The 2016 Hall of Fame Dual tournament is considered by many to be the true season opener in the Nationwide Conference USSSA as 33 of the top teams in the country battled it out on 9 different fields at either the Osceola County Stadium and surrounding baseball fields or the nearby Fortune Road Athletic Complex. The first tournament began Wednesday evening with a charity home run derby which had just begun when rains came and washed out all but the first round. Kyle Pearson of Smash It Sports and Miken was credited with the win as he hit 5 home runs in less than favorable wind conditions when most hitters were hitting 1 or none. Then on Thursday morning bright and early at 8 AM eastern time the first Duals double elimination tournament began. The upsets hit early and often as Texas 'A' team Bear Hollow knocked off NC-AA team Bad Draw 29-26 over at Fortune Road. OH-A 3rd Street beat MN-AA Xtreme 28-7. OH-A JBL/Tailgaters who had a play in game won 3 straight games to open the tournament including a 19-18 win over WY-AA Team Racks. And CA-TBD Bay Area Legends started to make a mark on the HOF with wins over TX-AA Vivid 25-21 and IL-AA Precision 13-11. The rest of the favorites "survived and advanced". In the 2nd round besides Bay Area Legends there were no upsets and in the 3rd round some huge 'AA' matchups developed. CA-AA OC Swats came from an 11-3 deficit against MI-AA Line Drive to force extra innings and win in dramatic fashion on an Isaac Gonzalez walk off homer. JBL/Tailgaters held off OH-AA TG/Red's Astros 11-10 back on Field #1. Meanwhile #1 NY-Major Smash it Sports and #2 IN-Major Backman were on a collision course to the finals as they each rolled through their first 4 games and met in the Winner's bracket championship.
In the winner's final Backman got a 3 for 4 with 3 home runs and a walk performance out of right fielder Neil Haglund which led to a solid 19-12 victory. Smash It Sports then dropped to the loser's final and fought through a "pillow fight" vs TG/Red's and held them off 8-6 getting a doubleplay to end the game. In the championship game Friday evening it was all Backman as they fought against the wind blowing in. Backman scored 11 runs in the first inning on 10 hits. Ryan Harvey hit 2 home runs in the game and MVP Brian Logan was 3 for 3. Backman won easily 20-4. There was also some terrific defense as Smash It Sports SS Mike Umschied made a great diver and roll over throw. Wegman in left field brought back a foul ball on the left side and second baseman Brad Reckart made a diving stop. Backman left fielder Jeremy Yates caught one against the wall and defensive sub Jeff Lahair at third base made a great diving stop.
After an early evening on Friday in the first Dual the teams prepared for the "longest day in softball" the start of the second dual on Saturday morning at 8 AM. The second dual is often dominated by "fresh" teams that didn't do well in the first dual and often becomes a war of attrition late into Saturday night and Sunday morning. Again the upsets were early and often and some of them were shocking. In the first round KY-A Buffalo Wings and Rings upset Team Racks 36-34. NY-A Thunder/Blowoutpicks.com upset Precision 32-18. NJ-A Above All Landscaping knocked off Newbreed 11-7 as the winds blew in hard all day on the Osceola Stadium, F1, F4, and F5 baseball fields keeping the scores at very low levels. And the shocker of the year CA-TBD Bay Area Legends taking on #1 seeded Smash It Sports in the first round forced extra innings after being down 11-5 and had a shot to win in the bottom of the 7th. Then they scored 3 runs in the bottom of the 8th to send the game to the 9th where they needed 2 to tie and 3 to win and they got a walk off sacrifice fly and beat Smash It 18-17! This banished Smash It back to field #5 where they won a couple of games before OC Swats sent them home with a 13th place finish. A devastating blow to the points championship for Smash It Sports who had won the Las Vegas Major earlier in the year.
