2012 Interview

Why do you like the game of softball?
    — As with most, I really enjoy the competitive nature and more strategic approach to the game.  At this level, there is so much more to the game than just drinking beer and trying to hit HR’s like some stereotype; With that, I do also value the friendships you develop with guys while playing and traveling across the country.

Where do you call home?
    — Terre Haute, IN

What do you do for a living?
    — Account Manger/Coordinator for a Health Management Company out of Minneapolis.  Advantage: working from home, being able to travel and work from anywhere, anytime; Disadvantage: working a crazy amount of hours

Did you play sports in High School / College / Pro?
    — High school: Baseball and Wrestling
    — College: Baseball at Lincoln Trail Community College and Arkansas State Univ.

How did you get your start in softball and how did you get to the upper level?
    — Started at 16 with dad and a family friend (Jeff Stevens) in local leagues and smaller competitive tourneys for the Fire Dept team
    — First Utrip experience was with Jim Allensworth on Quad City from Arkansas right out of college (absolutely loved it)
    — Since then been, playing NSA/ASA in Indiana  mostly – got a call from Red’s-Astros/TPS last year, had a good short run with that great bunch, then came the Sinister opportunity this year

What position do you play?
    — Most would say utility as I've played every position on the field (with the exception of P and 1st) in the last 2 years.  Coming up I played 3rd and OF in college, then mainly short in softball but realized quickly being utility was the quickest way up the ladder.  Ive spent some time in the OF and hovering around all IF positions over the last couple of years, but at heart, I'd still have to claim shortstop as home.

What batting grip do you use?
    — Knobcuff, with one of a kind tape job, and a standard baseball style grip (fingertips)

What is your favorite sports team?
    — Indianapolis Colts and Notre Dame

What is your favorite sport other than softball?
    — Spectating = football
    — Playing = golf

Do you have any superstitions and if so, what are they?
    — No superstitions per say,  but I do enter the box the same way every time

What is your most memorable softball moment?
    — I would have to say winning the NSA Open World.  I went as the 12th guy for Red’s Astros/TPS just trying to get my foot in the door at the upper level, the 2nd baseman got sick during the tournament, so the infield slid over and I got to play short for the rest of the tourney.  It was an amazing/surreal experience and I am very grateful for the opportunity as I believe that was my first step to climbing the softball ladder.  Absolute great bunch of guys!!!  Other than that, I would say winning the 1st Annual National NSA All-Star game last year.  There were a limited amount of teams, but it was still a heck of time and a memorable experience with the guys.

Is slowpitch softball a sport or a game?
    — Definitely a sport at the upper level

What is the best improvement upper level softball could make?
    — My time in the conference has been short, but I'd say closing the gap in Major and A (even B) rated teams.  Everyone has the “chance” to win, but realistically, playing for 3rd every tourney will eventually drive a lot of players/sponsors away I think.

What is your favorite non-World tournament?
    — Smokey Mtn Classic

What is the funniest thing you have ever seen on a softball field?
    — Played with a 2nd basemen a few years back that tried to squeeze out a fart while in the field and ended up with more than he bargained for.  HAHA. Best part was, we ended up using a pinch hitter and re-entry – guy just went commando in his uni before taking the field next half inning lol.
