Note: as always I write this report before stats are available and awards are usually passed out.  I have to rely on what I see at the fields and with as many as 12 games going on at once at 3 different parks it is impossible to be accurate on who did well and who didn't.

I will also add manager quotes as I receive them.

The 2014 edition of the annual Hall of Fame Classic "dual" tournament is over and Laservision/H. Auto/JJ's/Easton won both!  Laservision went 12-0 and defeated Resmondo-Specialty Tank/Worth in the winner's bracket final and also the championship of each tournament.  Laservision used great defense, sound pitching, and timely offense, often making the most of their opponents mistakes and outlasted the record breaking field of 41 Nationwide Conference USSSA teams.  Laservision takes a commanding lead in the seasons point standings much like Resmondo did a year ago after this event.

The 5 day long softball event began on Wednesday night as the power hitters of the Conference met to hit in the charity Home Run Derby at the beautiful Osceola County Stadium.  The winner was Resmondo's Bubba Mack.  Then on Thursday morning bright and early at 8 AM, the first Dual tournament began with action on 7 fields every hour and a half.  The big upsets of the first tournament came in the second round where Above All Landscaping a 'C' team beat Slattery Logistics an 'A' team 11-9.  This game and most of the upsets occurred on the larger baseball fields where scores were low and defensive mistakes led to losses.  OI Livingston a 'B' team out of Georgia knocked off Line Drive Sportz a top 'A' team 12-7, and a 'C' team from Kansas B&B Drywall knocked off an 'A' team 4 The Fallen/Miken 18-14.  The 4th upset of the second round was yet another shocker as Broughton/Turks (B) dropped Red's Astros (A) 16-13. In the third round the top seeds all won except for Taylormade as Broughton an 'A' team won for the second game in a row 19-14.  In the quarter finals Laservision used a walk off homer by Scott Kirby to beat Albicocco 22-20 back on field #1 which is probably the most difficult place for a right hander to hit a homer with that 40 foot high net on top of the long fence distances.  Backman/Shoppe run ruled a hot hitting OI Livingston team 39-24.  Baugh/Doerflinger beat major Team Combat 20-12, and Resmondo squeaked by Broughton 22-17 with a late inning offensive surge.  In the semi-finals Laservision run ruled Backman/Shoppe on Friday night 33-18, and Resmondo beat BaughFord/Doerflinger 18-12 after Baugh failed to take the lead down 2 with the bases loaded in the bottom of the 6th.  In the 7th inning Resmondo put up 5 runs and an incredible diving catch of a Dan Bean line drive by Resmondo third baseman Jimmy Salas all but sealed the game in the bottom of the 7th.

In the finals Friday afternoon Laservision knocked off Resmondo in the winners championship 26-13 and the championship game Friday night 15-13 to win their first dual event in team history.  Resmondo had kept the games close with some great defensive plays themselves and the pitching of Andy Purcell, but Laservision had more offense and some great defense of their own to go undefeated.

The second tournament began on Saturday morning at 8 AM with 10 fields playing every hour and a half.  BaughFord (A) barely squeaked by Above All Landscaping (C) 19-16, and Laservision (M) got past ChecKing (B) 19-8 after the score had been just 9-8 in the 6th inning.  Classic Glass (B) knocked off Taylormade (A) with their hit and run style 31-14, Diamond & Ice Sports (B) smoked 4 The Fallen (A) 21-10, and Pure Romance (B) held Line Drive Sportz (A) to just 5 runs to win 9-5!  In the 3rd round all of the higher seeds won except for Albicocco (A) who was upset bigtime by TG Brand 29-28!  In the quarter finals it was the same big 4 teams winning as it was in the first tournament with Laservision, Baugh Ford, Backman, and Resmondo winning fairly easily.  The final results of the second tournament would be the exact same as the first.  Laservision capitalized on Resmondo errors and beat them 23-8 in the winner's final on Saturday night and again in the finals on Sunday afternoon 25-17.  Baugh Ford was 3rd after beating Backman/Shoppe impressively 25-15 at 8 AM in the morning after both teams had played late into the night the previous night and were on their 13th and 12th games respectively.

The tournaments were long and grueling but well played and you have to be impressed with the level of hustle and effort all of the teams were giving after playing as many as 14 games over 4 days.  There were 160 games where conference teams played conference teams, a new record.  And Saturday alone 77 games were played in one day!  WOW.

The tournament had no rain delays, the evenings were spectacular, the days were sunny and in the 80's with high humidity.  Scores were lower for the most part and home run hitters earned their pay.  Stadium ZN's – 47 core 500 compression were used on the baseball fields which are the biggest in softball.  The 24 umpires who came from all around the country did a good job and games were on time except for the late ones Saturday night.

Team by team notes brought to you by:

1st Place – Laservision/H Auto/JJ's/Easton

Conf 'M' from NY  12-0 Record

Laservision dominated both tournaments offensively (26 runs per game) and defensively (12 runs allowed per game).  If it wasn't SS Luis Reyna making one of his patented on the ground smother the ball backhands, then it was Bazat making a long throw from the edge of the outfield grass at middle infield, or 2B Steven Lloyd making some sort of twisting double play turn or leaping catch.  And lets not forget about all of those long running and sliding catches by center fielder Brandon Dillon or the great pitching and hustle defense by Travis Clark!  Awards aren't out yet but I am guessing either Clark or Reyna got Defensive MVP, possibly Dillon.