In the second round of dual #2 the only 'A' team to win was Above All Landscaping who knocked off Bad Draw 44-37 over at Fortune Road on a rare field that had the wind blowing out. In the final 4 Backman held off The Scene 19-18 in a game that was close most of the way. Steven Lloyd hit a 3 run homer for Backman in the bottom of the 5th to put them up 12-8. The Scenes Jason Branch who had 2 homers and 2 triples in the game gave them a 13-12 lead in the top of the 6th. Backmans defense and power in the wind was the difference again though. TM Sports advanced to the winner's championship with a big 17-15 win over Combat in an entertaining game we will have up on the video archives soon. And in that winner's final Backman got a Ryan Harvey BOMB in the top of the 5th to go up 10-5 and scored 5 runs in the 5th and 5 in the 6th to win 20-8 over TM Sports.
Late Saturday night OC Swats forfeited to Combat in the loser's bracket and The Scene was out of gas and forfeited Sunday morning to Combat. So it was Combat and TM Sports in the loser's bracket championship at 9:30 AM. In that game TM Sports Robert Blackburn and Wally Maybrier helped their team out to a 11-0 lead and the game was fairly close with TM Sports leading until the 6th when Combat closed the gap. With the wind blowing in strong TM Sports put up an impressive 8 run top of the 7th inning only to lose on a dramatic comeback by Team Combat and a 3 run walk off homer by their second baseman Kyle Pearson.
In the championship the wind played havoc with the score and Combat center fielder Brian Zirkle and left fielder Filip Washington made sliding catches to keep Backman to a 4-3 lead and it was 5-5 after 4 complete innings. In the top of the 7th Backmans Jeremy Yates tripled and scored and Combat went down 1-2-3 and Backman won their second tournament in 4 days! They score an incredible 564 Nationwide Conference USSSA points!
Here is a bunch of notes of things I saw at the tournament that I didn't have time to write into the report:
Nightmares Zane Trammell ran down OC Swats fly toward left field line and made a leaping catch as he hit the fence. Great catch.
Thunder took advantage of Precision errors late for the upset.
Mark Harvanko of Eurotech walked off BHR with a homer.
Eurotechs Patrick Ellwanger hit a homer into stadium from F1
Slayer had a walk off hit to beat All Out
Reds needed a run to avoid run rule vs Swats but came all the way back and won 38-30.
Above All led the whole way vs Newbreed Saturday morning.
Racks was down a bunch of players.
Combat was 6-3 winner on F1 over 3rd Street with wind coming straight in.
Ian Sidebottom CF for TM Sports made a full running diver vs Above ALl in winners quarterfinal. Same inning Blackburn in RF makes diver.
All In was up on Classic 22-20 before winning 37-21.
Vivid walked off All In with a Jason Bridges grand slam on F3 he claims is his first homer on a baseball field.
Smash Its Kyle Pearson caught a popup that went straight up from Brambilla on the shortstop side of second base. Pearson is the SIS 1st baseman! lol. Shows you what the wind was doing.
The 'A' teams made better showing than I thought. And how about that Bay Area Legends. WOW what a game against Smash It and they also won two games against 'AA' teams.
I have to say the tournament ran smooth and ahead of schedule except for that one field on Saturday which had wind blowing out and was waiting on teams from fortune on a field with wind blowing out.
There were very few complaints about the ball or umpiring. Most teams had their ups and downs and 32 of the teams across all divisions were competitive with each other. Even Backman squeaked by 3 times.

Long Bombers of the Week
Smash It Sports Kyle Pearson won the home run derby. I felt Ryan Harvey hit the longest bomb on Saturday night vs Combat. Also heard Nightmares Argen Dodd and Xtremes Lyf Nimmo hit some creatures. Adam Rockoff hit one of the longest over on F1 where it is hard to get it out to left center with the 35 foot high wall.

It was all Backman for 4 days straight. They felt confident in the close games and used power even in the wind, speed, defense, and pitching to sweep both duals and take a commanding points lead into Columbus, Ohio in a couple of weeks. Backman is built for the stadiums and bigger fields and will be a handful for all opponents in 2016. Very impressive power with the Bomber tour types Kennington, Harvey, Powers, and Haglund. The speed and energy is contagious, and the defense at times can stifle teams.
