The 2016 Nationwide Conference USSSA regular season came to a hard hitting end this past weekend in Sterling Hts, Michigan as it traditionally does.  And one team is peaking while many others struggle some to find consistency.  And that team is the Scene/Albicocco/Worth/Miken/Monsta sponsored by Tony Albicocco and managed and built by Jason Kendrick.  This team has come on strong in the second half of the season and through early failures, learned to win as a team and finally broke through and won an event where all of their fellow Major teams were present.  The tournament started on Friday night with two rounds of games played before the annual home run derby.  The talk around the tournament was about which teams on the "bubble" to get into the top 16 in Nationwide Conference USSSA points would qualify for the USSSA Major World Series!  Those teams on the bubble were #12 JBL/Tailgaters/B&E/Worth out of Ohio with 1,000 points, #13 Xtreme/Miken out of Minnesota-AA with 998 points, #14 TM Sports/Mizuno out of Virginia-AA with 970 points, #15 Line Drive Sportz/Easton out of Michigan-AA with 958 points, #17 Vivid/Worth/Klutch out of Texas-AA with 958 points, #18 Nightmare/Miken out of Missouri-A with 948 points, #19 AllOut/PowerhouseSportz/IzzySports out of Texas-A with 946 points, and #21 Bay Area Legends out of California-A with 924 points.  Each team vying for those last 4 spots in the Major field.  There were 30 teams total in the tournament with the first round games playing Friday night and Saturday morning.  In those games the bubble teams Vivid pulled out a big 27-24 win over Bay Area Legends, JBL/Tailgaters knocked off ASP/Venom (WI-B) 26-24, Line Drive won 30-23 over All In (PA-B), Xtreme won a slugfest with the local Rebel Sports (MI-B) team 44-37, TM Sports was upset by Team Adiktiv (FL-B) 34-14, and AllOut playing without their star pitcher Larry Juarez (sickness) won over Nightmare 37-22.  All of the rest of the favorites that were already mathematically in the Major World Series won easily except for 3rd Street Financial (OH-AA) who was upset Saturday morning 30-29 by TG Brand (MI-B).

By the second round of the winner's bracket all 5 of the non-conference teams were in the loser's bracket and it was 16 conference teams and most of the top teams in the nation battling it out for the "Last Chance" title.  In that second round all 8 of the higher seeds won including all 5 Major classed teams and 6 of the 8 games were won by the run rule while Smash It Sports (NY-M) struggled to a 35-27 win over Team Adiktiv and Team Combat (WA-M) finally put away Xtreme/Miken 37-32.

In the round of 8 things got real interesting with some of the longest games of the season playing out.  #2 seeded Resmondo Specialty Tank Worth (FL-M) came from behind to beat Newbreed (WA-AA) 39-38 after having a 28 run lead and a 14 run first inning.  Great comeback there by Newbreed, showed a lot of heart.  The Scene (NY-M) battled TG/Red's Astros (IN/OH-AA) for over 2 hours and came from an 18-0 deficit to beat them 37-34.  Scene knows how to play the game, save homers, and they never get rattled.  Smash It Sports jumped out to a 25 run lead on Team Combat and won 39-8.  And #1 seeded Backman/Louisville Slugger (IN-M) had a back and forth game where they had a 27-19 lead going into the bottom of the 7th on Precision (IL-AA) but Precision still had 4 homer's left to hit.  In that final inning Backman 2nd baseman Steven Lloyd made an incredible but controversial full out diving catch on a line drive with nobody out and runners on 2nd and 3rd and had the presence of mind to jump to his feet and double off the unsuspecting runner on 3rd for a huge double play.  If this hit goes through #1 Backman would have lost but they instead held off Precision 27-24 to advance to the final 4 along with the other top 4 teams in the nation.

The final 4 of the winner's bracket started on Saturday evening with Smash It and Backman and was a fairly uneventful game with Backman seemingly in control and they cruised to a 38-21 run rule win.  In the other semifinal Scene scored 11 runs in the bottom of the 1st and battled Resmondo the whole way scoring 6 runs in the bottom of the 6th and never did have to bat in the 7th in a 37-31 Scene victory.  In the winner's bracket finals Backman took a 1 run lead into the bottom of the 7th where Scene with no homer's left out of their 16 allotted HR's started at the bottom of their order with singles by Cory Newman (6-6 in the game) and Bill Pinkham and then MVP Jason Branch at the top of the order singled to make him 7-7 in the game and two hitter Erik Kanaby walked off Resmondo with a game winning double for his 9th and 10th RBI of the game!

