Tournament Preview!

2020 USSSA Major World Series Bracket Link

The 2020 USSSA Men's Major World Series begins Wednesday, October 7th at 9:00 AM.  The 4 "play in" games are back in the Red Quad and and the rest of the games scheduled for the stadium.  The tournament will be played at the Space Coast Stadium in Viera, Florida with its 325-365-385-365-325 field dimensions and the Dudley Stadium ZN ball.  The tournament features 20 of the top teams in the nation, 18 of which were the top 18 teams in the Nationwide Conference USSSA point standings, plus Maroadi/SNI/Easton who is the #19 seed and Baugh Ford/HDLNS/Hubs Pub who is the #20 seed after they qualified by being the highest finishing non-qualified teams at the USSSA Conference Championships last week.  The 4 "play in" games and all of the first round games are played on Wednesday and then Thursday the winner's bracket continues with the final 8, and then the final 4 plus the first 4 loser's bracket games.  On Friday the loser's bracket plays all day and the winner's bracket finals are on Friday night.  On Saturday the final 8 teams remaining will battle it out to crown the new champion.  If you cannot be there then tune in for all the action on USSSALive.com!

The wind in the stadium traditionally blows out to right field and this year there should be cooler than normal World Series temperatures.  The past 3 Major World Series champions have not been the #1 seed and the past 4 champions also have been 4 different teams.  Dan Smith with their outfield range and late inning pitching has the advantage in this one.  Plus the #1 seed they clearly earned during the season will payoff as they will be the home team in every game.

The USSSA Major is an unlimited home run event, there is no floating rubber, they start with a 1-1 count and no foul ball after the 1st strike.

Team stats and rosters are at the bottom of this article.

GAMES START AT 9 AM Eastern time on Wednesday, October 7th

Also here at SoftballCenter.com we will have the chat room open to discuss the games.

Shea Nations picks!

This week the 50th Major World Series has 20 Nationwide Conference USSSA teams in attendance with all 4 major teams, 5 AA and 11 A teams.  The Conference USSSA points leader and #1 overall seed Dan Smith/Menosse/Steven Smith/FAI is the favorite to win. The other teams looking to upset the favorite are: Resmondo/Smash IT/Sonny's/JJ's/RDD/; Pure Sports/ Infamous/ EB and BadDraw/TDB/RapidFire/T2/BAF/Pauer.

Major World Series predictions:  I predict the top 8 seeds to win in the first game and advance to the Elite 8.  So, the Elite 8 should be Precision versus Bad Draw, Resmondo versus Pure, Anarchy versus Bay Area and Dan Smith versus Xtreme.  The Final Four undefeated will be 3 of 4 major teams and Shea Nation's pick for the AA World champion.  Setting the stage for the game we have been waiting all season, Resmondo versus Dan Smith in the undefeated game.  Can the pitching of Andy Purcell limit the power hitters of Resmondo on the big field?  In the loser's bracket, the Elite 8 teams will win their next game matching Pure versus Precision and Xtreme versus Anarchy for 7th place.  With Xtreme and Pure moving on to face the losers of the Final Four for 5th place.  Bad Draw should beat Xtreme and Pure to make it back to Resmondo to play for 3rd place.  Resmondo beats Bad Draw again setting the rematch with Dan Smith for the Major World Series Championship.

Shea's Final Picks for the Major World Series:
1.  Dan Smith/Menosse/Steven Smith/FAI

The 2020 Major World Series Teams!

#1 CA-Major – Dan Smith/Menosse/Steve Smith/FAI – Dan Smith is 21-5 vs the Major division and won 8 tournaments this season.  They have the pitching, defense, hitting, and power to win the Major from the winner's bracket or the loser's bracket.  If the wind were to blow in they have a pretty good small ball game and team speed as well.  If Dan Smith has a weakness it is their 4 losses to 'A' teams and the fact that they don't have any lefty's in the starting lineup.

#2 FL-Major – Resmondo/Smash It/Sonny's/JJ's/RDD – Resmondo is 11-13 vs Major teams this season and managed just one tournament win (Columbus, Ohio Dual #1).  On paper they have an explosive offense but when needed late in games have not been able to put together big innings.  Their outfield defense hurt them in the 2019 Major World Series and hasn't improved this year.  They will play without Steele Lewis (Coaches decision).  Somehow they need to reach down deep and really focus defensively and get some adrenaline going offensively late in games to have a shot.  They need to think about defense the way Kevin Bazat plays defense – want every ball hit to them knowing they will get the out.

#3 NC-Major – BadDraw/TDB/RapidFire/T2/BAF/Pauer – Bad Draw was 8-12 vs Major teams this season and they won 2 regular season tournaments (Lexington and Virginia).  They have a couple of left handed power hitters in Everett Williams, Buddy Wolf, and Tyler Wilson that should help them try and upset the top 2 favorites and Jason Martel made a late push for the batting title.  Last time a tournament was played at Space Coast Stadium it was Bad Draw who was the undefeated team going into the championship game where they were double dipped by SIS/Thunder.  Since then they picked up leadoff hitter Tyler Wilson and SS Ryan Stovall who both finished the year strong.  Statistically they have 8 players with over a .700 on base percentage.

#4 CA-AA – Bay Area Legends/Easton – Bay Area Legends were 3-7 vs the Major division and won 2 tournaments (Phoenix and Utah Dual #1).  They aren't necessarily built for the stadium fields but their #4 seed puts them in a great spot to be the favorite to meet Dan Smith in the semi finals.  They added outfielder Brad Lunda for some power early in the season and picked up Chente Granados mid season to shore up the defense.  Joe Dorton has scoreboard clearing power.

