Who are you playing with in 2014?
No team right now:  beisbol2202@yahoo.com

Why do you like the game of softball?
It helps keep me competitive and gives me a reason to try to stay in shape. Plus I have met some great people and developed some true friendships.

Who is the best softball player you have ever seen play?
There are always the usual answers like Helmer, Wegman, Jr., Connell, Purcell, Bryson…which they are the best players around right now.

I like watching some of the younger guys that are gonna be around for alot more years though. Guys like Bazat, Reyna, Mike Umshied, Brandon Dillon, Jeremy Yates, Orlando Castillo, Steven Lloyd, Lee Payne, Dale Brungardt, Steve Whaley, Andrew Collins, Cory Large, Kyle Pearson, Travis Dale, Ryan Parfitt, Travis Clark, Nick Santana, man there are so many more so I am sorry for the ones I have not mentioned.

I have been lucky to play with some great players from around the St. Louis area also.

What is your nickname in softball?
Luke, along with others that usually relate to the straw

Where do you call home?
Festus, MO, it's a small town south of St. Louis

What do you do for a living?
High School PE teacher along with coaching baseball

Did you play sports in High School / College / Pro?
Played baseball, football and basketball in High School. Played college baseball at a JUCO and then Oklahoma State and then signed with the Kansas City Royals. Also played four years in the Independent Frontier League for two teams around St. Louis.

How did you get your start in softball and how did you get to the upper level?
I started playing at the C level with some good buddies just having fun when I was done playing baseball. I then played at the B level for a few years with some of my buddies from around St. Louis and then I got the chance to play at the upper level when Rope Club called wanting to pick up Dan Bean, Kevin Bazat, and myself from our local B team called Tapout. I am sure they really just wanted those two but they took me also.

What position do you play?
I like shortstop and middle the most but can play any of the infield spots, I even do some pitching when needed.

Why do you play with a straw in your mouth?
I guess it all came about when I first started playing with my buddies, it helped take care of some of my bad habits while I was on the field. It really started to bother alot of teams so I just kept on doing it, you know how young punks always want to do things to make people mad. Well that is pretty much why I kept doing it. I then got to where I would eat McDonald's before most tournaments so it then became a McDonald's straw. Now it has to always be a McDonald's straw, nothing else. I just grab handfuls of them each time I go there, that way I have some stocked up.

What batting grip do you use?
Overlap

What ounce bat do you use?
27 oz

What do you do in the offseason to prepare for the next softball season?
I try to lift as much as I can, plus get some cardio in whenever I can. Start hitting as the season gets closer.

I recently started doing some crossfit and it has helped me drop about 15lbs.

What is your favorite sports team?
St. Louis Cardinals and Oklahoma State Cowboys

What is your favorite sport other than softball?
My true favorite sport is hunting, I spend alot of time before Christmas sitting in a duck blind with my dad, brother, and good friends. Nothing better than a good duck season in southeast Missouri. College baseball would be my other.

Do you have any superstitions and if so, what are they?
I played baseball so of course I do. The first one is the whole straw thing. I usually try to do the same things if things are going good, I get a little crazy with it, just ask Bean. It got to where he hated Bazat and I because we had to do the same thing everytime.

What is your most memorable softball moment?
Winning an NSA B World with Tapout in 2008 was cool because it was a group of my good buddies that helped me learn the game. The top by far though is Winning the USSSA A World in 2012 with R&M. That was such an awesome weekend with a great group of guys. We just never gave up and kept finding ways to win games. I owe alot to my good friend Rob Humphrey for picking me up part way through that season. If it wasn't for him I wouldn't of had the opportunity to win the A World. Thanks buddy. Also, thanks to Roger (R&M sponsor) and Kenny Lowell for everything they did that year too.

Is slowpitch softball a sport or a game?
I would say it is a sport at the upper level since you do all the preparation to play it.

What is the best improvement upper level softball could make?
I like it the way it is.

What is your favorite non-World tournament?
I would say Woodson Terrace in St. Louis. Open fields so you just swing away plus alot of drinking usually gets done by most teams on this weekend, plus the hotel we usually stay at is just a short walk from the park.

I also really enjoy playing in Snoball Tournies. I have put together or helped put together some very good teams for the ones around St. Louis.

What is the funniest thing you have ever seen on a softball field?
I would have to say seeing my boy Bazat strike out 3 times in one game, it was a Snoball Tourney so it was less than favorable conditions plus we had been drinking most of the day. Lets just say Bazat isn't very good when he tries to drink and play softball. Haha

Also, I would have to say after playing with Mike Umshied for a year that every weekend something funny happens. Mike puts on a pretty good show but the one after we won the A World might of been the best.

I have no idea why an upper team doesn’t have this guy on their roster. He’s a proven quality infielder and great teammate. Any team would be fortunate enough to have this guy on their team and in their lineup. As long as you have time to stop for straws at McDonald’s, he’s one of the most dependable guys out there and gets the job done!!

One of the best teammates I have ever had. It is a surprise to me that he is not on a roster and that he doesn’t hit .900 every year. One of the smoothest swings in softball. Our A World team should have never been broke up buddy. Miss ya!
