FINAL! 2014 Nationwide Conference USSSA Computer Rankings!

The season is over and Resmondo's performance at the Major World Series pushed them ahead decisively in the computer rankings for the first time all season.

Interestingly enough Baugh Ford edged out Albicocco and eventhough Backman beat Precision at the Major Precision edged ahead of Backman in the computer rankings with their extra points for winning 'B'.

By the way Resmondo also had the highest strength of schedule (SOS) for the year putting to rest the myth that they play the easiest teams each week.

Laservision had 2nd highest strength of schedule.

I will put together the all time conference computer rankings to see where these teams stand but I believe Precision will have the highest end of season computer ranking for a 'B' team of all time and Baugh and Albicocco will be close if not the highest ever in the 'A' division!

SoftballCenter's Overall Nationwide Conference USSSA Computer Rankings

Sort by Class

The minimum number of Conference games 'B' and above games to be eligible for the Computer Rankings will change as more tournaments are played.    The computer rankings rules have been unchanged since its beginning in 2008.

The Rankings are sorted by Average Points per game against at least 17 'B' teams or higher.

SOS stand for "Strength of Schedule"

Rankings Formula explained:

Each team receives:
8 points for defeating a Major class team
5 points for defeating an A class team
2 points for defeating a B class team

Each team receives an additional:
8 points for winning a tournament
 6 points for finishing 2nd
 4 points for finishing 3rd
 2 points for finishing 4th

And finally each team has their point total reduced by:
1 point for each time they lose to a major team
2 points for losing to an A team
3 points for losing to a B team
4 points for losing to a C team
6 points for losing to a D team
8 points for losing to an E team.

Each teams total points are then divided by the number of games they have played against upper level (Major, A, and B) teams.

So the formula in mathmatical terms would be:

AveragePointsPerGame =
((WM*8)+(WinA*5)+(WinB*2)
+((WinTourny*8)+(2ndTourny*6)+(3rdTourny*4)+(4thTourny*2))
-((LossM*1)+(LossA*2)+(LossB*3)+(LossC*4)+(LossD*6)+(LossE*8)))
/ (total games vs M, A, B)

In short the formula is:

AveragePointsPerGame =
((weighted wins against upper teams)
+ (weighted top 4 in tournament finishes)
– (weighted losses))
/ (# of upper games)

The average points per game is then sorted highest to lowest and those are the rankings.

  1. Cliff Conner says:

DW, how is OI Livingston behind Precision? Which numbers are the determining factors?

    thanks
    Cliff

    • DW says:

Precision is at 1.06 and OI is at 1.00. That is virtually a tie. 6 100’ths of a point difference.

But if you look across the spreadsheet Precision is 3-0 vs ‘A’ teams and OI is 3-5 vs ‘A’ teams. That is the biggest difference.

The formula for the computer rankings is written in the above article.

Basically wins against higher class opponents and finishing in the top 4 of a tournament give you positive points. And losing to lower class opponents give you more negative points.

      • Cliff Conner says:

ok, i was just seeing that OI has more points and a higher total win percentage. I wasn’t sure if they had played head to head or if the win percentage against M, A, B was the difference.

thank you again for taking the time.

        • DW says:

Precision did beat OI Livingston by 20 in Columbus but head to head doesn’t affect the computer rankings.

  2. Above all says:

They looked good, nice pickup from kid from Georgia he mashed it, Murray, rip monte, good balance of speed and vets like this c team to make some notice come c worlds…

  3. Conflicting standings? says:

DW what do these stats determine? The USSSA site has different rankings. Which are used for Conference berths?
