2018 USSSA Major World Series Bracket Link

The 2018 USSSA Men's Major World Series begins Wednesday, September 19th at 8:00 AM with a "play in game" between #15 Nightmare/Miken and the Military Champion Gov't Issue.  The tournament will be played at the Space Coast Stadium in Viera, Florida with its 325-365-385-365-325 field dimensions and the Dudley Stadium ZN.  The tournament features 18 of the top teams in the nation, 16 of which were the top 16 teams in the Nationwide Conference USSSA point standings, plus La Famiglia/Easton/Elite Sports who is the #17 seed after they qualified by being the highest non-qualified Conference 'A' team at the USSSA 'A' Worlds two weeks ago, and Gov't Issue who qualified by winning the USSSA Military Worlds.  The two "play in" games and all of the first round games are played on Wednesday and then Thursday the winner's bracket continues with the final 8, the home run derby, and then the final 4 plus the first 2 loser's bracket games.  On Friday the loser's bracket begins and the winner's bracket finals are on Friday night.  On Saturday the final 8 teams remaining will battle it out to crown the new champion.  If you cannot be there then tune in for all the action on!

We are looking for guest commentators for USSSALive all week.

Resmondo is the #1 seed and they are the heavy favorite to win the Major having won a league high 6 tournaments including both Hall of Fame Classic tournaments, the Smoky, and the Conference Championships all of which were played on the bigger fields.  #2 seeded Dan Smith has also won 4 tournaments including the Columbus Major which was played on baseball fields.  And #3 Smash It Sports has won 3 tournaments but none were on baseball fields.  #9 Riot Sports who won Chattanooga in May, #6 Precision in Indiana, and #12 Baugh Ford are the only non-Major classed teams to have won a tournament where at least one other Major team was in the event this season.

The USSSA Major is an unlimited home run event.  The Home Run Derby is set for Thursday night at 6:30 PM with the top 16 HR hitters and then each team also gets an at large selection.  HOME RUN DERBY info link!

Shea Nations picks!

This week the Major World Series has the Top 16 Nationwide Conference USSSA teams in attendance along with La Famiglia who won the berth as the #17 seed and Gov't Issue who won the #18 seed as the Military Champion.   All 3 major teams, 9 AA, and 6 A, will play with unlimited homeruns for the first time at the Space Coast Complex in Viera, FL.  The Conference USSSA point leader and #1 overall seed Resmondo/RDD/ IN/Sprizzi/Eastn is the favorite to win.  The other teams looking to upset the favorite are: preseason favorite Smash It/Thunder/Backman/TDB/Miken and Dan Smith/Menosse/Steven Smith who will try to overcome its roster turmoil and get the win.

Major World Series Predictions:  Like the NCAA tournament we could see the 12 seed pull off a couple upsets and make it to the Final Four making the matchups SIS versus Dan Smith and Resmondo versus 12 seed All Out.  I predict the Cinderella season to come to an end with Resmondo beating All Out then Smash It to beat Dan Smith.  The undefeated game should be a rematch of the Conference Championship between Resmondo and Smash It.  In the loser's bracket game 13 we could see a potential matchup between the A World Champion Rapid Fire Athletics and "Shea Nation's" AA World Champion pick Precision.  I predict all the higher classified teams to win in the loser's bracket making the 5th place games to be Precision versus Dan Smith and TDB versus All Out.  If all holds true like predicted then TDB and Dan Smith would play for 4th place.

Shea's Final Picks for the Major World Series:
1. Resmondo/RDD/ IN/Sprizzi/
2. Smash It/Thunder/Backman/TDB/Miken

The 2018 Major World Series Teams!

Team Rosters Link

#1 FL-Major – Resmondo/RDD/H.Auto/All In/Sprizzi/Easton – Resmondo is the favorite.  They have the most power and are led by their MVP pitcher Travis Clark, manager Brett Helmer, and veteran outfielder Brian Wegman.  The lineup is stacked with consistent Major World Series top performers like Greg Connell, Bubba Mack and Bryson Baker, and a group of left handed power hitters like Jeremy Yates, Neil Haglund, and Buddy Wolf.  In center field they have Steele Lewis who has a non stop motor.  Anchoring the defense will be middle infielders Kevin Bazat, Brett Rettenmeier, and Mike Umschied.  They also have super utility man Brad Reckart, backup pitcher Lloyd Watson, and part time pinch hitter Scott Kirby who just happens to have been the all time leader in Disney HRF (Home Run Frequency).  Resmondo will attempt to power their way to a World title.  They are the only team in softball this year with a winning record against other Major teams (14-5).

