The 2013 Nationwide Conference USSSA season continues in Houston, Texas this weekend at the Space City Classic! Lets call this March Madness in April as a full bracket of 64 teams will participate and one thing is for sure, we will crown a new Conference winner! None of the 64 teams has recently won a Nationwide Conference event. The event was moved from June to April and since it is just a week before the big Dual tournament in Florida it was only able to draw 7 Nationwide Conference teams. The favorite is Buzini/BWW/Worth who finished 2nd to Resmondo a year ago. Other favorites will be Fence Brokers/Hubs Pub/GTS/Worth from Arkansas and Baugh Ford/MOJO/Louisville Slugger from Alabama. The tournament will be played at the beautiful Big League Dreams park which features 6 miniature MLB fields.
Teams will begin play on Friday, April 12th at 6 PM central time and will play late into the night both Friday and Saturday to get the 127 games in on schedule.
My picks for the tournament: I believe Buzini will beat ASPNation.com/Easton in the finals with FBI 3rd and BaughFord 4th. This tournament will be a test of attrition and should have a lot of upsets with the wall ball in play and the crazy things that can happen when you have to win so many games to make it to Sunday. Should be fun. I will also get my first look at some new Nationwide Conference teams like Vivid Software and South Texas Posse.
The weather looks to be good. It is usually very hot at this tournament in June, but the weather here in April is showing a high of 80 all weekend! I will stress again that this is a tournament that all A and B teams should mark on their schedule for years to come. Hopefully they move the date in the future to put a one week buffer between any tournament and the dual in Florida.