#5 NJ-AA Anarchy/MPT Rentals – MPT was a very respectable 5-12 vs Major teams.  They had impressive runner up finishes in Cincinnati and the Smoky where they won the winner's bracket.  Midseason they added John Williams at 3rd base and Brian McBryde at middle infield and released Brett McCollum and Jeff Keske who went to Precision.  In a weird way it actually made both teams better.  They don't have many left handed power hitters and will have to win games with base hitting and extra base hitting.

#6 IL-AA Smash It/Precision/3rd Street/Bulldawg – After a slow start to 2020 Smash It/Precision ended up 8-8 vs Major teams, finished 2nd at Virginia Dual #1, and won the Conference Championship to end the regular season.  The team has really come together and should make a run to a Saturday finish.  Heath Barnes at shortstop probably has the most range of any infielder in the conference.  Keske and McCollum have returned "home".  Umscheid has been steady at leadoff.  Lefty's Davis Bilardello, Dave Kessler, and BJ Fulk have all sort of had a 2nd wind to their softball careers this year, and rookies Tyler Kahlke and Mark Blaziewske have contributed impressively at times.  They also have Dan Bean (if healthy?) who won the Major with Dan Smith last year at pitcher.

#7 SC-Major – Pure Sports – Pure Sports was 3-14 vs Major teams and came up short about 10 times in close games.  Can they put it together for one weekend?  The problem is they needed that 4 seed.  Instead with the 7 seed they have to go through too many Major teams.  Their last game against Resmondo in the stadium though, they did win back in June.

#8 OH-A WestPoint – WestPoint was 1-8 vs Major teams but made some nice runs at the Hall of Fame Classic and Columbus Majors on big fields.  There is no reason that cannot continue.

#9 MN-AA Xtreme/Miken/Worth/Athlon/ASP – Xtreme did not have an Xtreme like year.  They finished 2nd at both Utah Duals which got them to 9th in the points.  They were 0-6 vs Major teams.  They have some power but can they remember how to play the big boys?

#10 OH-A Premier/T&W/Easton/BAF – Premier was 2-8 vs Major teams and won the Atlanta Conference Event in August.  They don't have the power to compete on baseball fields consistently but could pull off an upset.

#11 KY-A Sports Reach/Crunchtime/H&H/Grizzy – Sports Reach is 3-10 vs Major teams and had the upset of the year beating Resmondo at the Smoky Mountain Classic.  They finished 2nd in South Carolina and Atlanta, and 3rd at the Smoky.  Robert Blackburn and Brandon Jonas are the big names but Kenneth Cooper, Justin Mackey, Chris Scott, Zach Watts, Robbie Fow and a few veterans quietly put together nice seasons.

#12 NC-A WorkSteer/Bell's LawnCare – WorkSteer is 2-5 vs the Major division this year and had 5 top 5 finishes during the season.  SS Dezern, rookie Emilson Marquez, pitcher Brian Renner, veteran Pat Price, and 1st baseman Jess Maloney lead the teams offense which can battle anyone for 7 innings.

#13 CA-A Classic Glass/Easton – Classic Glass returns to the Major after winning the Lonestar tournament in Dallas, Texas.  They have one of the leagues leading hitters in center fielder Donald Hollingsworth and some power in Tim Martinez, Mike Brambilla, and Travis Tucker.  A good tournament would be 2-2.

#14 FL-AA Riot/Klutch/Treedem/Pure – Riot is 2-8 vs Major teams but they only had one top 4 finish on the year.  Their roster got better during the season with pickups of Andrew Vitcak at pitcher, Steve Edwards, Nick Mitschke, and Adam Kaminski but they haven't put together a real good run all year.  Now is as good a time as any!

#15 GA-A Prime Time Easton/F.A.I./Riot/Klutch – Prime Time was 3-5 vs Major teams with most if not all of that damage coming against Pure Sports.  They picked up Zach Messer to play shortstop, and Ira Brown and pitcher Rod Armour have had monster seasons.  A fun team to follow when they get it going.

#16 CA-A Cheap Suits/Republic Realty/EA – Cheap Suits is 0-1 vs Major teams this year and their best finish was a 2nd to Classic Glass in the Lonestar Shootout.  If their entire team is there it is a veteran group with some upset potential but as happens with a lot of non major teams at the world series I hear they may be missing a few players.

#17 NC-A TurnKey/CCP/Dan Smith/Worshams – TurnKey was 2-9 vs Major teams but played them tough for the most part.  They had a 4th place finish at Virginia Dual #1 as their best tournament.  The are led by veteran pitcher Shawn Jones and I hear they may be missing a few key players for the major.

#18 OH-A Category5/Nager/Atrium/M&S/Grizzy – Category5 started out as SVC then had a parting of ways mid season with sponsors and managers.  They are an impressive 3-6 vs Major teams this season.  They didn't fully participate in the conference this year and did not turn in stats?

#19 FL-A Maroadi/SNI/Easton – Maroadi played their way into the Major by being the highest non qualified team at the Conference Championships.  They are 0-6 vs Major teams this season but seem to have a different attitude since picking up Fyffe and Olsen  from Thunder.  We are still waiting for this team to peak.

#20 AL-A Baugh Ford/HDLNS/Hubs Pub – Baugh Ford backed their way into the Major after a turbulent year where they merged with Hubs Pub mid season.  They have struggled and have nothing to lose and are 1-4 vs the Major division.