#2 CA-Major – Dan Smith/Menosse/Steven Smith – Dan Smith had a new team and a bit of a roller coaster type season this year.  They tied for the win at the 2nd Hall of Fame Dual, won 3 tournaments total, and won the Columbus Major to end the regular season.  But then with a mathematical shot at the #1 seed for the Major they finished an unexplainable 5th at the Conference Championships.  To top it off last years Major World Series MVP Andrew Collins status for this years major seems to be in question.  We don't really ever know which Dan Smith team will show up on a given weekend but we know the one that wins can pull off the upset and win this years Series.  The Dan Smith group is a youthful bunch with Stovall, Dunn, and Collins or Bilardello in the outfield.  Bilardello was the Conference Offensive MVP and his left handed power will be needed with the winds that usually blow across the Space Coast Stadium from left to right.  The infield has Brungardt at 3rd, newcomer Jo Jo Bennett at shortstop, Jordan Spaulding up the middle, Steven Lloyd at 2nd base, and either Bilardello or Kanaby at 1st.  Mike Nino and Losson White do the pitching and they picked up Kevin Kennington who will probably do some pinch hitting.  The team was 7-12 vs Major teams and 16-5 vs AA teams during the year.

#3 NY-Major – Smash It/Thunder/Backman/TDB/Miken – This team won 3 tournaments, was 9-13 vs Major teams and 15-3 vs AA teams.  Those numbers are significantly down from what they did in 2017 when they won the Major.  They have Washington, Santana, and Dillon in the outfield.  They have John Williams, Don Dedonatis, Luis Reyna, Cory Briggs, and Kyle Pearson in the infield.  And Andy Purcell and Andrew Vitcak on the mound with Ryan Harvey and Josh Riley at C/EH.  Their power lies with some of the best stadium power hitters in the game in Pearson, Harvey, Washington, and Riley but they do not have the stadium power throughout the lineup like Resmondo does.  They will have to set the table and hit the homers with runners on to be successful.  But they do have the difference maker on the mound with Andy Purcell who has rarely missed a Major championship game in his last 15 years.

#4 SC-AA – Pure Sports/Monsta – 2-2 vs Major teams this year.  Pure Sports should make it to Sunday and they are in that part of the bracket where there are no major teams so this is a huge opportunity for them.  They have one of the best defensive infields in softball with Granados, Messer, McClanahan, and Barnes.  They have depth at pitching with Mucciarelli and McClanahan.  And they have elite hitters like Carlsen, Branch, and Hammonds, to go with hitters having a great year like Zach Messer and Jared Hunt.  They round out the team with the power of Justin Mackey and veteran stars like Lee Payne and some role players like William Scott, Pat Price, Brian Dezern, and Heath Barnes.

#5 NC-AA – TDB/FAI/Klutch/Miken – 1-9 vs Major teams this year.  TDB has struggled everywhere this season except when they play at Space Coast Complex where they are 13-6.  They also are in that spot in the bracket where there are no Major teams so their goal is to hold serve the first couple rounds and then challenge Pure Sports to go to the final 4 undefeated.  Kyle Pearson 2B, AJ Montano MI, and Tyler Wilson 3B have led TDB in hitting.  Some of the power is provided by Martel, Matusik, and Fulk.  And they have veterans like shortstop Orlando Castillo and center fielder Brian Zirle among others.  The pitching has been by committee this year with Faron Miller, Tom Bloom, and manager Brian Titus sharing the mound.

#6 IL-AA – Precision/3rd Street/Bull Dawg – 4-5 vs Major teams this year.  Precision is looking to play spoiler and try to upset a Major team at some point in this event.  They can do it.  They are a veteran team that has all had USSSA success at some point in their careers.  The pitching is shared between Dan Bean and Roger Drake.  The defense is led by middle infielder Jeff Keske, 2B Jeff Flood, and 2nd year shortstop Kyle Kannenberg.  The offense is led by David Kessler (.779) and the power by Jason Magnum, Travis Houseman, Brett McCollum, and Brad Tabler..

