2019 Free Agent – Brian.atchison10@gmail.com

What positions do you play and what is your best position?
I’m a pitcher but am also very proficient at 1st base and can run in the outfield

Who is the best softball player you have ever seen play?
Dale Brungardt is easily my favorite player. Other than that Steven Lloyd and Brad Carlsen are a couple guys I can be sure to watch when I get the chance

Why do you like the game of softball?
The friendships that are made from it.

Who is the best up and coming player in softball and why?
There’s a ton of young talent coming out of the PNW. Too many to mention

What is your nickname in softball and how did you get it?
Most people just call me Atch.

What is your height and weight?
5’11” 205lbs

Where do you call home?
Olympia, WA. About an hour south of Seattle.

What's your favorite way to spend an off weekend?
Usually by playing backyard tourneys or umpiring.

Did you play sports in High School / College / Pro?
Played baseball all through high school. Started playing softball by dumb luck right after

How did you get your start in softball and how did you get to the upper level?
Moved up the ranks starting at the rec level with some work friends and played C for a few years with a team called Upperdeck. Then played with Newbreed the first year they came on the scene and had arm problems that moved me to pitching from the outfield. Been playing at the B level for the last 3 years

What was the most surprising difference between Conference play and non-Conference play when you made the jump?
Really the mental part of the game was way different. Players just seem to have a better understanding of situations and have way stronger intangibles.

Is there a player that you would compare your game to?
As I grew my game I tried to watch Spike Baker play and tried really hard to emulate how he played.

In your career was there a single person (player/manager/coach) who had the most significant impact on your approach to the game? Why?
A couple. My coaches through the years. Eli Keller years ago with UD, Ryan Lekness and Jose Sanchez for giving me my first chance at the conference, and currently Jason Ford who coaches me on Goodfellas for constantly challenge me to make myself better. There’s tons more but those are the ones that stick in my mind.

What advice can you give a young player trying to break into the upper level?
Never stop trying to learn. Ask questions, observe players you look up to, and stay humble.

Drop a finger on each hand. Swing a 27oz

What do you do in the offseason to prepare for the next softball season?
What’s an off-season?

What is your favorite sports team and your favorite sport other than softball?
Mariners baseball. I love being disappointed every year!

Do you have any superstitions and if so, what are they?
I have normal routines. A few oddball things I do.

What is your favorite non-World tournament and why?
King’s of the Northwest and Toys 4 Tots

What is the best softball field/complex you have played at and why?
The RAC in Lacey, WA. The turf is quality and the amenities in the park are great

My aunt got me an autographed baseball from Ozzie Smith which I still cherish.
