Tournament Preview

2020 Columbus Major bracket and team list link

Basically the top 26 teams in the nation descend upon Columbus, Ohio's Lou Berliner Park this coming Thursday for the start of a Dual tournament 4 day weekend!  The tournament will begin on Thursday morning at 8 AM on 8 of the fields which all have turf infields.  The weather looks great and the bracket is loaded!  There will be 150 + (26 x 4)  = 254 points awarded to the winner of each dual and the points battle for the Conference Championship and the top 17 should become much clearer after this event.  Fields 14-17 are high school baseball sized fields and the other fields used are about 305 all the way around.  They will use the Dudley Pro-M ball 44-375.

The 2nd dual will start on Friday as the 1st dual ends.  Both duals are seeded by Conference points and looking at the 1st dual bracket an interesting Anarchy/MPT vs Bay Area Legends matchup could occur at 11:30 AM over on field #4 and 3 of the 5 Major teams (#2 Resmondo, #3 Bad Draw, and #6 Pure Sports) are in the top half of the bracket leaving #1 Dan Smith and #5 SIS/Thunder on the bottom half of the bracket.  In the bottom half also there is a section of the bracket where Sports Reach, Westpoint, or Baugh Ford (all 'A' teams) will make it to the round of 8 undefeated and there is an area of the bracket where Chick-fil-a, Levels, Primetime, or Seminoles will make it to the Final 8.  Those are big games for those 'A/B' teams when it comes to scoring points.

Columbus Major video clip playlist over the years

The chat room will also be up and running all weekend. will attempt to live stream all 9 fields starting at 8:00 AM eastern time on Thursday morning.

Here is the team breakdown:
 28 Total Teams
26 Are Nationwide Conference USSSA Teams
5 Major teams
6 'AA' teams
13 'A' teams
 4 'B' teams

Note: the 2nd dual has 32 teams and they add 2 'B' and 2 'C' teams to the field

Shea Nations Picks

This weekend the Columbus major has 24 Nationwide Conference USSSA teams in attendance with all 5 major, 6 AA, 13 A, and 4 B teams.  The Conference USSSA point leader and #1 overall seed Dan Smith/Menosse/Steven Smith/FAI is the favorite to win. The other teams looking to upset the favorite are: Resmondo/Smash IT/Sonny's/JJ's/RDD/; BadDraw/TDB/RapidFire/T2/BAF/Pauer; Smash It/Thunder/Backman/Albicocco and Pure Sports/ Infamous/ EB.

Columbus Predictions:  With the shortened season due to the Coronavirus brings some firsts for the Conference season.  One of those being the Columbus B.A.T.S. Major by Smash It Sports being turned into a dual event.  We should see some high scores in the cool Ohio air.  So, I predict the final four to be Bad Draw versus Resmondo and Smash It Thunder versus Dan Smith.  The winner of each game will have to score 50+ runs to advance to the undefeated game which should be Smash It versus Resmondo.  In the loser's bracket, Precision after losing to Resmondo in the second round can fall into the bottom part of the loser's bracket where they do not have to face a Major team until the 5th place game allowing them to make a run and gain valuable conference points.

Shea's Final Picks for the Columbus Major Dual:
1. Smash It/Thunder/Backman/Albicocco
2. Dan Smith/Menosse/Steven Smith/FAI
3. Resmondo/Smash IT/Sonny's/JJ's/RDD/
4. BadDraw/TDB/RapidFire/T2/BAF/Pauer
5. Smash It/Precision/3rd St/Bulldawg

Somehow some of last years team names got into the poll choices so my apologies to Resmondo and Smashit/Thunder for that.

The oldscout pollers went with Dan Smith 52% and I am surprised Thunder at just 4%?