#7 IN-AA – Rack's/Worth Astros/Klutch/Troupe – 1-4 vs Major teams this year.  Racks should get an early shot at Dan Smith at noon on Thursday.  They have a veteran pitcher Bill Pinkham back on the mound and the defense feeds off of his play up the middle.  The offense is deep with veteran hitters like Steve Edwards and Dan Kirkwood mixed in with power hitters like Chad Mullins and Jon Nelson.  This team will go as far as their infielders hit I think.

#8 WA-AA – Newbreed/Steel Sports/DeMarini – 0-6 vs Major teams this year.  The Newbreed vs Riot 1st round winner gets a shot at Resmondo.  Newbreed won the Oklahoma Major and collected a nice record against fellow AA teams.  Victor Cordova is the team leader.  The Steel Sports contingent of Everett Williams, Dustin Roberts, and shortstop Steven Malay have had big years.  And center fielder Donald Hollingsworth was All Conference.  They also added outfielder Jon Gastineau, 1B Steven Lopez, and veteran Eli Aguilar to the team during the season.  Pitching may be the queston mark?

#9 FL-AA – Riot Sports/Broughton/Beckham/Worth – 2-4 vs Major teams this year.  Riot Sports started the year hot at the Hall of Fame Classic and then they won the Chattanooga Major after beating Smash It Sports.  But the second half of the season has been slowed by tournaments where they did not have their entire team present.  Dan "Dirty" Sanchez is the pitcher.  They had a rookie of the year candidate Taylor Nichols in right field.  And veteran hitters like Mike Ortiz leading off and infielder Scott Langford to go with catcher Keith Martin.  Not enough stadium power here to pull off more than one Major upset.  How is that for bulletin board material?

#10 GA-A – Baugh Ford/Pure Sports/Kincaid – 0-4 vs Major teams this year.  Baugh Ford has some injuries and missing players for the Major.  Their goal should be 2 wins.

#11 MN-AA – Xtreme/Miken/ASP/Athlon – 1-3 vs Major teams this year.  Xtreme won the prestigious Dudley and of course are the reigning USSSA 'AA' champions.  They will only have enough horses to play spoiler in this one.  The offense is led by Curtis Stewart who they picked up during the season, big Shannon Smith, and left handed outfielders Colin Baartman and Pat Ellwanger.  They have depth at pitching with Dirk Updike, Danny Evans, and Austin Green.

#12 TX-AA – All Out/A&A/Steel Sports/ASP/Miken – 0-4 vs Major teams.  All Out had two 2nd place finishes and three 3rd place finishes in the smaller Conference events this year.  They are led by All Conference performers Jason Ferguson, CF Matt Schrage, and veteran pitcher Jeff Graus.  They are missing players for the Major so they are not expected to do much.

#13 OH-A – Premier/Easton/HDLNS – 2-4 vs Major teams this year.  Premier actually has a winning record (2-1) vs Smash It Sports this season.  They won the GSL 'A' and finished 4th at the USSSA 'A'.  They won't lay down for the AA teams and have a shot at winning a couple games.  Their defense revolves around pitcher Patrick Center and middle infielder Rocky Staton.  The offense is led by veteran Cory Boothe and the teams hitting leader Patrick Foster who can get hot.

#14 VA-A – Rapid Fire Athletics/Bad Draw – 1-4 vs Major teams this year.  Rapid Fire had that memorable upset of Resmondo in Chicago back in June.  They also return to the scene of their 2018 USSSA 'A' World title.  The team has some stadium power with Rich Racobaldo, Jess Maloney, and David Forbes but can't get caught up in trying to out homer anyone.  They also have a veteran pitcher in Cam Byars and a defensive star in 2nd baseman Freddie Bynum.  Their poor performance in Columbus cost them a few spots in the standings and now a first round matchup with Smash It Sports at the Major.

#15 MO-AA – Nightmare/Miken – 0-4 vs Major teams this year.  Nightmare has not had any success this year after finishing 8th in Conference points in 2017.  They have had huge years from middle infielder Tommy Melton and catcher Mike Brown.  Go hard or go home.  🙂

#16 OH-A – Pauer Sports/JBL/Tailgaters/B&E – 1-5 vs Major teams this year.  Pauer Sports finished 2nd at 'A' Worlds and had that memorable win over Resmondo in Columbus over a month ago.  The team has a play in game and will have to play one inning at a time to scratch out any wins.

#17 PA-A – La Famiglia/Easton/Elite Sports – 0-3 vs Major teams this year.  Almost the entire La Famiglia team will experience their first Major World Series ever.  So it should be an interesting experience for them.