The offense was just as good as all of the starters stepped up when power hitter Dale Brungardt went out (knee) and Brett Helmer came out of the lineup.

Laservision is on a roll (20-1 on the year) with already as many tournaments won practically as they have had the last two seasons.  Going 4-0 vs Resmondo isn't something you see very often (if ever).  Laservisions national tour continues this weekend at the Corky's.  Catch them at a park near you soon!

How did your teams long weekend at the HOF tourny go, and how do you stack up against the competition?

Laservision manager/player Brett Helmer – "The Dual is the hardest event of the season.  The possibility of playing so many games on baseball fields and the sheer number of quality conference teams makes this very hard.  We played tremendous team defense throughout both dual events.  Likewise, our offense was very consistent over the 4 days, we put a lot of pressure on our opponents by scoring early and often the majority of our games.  Being able to win both Dual events really helps in the point standings and gets us off to a nice start for the Conference season."

Just to clarify when I said Brungardt was "smart beyond his years" during the USSSALive finals broadcast, I was speaking in terms of softball.  🙂

Bottom of lineup from Lloyd down was 16-22 in one game I scored against Resmondo.

Trending Up!

Laservision pitcher Travis "The Warrior" Clark is just that, a warrior.

The guy started this journey to the elite level by being sort of a guy that didn't have a position.

He could play them all from SS to outfield but to get to the top level really did so by making himself a great pitcher.

Steven Lloyd continues to be the talk of the Conference with his play on defense and his high onbase percentage

USSSALive interviews 3rd base coach Dal Beggs

JJ is the Conference's youngest sponsor ever, and he has won all 3 tournaments they have played this year!

2nd Place – Resmondo-Specialty Tank/Worth

Conf 'M' from Florida  10-4 Record

Resmondo failed to win either tournament but at least when I was watching I thought they played the best defense of any team and their pitching was the best as well.  Except for the last game where the defense and pitching fell apart (walks and bad throws) but after 14 games I will not even count those mistakes.  It was the offense that let Resmondo down and we all know with the great hitters they have throughout the lineup they will be able to correct that.  No reason to push the panic button here.  They will get their rematch in Columbus, Ohio in 2 weeks. Greg Connell sat out Sundays games with a knee problem he will get checked out.  Bubba Mack filled in in the prestigious Resmondo two hole and played second.  Lee Powers seemed to be platooning.

It was their defense and pitching that beat Baugh Ford 3 times and in the 6th and 7th innings of most of their games they held teams down (13 runs per game) to either zero or one run in the late going almost everytime.  The problem was the 15 runs a game Resmondo averaged against major teams in 5 games.

Outlook: Look for Resmondo to bounce back quickly and pull their team chemistry back from the brink of disaster.  A more positive body language and less arguing would be a good start.

Conf 'A' from AL  10-4 Record

Baugh Ford improved their record against the top Major teams to 6-6 on the season and made a claim for being the top 'A' team in the country.  The team held most opponents below 20 all weekend and dug down deep late Saturday night to make it to Sunday and again reached down deep to beat Backman/Shoppe 25-15 to finish 3rd in both tournaents.  Huge points, more great defense from middle infielder Jeff Flood and SS Brad Reckart, and they should have beaten Resmondo at least one of the two close games they played against them.  There is a great chemistry on this team that seems to follow manager Rob Humphrey around, which doesn't bode well for the rest of the 'A' division.

How did your teams long weekend at the HOF tourny go, and how do you stack up against the competition?
BaughFord manager Rob Humphrey – "We played hard and as a team.  We played lose and have great chemistry which helped us to come from behind in a couple games. Over all our defense played well for this time of the year. We ended up getting a little banged up after 14 games but as as soon as we get healthy, we like our chances against anyone this year."

Backman beat all of the teams they were supposed to beat except for Baugh Ford.  The team played without 3rd baseman Sam Lopez who was home with a sick daughter.  Rainwater was catching, LC Watson was doing most of the pitching, Kevin Kennington was hitting long bombs, and the team was sorting out its lineup and rotations.  A work in progress, was hoping to see this team get some quality wins though they did get solid points.

How did your teams long weekend at the HOF tourny go, and how do you stack up against the competition?
Backman / Shoppe / Louisville Slugger manager Larry Q – "The HOF Dual gave us a chance to get out for the first time this year.  Being our first outing of the year with some new additions to the team it gave us an opportunity to work with the line-up and try to get it set for the season.  We are looking forward to competing.  This year looks like it could have some of the best match ups that teams have ever had since the Conference has been in existence."

How did your teams long weekend at the HOF tourny go, and how do you stack up against the competition?
Precision/Easton's Bill Wax (sponsor/manager) – "I was impressed by the level of talent and competition at the HOF Dual this past weekend. The heat and number of games played in the first event takes a toll, and impacts the level of play as the second event winds down. The offense was good once we got a game under our belt, and the defense was pretty good but both will need to get better as the season progresses. How did your teams long weekend at the HOF tourny go, and how do you stack up against the competition?

You either play a team up or a team down. Yes, there are a few games within your division but not enough. What I saw is that everyone is competitive – top to bottom and that's good. OC Swats has some work to do. Our infield defense is outstanding. The offense sputters right now. We seem to be playing only 3 innings and not all 7.
