thursday and finish Friday ended up getting completely rained out.  The teams had to spend a lot of downtime waiting out the rain but finally got started on Saturday morning and it was decided to count the finishing positions of the teams in the 2nd event for both the 1st and 2nd tournament.  So Resmondo who had 5 tournaments and 1204 points coming into Maryland scores 282 and 282.  They drop a low score from Euless of 204.  So the math comes out to 1204-204=1000.  Then 1000+282+282=1564.   Laservision came in second and had 1493 points in 6 tournaments coming in.  So they drop their Seattle tournament points 201 and 201 and the math comes out to 1493-201-201=1091.  Then 1091+242-242=1575.  So Laservision holds an 11 point lead, if my math is correct, in the Nationwide Conference USSSA point standings.

Team Albicocco/The Scene/Easton/Elite finished 3rd after making an amazing run through the loser's bracket.  They beat Burch/Propate by 3, Reds Astros by 5, 4 The Fallen by 1, Baugh Ford by 2, Slattery by 5, and Line Drive by 1, before losing to Laservision in the loser's bracket Championship.  Line Drive Sportz/R&M Metals/Easton who also played very well finished 4th.  Both Alibicocco and Line Drive collect some big double points!

I will add final standings, awards, quotes from team representatives, and pictures as I get them.  I myself (DW) was scheduled to be in Maryland Friday for the first event but stayed home when I watched the forecast of rain and went to my twin daughters fastpitch tournament on Saturday and Sunday.

Looking at the bracket there was an incredible amount of close games and very few run rules.  Looks like some great competition.

The Nationwide Conference USSSA moves on to the Dudley next week where 6 games will be broadcast on ESPN3.com

Send me any pictures you have of Maryland and I would be glad to post them.  dw@softballcenter.com   Thanks!

I asked the teams the following post Maryland tournament question:

How did your team look in Maryland this weekend?  (Touch on the offense, defense, and mention where your team is headed next).  Also let us know about injuries, roster additions/deletions, and what your team did during the two day rain delay?

Here are the responses so far:

Broughton-Shaun Bridger/ Player: "We did not play well this weekend.  Our offense didn't show up. Defensively we played good. We have added some new players that we believe have made us a contender for the B world. We have added Jesse Harrison, Matt Tindall, Kevin Johnson, Sterling Parker and Scotty Langford. All whom play an important roll in our success. No excuses. Just have to start winning the close games."

Above All/GWS – Brian "Doc" Kildea Manager: "Overall I'm pleased with our effort in Maryland. We sent several very good teams home after being put in the loser's bracket in another close game with Baugh. The offense has responded to the reality of needing more runs against Conference quality teams. Our defense is something we're always very proud of, in fact it improved with the addition of Anthony Sorrentino from MPT. Next up is Conference Affiliate in Nokesville, VA. Our down time was spent having a wiffle ball tourney in the parking lot of our hotel."

P&P 333-Tracey Flack: "I thought our team played hard all day. Beat The Scene in the first game then played Taylormade and got beat by one. Team is playing hard and starting to put weekends together. Will be in Indianapolis next. Some of the guys went to DC and some went to Downtown Baltimore on friday.  We have some lingering injuries but we should be ok."

Crossfit – Willie Medlin  Coach: "We drew Shoppe our first game enough said"

CashHouse ATM – Rob Whitehouse- sponsor, manager & player: "We played well in two games and horribly in one, but everyone came out healthy and looking forward to Indianapolis.    The biggest disappointment of the tournament was the use of the other complexes that were said to be "45 minutes away"….more like an hour twenty with all the construction.  That is just something that's not expected out of a conference USA tournament."

ChecKing/Worth – Jim Consiglio – sponsor: "Need pitching. Have enough power and defense is adaquate for our level. Going to VA Aff next.  Pitching help coming end of month – Norm Abair. No injuries. WORTH support with Mike Cornell is awesome."

Team Combat/Softball.com – Don Cooper – GM: "Great job by the tournament staff to find a way to get one leg of the event in so the points could be earned.
As far as our teams play it was pathetic….. piss poor … really bad … add any other comments you feel. What we should have done during the rain delay is kill ourselves."

Team Albicocco/The Scene/Easton/Elite – Shannon Smith – "After the first game, which looked terrible, we kept finding a way to win. Some of the wins still weren’t that pretty but we kept finding ways to get it done. It was a team effort as well. Everyone played. Guys rotated positions and made all the routine plays. Watching chente up the middle is fun he does some amazing things. Hitting picked up as the day went on. Pinch hitting was great as well. Guys came in off the bench with the game on the line.  I’m sure everyone walked away a little bit injured. I don’t know how our guys run the outfield that many games. We’re going to take a month off so everyone can get healthy, we’ll be back at the smoky."

"For the rain delay: there was some intense ping pong matches in the game room. I saw Branch and steven Lloyd maxing out on bench. Scott Kirby showed up and casually repped their max."

Orlando, Chitty and Lee had some bro time in the hot tub. I was dragged to the Coach outlet by my girl. Others just laid in bed and enjoyed the free time. Friday night most of us played a “friendly” game of poker.

Thanks to all the people that sent in a response and I will add anymore that I receive.