Meanwhile in the loser's bracket some teams were punching their ticket to the Major World Series and others were having their hearts broken.  Rebel Sports played spoiler against AllOut who needed at least one more win and the 10 more points that come with it to get into the top 16 but Rebel won 44-29 leaving AllOut with just 970 points but enough to get them into 16th at least until the other teams played.  Xtreme ended Nightmares hopes 39-29 then lost to TG/Red's ending up with 1008 points good for 12th in the point standings.  Vivid who was 17th coming into the Michigan Major beat BHR, Precision, and Combat soundly in the loser's bracket then had Resmondo on the ropes only to lose on a bottom of the 7th Howie Krause walk off homer after Vivid had been up 31-25 going into the last half inning.  But at least Vivid truly did prove they earned their berth and wound up 13th in the final point standings with 1002 points.  JBL/Tailgaters held onto the 14th spot and played Line Drive in the loser's bracket to a 26-23 loss giving Line Drive the 10 points they needed to grab the 16th and final spot in the Major knocking out AllOut.  And TM Sports after that dismal 20 run loss to Team Adiktiv won 4 straight in the loser's bracket over Sandbaggers, TG Brand, Rebel Sports, and a shocking 39-36 victory over Newbreed to punch their ticket to the 15th spot in the standings!

But the last games of the night were those loser's bracket games to get to Sunday where Smash It Sports knocked off TG/Reds and Resmondo scored those 9 runs to beat Vivid and those two teams met at 8 AM on Sunday morning.  Resmondo took a big early lead (22-0) on Smash It Sports but Smash It never gave up with a 13 run 2nd on 4 homers but Remsondo would have 2 more double figure innings in a game that lasted over 2 hours and Resmondo won 56-46.  Greg Connell had 4 homers and 9 RBI in the game.  Then Resmondo held down Backman leading at one point 27-9 on a 16 run 5th inning but Backman came back to make it respectable on some great defense by Kennington (triple play attempt), Lloyd (diver), and Schulte (diver) and cut the lead to 33-25 but lost 36-25 and Resmondo advanced to the Championship.

In that final game Scene and Resmondo put up huge numbers early with Scene up 26-17 after 2 innings.  In the 3rd Scene scored 4 but Resmondo scored 11 runs on homers by Isenhower, Connell, and Fulk to cut it to 30-28.  In the top of the 4th Resmondo changed the momentum of the game with defensive stabs by Purcell at pitcher and Mack at third base and then a Purcell got the last batter to strike out looking.  But Resmondo put up a zero in the bottom of the 4th also and Scenes Erik Kanaby hit a 3 run homer in a 7 run top of the 5th.  Resmondo would tie the game at 37-37 in the bottom of the 5th with both teams having 4 of their 16 homers remaining.  In the bottom of the 6th Resmondo took at 41-37 lead on two run homers by Luis Reyna and Howie Krause.  But the Scene wasn't going to let their hard work go to waste and Branch and Laski hit homers to give Scene the lead.  Then Costantino added a big 2 run homer and the Scene led 49-40.  In the bottom of the 7th in true Resmondo "never say die" form they got a 2 run homer from Reyna and a 2 run homer from Isenhower but a big diving stop by Scene first baseman Chris Costantino helped preserve a 49-47 win and the tournament championship for Scene!

The tournament was played in near perfect Michigan weather.  There was a huge crew of Conference umpires on hand for the field dedication in the late Duane Posavetz's name, and the classic M ball was used on 300 foot fields.  The field conditions with the deep holes in the batter's box and the hard infields were less than favorable and the teams that hunkered down and fielded the hot shots were successful.  Resmondos Greg Connell wrapped up the Triple Crown for the second year in a row but was chased for the batting title by a valiant effort by Scenes Jason Branch and the Scene of course is THE story of the second half of the year with their emergence into the upper tier of the Major division.

Long Bombers of the Week

Andrew Collins (middle) from Resmondo won the Friday night HR Derby, 2nd was Adam Rockoff from Newbreed, and 3rd was Corey Gilbert of Bay Area Legends!

The derby was a little boring for awhile although it heated up at the end with some hitoffs and some clutch homers.

Costantino, Dodds, Smitherman, and some others some locals I can't remember were also in it towards the end.

Remsondos Lee Payne hit some long homers during the tournament

Final 2016 Regular Season Nationwide Conference USSSA Points Standings

Final 2016 Regular Season Computer Rankings

DW's pick for tournament MVP is Scene manager Jason Kendrick who put this team together, tweaked on it, believed in it, and molded it into one of the best teams and stories of 2016!

Greg Connell wrapped up another Triple Crown winning season as he led the Conference in onbase percentage, Home Runs, and RBI.

