2015 Interview

What positions do you play and what is your best position?
Pitcher and 1st. I believe my best position is pitching.

Who is the best softball player you have ever seen play?
Andy Purcell

Why do you like the game of softball?
My Dad played and I look up to him. He is my hero and I wanted to be just like him, so I began playing softball.

What is your nickname in softball and how did you get it?
"Matrix" Just the way I move on the mound reminds people of the moves in the matrix movie.

What is your height and weight?
5'10"   220

Where do you call home?
Greenville Tx.

What's your favorite way to spend an off weekend?
With my family and watching my kids play sports.

What do you do for a living?
I work at L-3 Communications of Greenville Tx. as a parts handler.

Did you play sports in High School / College / Pro?
Yes, I played baseball in high school..

How did you get your start in softball and how did you get to the upper level?
I was playing city league and one of my friends ask me to go play a tournament. It started from there, moving up and playing higher quality of ball.

What was the most surprising difference between Conference play and non-Conference play when you made the jump?
Haven't had the opportunity to play conference ball, but have played several conference tournaments.  The biggest difference for me was the pitching and how the umpires expected just "straight strikes" especially after working on many different techniques of different pitches.

Is there a player that you would compare your game to?
I don't necessarily believe there is another player similar to me playing the game.

What would you say is your career highlight to this point? Maybe one play or game that sticks out to you in particular?
When I played Hispanic World and broke my pinky and finished the tournament and won the Hispanic World MVP. It proved fighting through the pain was worth it.

In your career was there a single person (player/manager/coach) who had the most significant impact on your approach to the game? Why?
My father has had the most significant impact on my game.  I have always looked up to him and taken his advice to heart.  He has always pushed me to do my best and be a strong athlete.

What advice can you give a young player trying to break into the upper level?
Don't ever give up, just keep practicing, and push harder to get better.

What type of batting grip do you use and what ounce bat?
Stock batting grip most of the time and I swing a 26 or 27 end loaded bat.

What do you do in the offseason to prepare for the next softball season?
Eat right, hit the gym, and also hit BP at least 3 times a week.

What is your favorite sports team and your favorite sport other than softball?
Texas Rangers/ Baseball

Do you have any superstitions and if so, what are they?
Don't step on the chalk stepping onto the field, have the same approach toeach at bat..

What would be your "at bat" music selection?
The song Happy by Pharrell because it is the song my daughter has as her "at bat" song in her special olympics.

What is your favorite non-World tournament and why?
I like playing and participating in benefit tournaments, especially those that are for good causes.  For example, 1 month ago I played and volunteered in the James Finn Benefit tournament.  James, was a 10 year old boy of one of the people I currently work with, he had a heat stroke and ended up passing away.  I am not always financially able to provide to others, but I can give to these causes by putting a team together to play in the tournament, and by giving my free time to umpire and help out where I can.

What is the best softball field/complex you have played at and why?
Definitely Disney's ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex Major's field.  It just gives the impression of what the "majors" should be.

Where is the best place to eat on the road after a game?
I am not picky, I like food!

Tell us something about you that most would never know about you?
I have multiple tattoes that are related to my brother Brian who passed away from Colon Cancer in 2001.

What was your favorite sports related gift you have ever given or received?
I received a jersey from Jeff Hall during a Bass bats demo, he literally gave me the shirt off his back.
