2012 Interview

Why do you like the game of softball?
I have always loved sports and competing.  So after I decided not to continue to play baseball anymore softball was a way for me to still play ball and compete, be able to travel the country and see different places, hang out with the guys and have a little fun. It’s nothing like having a mini vacation to get away from the daily routine of being home and being able to play ball at the same time.

Who is the best softball player you have ever seen play?
I haven’t been around the game of softball that long or seen enough to say who I would say is the best softball player I have ever seen.  Everyone has a general idea of who the top players in the game are already.

What is your nickname in softball?
Everyone calls me B-Lo

Where do you call home?
Richmond, VA

What do you do for a living?
Pitching Instructor

Did you play sports in High School / College / Pro?
I played football and baseball in high school.  Was drafted in the 11th round by the Cleveland Indians as a pitcher out of high school but decided to attend Louisburg College in Louisburg, NC.   I went to Louisburg, pitched and played centerfield for 2 years and signed with the Milwaukee Brewers after my second year.  I played minor league ball with the Milwaukee Brewers and the Chicago White Sox.  And I also played independent ball in the Frontier League with the Southern Illinois Miners and the River City Rascals.

How did you get your start in softball and how did you get to the upper level?
I grew up with Cory Boothe, one night his league ball team was short some players and he asked me if I wanted to come out and play outfield for his team.  That was the first time I ever played softball, I want to say that was back in 2008.  Later that year Cory asked me to play in a local tournament with our Taylormade sponsor Travis Taylor.  That’s when I met Brian Floyd, Chris Calcutt, Chyenne Brooks, and Stacy Bolton.  After that tournament, Brian Floyd told me whenever I was done with baseball and wanted to play softball I had a spot on his team.  My first upper level tournament was the USSSA Men’s Majors World Series in 2009 with Taylormade.  In 2010 I was still trying to play minor league ball but after that did not work out I joined Taylormade/Mizuno at the Dudley and finished the year with them.  2011 was my first complete year of upper level ball…..I have to thank Cory Boothe, Brian Floyd, and Travis Taylor in giving me the opportunity to play softball at this level.

What position do you play?
Centerfield

What batting grip do you use?
Regular baseball grip

What ounce bat do you use?
26

What do you do in the offseason to prepare for the next softball season?
I play flag football year round with my team Shoulda Went Pro who is sponsored by TM Sports.  That helps me stay in shape and keeps my speed and quickness right.  I cut and split a lot of wood, and this year I created a speed/agility workout along with a strength workout that I’m going to try to stick too.  I hit live BP and do soft toss whenever possible.  And when I’m taking live BP I like to shag fly balls by myself and try and catch every fly ball that’s hit and get them in one pile together before the hitter is done.  It’s a great conditioning workout I challenge everyone to do it.

What is your favorite sports team?
I only have one favorite sports team and that’s the Miami Dolphins.

What is your favorite sport other than softball?
Football

Do you have any superstitions and if so, what are they?
I like to put my sliding shorts on before I put my pants on.

What is your most memorable softball moment?
This year 2011, being the 16th seed at the majors and losing the first game against Resmondo and fighting all the way back to finish 2nd.  It was the most fun I have ever had at a softball tournament and for Resmondo to be the only team that could beat us made losing a little bit better.  Also, making the All World Team in my first full year of softball.

Is slow pitch softball a sport or a game?
Sport – An athletic activity requiring skill or physical prowess and often of a competitive nature
Game – A competitive activity involving skill, chance, or endurance on the part of two or more persons who play according to a set of rules, usually for their own amusement or for that of spectators.
Umm….Yea I would say it’s both.

What is the best improvement upper level softball could make?
I would say limit the number of major players to 5 a team and find a way to get more sponsors involved in the game.  That way each team would be competitive and there would be a lot more teams in USSSA than it is now.

What is your favorite non-World tournament?
Any tournament that we win

What is the funniest thing you have ever seen on a softball field?
I haven’t really seen anything hilarious yet.