Steven Lloyd of Backman is my Defensive pick for tournament MVP as he made a couple unbelievable diving stops including one against Precision where he doubled off a runner on 3rd base in a key situation.

Team by team notes brought to you by:

1st Place Scene/Albicocco/Worth/Miken/Monsta

Conf 'M' from NY  6-0 Record

Scene is the story of the tournament as they won hard fought victories over the top teams in the game…again.  They have good speed, good defense, great pitching from the workhorse Bill Pinkham (by the way in his first conference season), and they conserve homers, "play the game" right, and pick each other up.  And boy do they score runs at almost 40 a game in Michigan.  This team has gotten better every weekend of the year with small tweaks to the roster, their attitude, and their confidence.  Kudos to management and each player as they put together a perfect weekend.  Now the learning curve on how to win on the stadium fields will have to be done a little quicker but they simply have to realize they should play their game and don't get caught up in trying to hit homer's with their peers.  It can be done but it sure as hell won't be easy, nothing worth doing is.

Tomorrow I want to do a breakout of the Computer Rankings since the Seattle Major in early June and see what they look like.  I am curious if Scene would be #1 in the computer rankings and points since then.  It would be interesting.  Scene has won 8 of their last 10 against Major teams and 13 of their last 14 against AA teams and are 31-4 since Seattle…wow

2nd Place Resmondo Specialty Tank Worth

Conf 'M' from FL  5-2 Record

Resmondo was a little off on sharpness but not a whole lot to play for as they would have been 2nd in points regardless of the outcome.  They did show good stamina and clutch hitting against Newbreed and Vivid late in those games and then to beat Smash It and Backman back to back Sunday morning it looked like they might win the Last Chance again but it was Scenes weekend after all.  Purcell looked good after coming back from that back injury in Cincinnati.  He was hitting the ball HARD and pitched every game as backup pitcher Dan Sanchez had a pulled hamstring.  3rd Baseman Jimmy Salas is still out with a broken hand and Bubba Mack played over there and they shuffled the 4 outfielders around and Howie Krause got a lot of playing time at 1st base and DH.

3rd Place Backman Louisville Slugger

Conf 'M' from IN  3-2 Record

Backman started out with 3 nice wins including that comeback against Precision and a run rule win over Smash It Sports.  But then dropped two straight in games where they did not look all that sharp at times.  Backman did wrap up the regular season championship and cannot lose the #1 seed for the Major at the Nationwide Conference Championships in a month.  So getting healthy and then getting in sync at the Conference Championship is the focus now for manager Dal Beggs.  Backman has had trouble with the Scene this year but hope that the bigger fields will solve that problem.

Tied 5th Place Vivid/Worth/Klutch

Conf 'AA' from TX  5-2 Record

If it wasn't for The Scene being such a big story the story of the Michigan Major would have been Vivid.  They were 17th in points coming into the tournament and were still in jeopardy Saturday morning of not making the Major then rattled off huge wins over Texas rival BHR, Precision, and Team Combat then had Resmondo all but beat in the bottom of the 7th when some tough chance errors opened the door for Resmondo to score 8 runs and win the game 34-31.  But the job was done by that point and Vivid is headed for the show with a veteran group led by their new pitcher Buckshot and a lot of good power hitters.

TG/Red's lost a marathon battle with Scene 37-34 where they scored 18 runs in the top of the 1st inning in the quarterfinals.  Then knocked off 'AA' rivals Xtreme and TM Sports in close high scoring affairs.  Then lost a late night Saturday game to Smash It Sports 41-23 after their third string pitcher Rocky Staton joined the first two pitchers (Jonas and Roop) on the DL after getting hit by line drives.  Red's almost made it to Sunday at the Last Chance for what would have been the 4th straight year I believe.  TG/Red's is now 13-4 vs 'AA' teams…nice

TM Sports was about as low mentally as a team can be after Team Adiktiv sent them to the loser's bracket in a 20 run mercy rule Saturday morning.  But they persevered and won 4 straight including sending Newbreed home 37-33 and played their way into the Major World Series.  A bunch of youngsters still learning the game mixed with veteran pitcher Dan Bean and infielders John Sullivan and Clif Williamson and the veteran Wally Maybrier somehow all put it together for one afternoon much like they did at the HOF Classic back in April and snuck into the show.  Congratulations!

After the Combat company closed its doors 2 weeks ago you would think the team might be in flux and maybe it is.  But they won the Portland Major and then beat Xtreme and Line Drive in the Michigan Major so that is a testament to the players to keep playing through adversity.   They did end up losing to Smash It Sports and Vivid but will have to look to being spoilers going forward for the rest of the season.
