Resmondo awaits the winner of GTL/Doerflinger/R&M and Nordkap/Suncoast/Reebok
It didn't take Resmondo-Specialty Tank Worth very long to establish themselves as the #1 team in the nation as they win both legs of the Nationwide Conference USSSA's 8th annual Hall of Fame Classic! Resmondo went 12-0 over the grueling 4 day event and defeated Nordkap/Suncoast Reebok 26-11 in the championship of the first tournament and GTL/Doerflinger/R&M/Easton 19-12 in the championship of the second. The only other team to win both Dual tournaments was Dan Smith in 2009.
The Hall of Fame Classic (HOF) had an NCAA "feel" to it as the long anticipated bracket of the record 38 Nationwide Conference USSSA teams came out last Monday. Much like the NCAA basketball tournament selection shows the bracket was received with some teams being happy with their seeding and others wishing they could have avoided the top teams early on.
On Wednesday the players began arriving and some participated in a 100 player Home Run Derby with the proceeds going to Grace Landings Charity. The winner was Laservision and Florida native Kevin Kennington who put on an impressive display of +400 foot BOMBS! Kevin defeated Kevin Filby and Chris Larsen in the semi-finals and Brett Helmer in the Championship and earned and automatic berth in the Major World Series Home Run Derby in Sepember at ESPN's Wide World of Sports.
Now if we could only fill the stands with the amount of fans the Astros draw…
Maybe a big D/E regional on the same weekend could help fill the stands?
The first Dual tournament started on Thursday morning on 8 different fields with very few upsets but very well played games in near perfect weather. As the tournament went along, the teams that adjusted to wind and field conditions the best usually won the game. The cream did rise to the top as Remsondo battled Laservision in the winner's bracket finals with two of the top 'A' teams, Shoppe and Nordkap in the final 4. There were also some of the best 'B' teams in the top 16 – Buzini, Reds, Baugh ford, Adiktiv, Precision, OC Swats, and DEI.
The second Dual tournament started on Saturday morning at 8 AM and had a few more upsets. Laservision got knocked to the loser's bracket early on by H. Auto, a 'C' team with some experienced players out of Minnesota. Team Combat lost to Precision out of Illinois in their opener. 'B' teams like Famous sent home Demarini/Dirty on Saturday night. At the end of the winner's bracket though it was Resmondo beating GTL/Doerflinger/R&M 19-12 with GTL getting to the finals by knocking off Shoppe 20-7.
41% said Laservision would win. I picked Resmondo in the first and Shoppe in the second.
Yes they did! Hortenbach Auto/Easton/Hooters pulled the biggest upset with their 21-16 win over Laservision

Resmondo-SpecialtyTank/Worth
Conf 'Major' from FL 12-0 Record
Resmondo dominated both tournaments by winning 9 of their 12 games by the run rule. The pitching of Andy Purcell and the defense behind him were flawless as no team scored more than 19 runs, while Resmondos offense put up a low of 17 and was usually in the 20's or low 30's. 8 opponents were held to 11 runs or less. SS Don Dedonatis Jr who was defensive MVP and middle infielder Dennis Rulli were using their body to stop the hard shots, Jimmy Salas was making great diving catches, and the "dynamic duo of speed" center fielder Nick Santana and left fielder Jeremy Yates were closing the biggest gaps in softball. Hats off to Resmondo who dominated every phase of the game and have pushed themselves to #1 in the nation. A spot they may not relinquish for a very long time.
The offseason moves that Resmondo has made the last two years by bringing in Jimmy Salas, Bubba Mack, Nick Santana, and Jeremy Yates coupled with veterans like Jeremy Isenhower and Dennis Rulli who were coveted free agents have made this team strong and the youth movement is paying dividends.
Andy Purcell's pitching was MVP in my book, but I think Resmondo always gives MVP to the highest onbase percentage for the weekend

Nordkap/Suncoast Reebok
Conf 'A' from MN 11-4 Record
Nordkap/Suncoast Reebok beat all of the top 'A' teams, run ruled Laservision, beat all of the hot 'B' teams (Famous, Precision, Buzini) and only lost to Major teams Resmondo and Laservision until the last game when they gave away an extra innings game against GTL/Doerflinger/R&M when they failed to score one run in the bottom of the 7th to end it.
Nordkap played an incredible 15 games and these guys had mini seasons within a 4 day period. Hot streaks and cold streaks, injuries nursed to semi-health and gutted it out late into the night each day. I have nothing but respect for what this team accomplished and they really are looking like a top 3 team who could do some damage at the end of the season (if they can still walk). The team has the power of a Major-, the defense of a Major (led by Reyna and Pesso), and the offense of an A+ or Major- team. And they can all run the bases pretty good. When you look at the teams and scores below, it was an amazing 4 days for the KAP!

Shoppe/TYJA/Louisville Slugger
Conf 'Major' from TN 8-4 Record
Shoppe won their first 3 games in each tournament with some good quality wins like the two they had over Demarini/Dirty, Reds, and Taylormade. They struggles some against Resmondo, came up short against Nordkap twice, and was held down offensively by those teams and GTL/R&M. The lack of offense against the big teams is interesting but the Shoppe team has great depth, a solid defense, and enough big hitters to at least be in the hunt for tournament championships on a weekly basis.
I heard Shoppe is now going to go to Columbus, Ohio making that a 4 point event with 3 major teams present.

4th Place – GTL/Doerflinger/R&M/Easton
Conf 'A' from WA 8-4 Record
In true R&M fashion, the new GTL/Doerflinger/R&M team overcame pre-tournament adversity and in tournament injuries to win 8 games! They lost to 3 major teams and beat Reds, Linedrive, Nordkap, and Taylormade. Nice. GTL/Doerflinger/R&M needed just one run to tie and two to win against LaserVision in the first tournament and went 1-2-3 in the bottom of the 7th. The bad luck turned to good in the second tournament as they beat Nordkap 8-7 in extra innings to go to the championship.
GTL is an interesting mix of veterans like Bumgardner, Bisbee, Genter, and McDonald and the young guns like Brandon Dillon, MI Kevin Bazat, and LF Kyle Pearson. With a sponsorship group and managers who have won 3 of the last 4 'A' Worlds you have to wonder if this team will just get better and better?
If there is a big game to be played on ESPN then GTL/Doerflinger/R&M will be there.

Laservision/Desert Falls/Boombah/Easton
Conf 'Major' from NY 7-4 Record
Laservision/Desert Falls won their first 4 games before being beaten by eventual champ Resmondo 34-3 in 3 innings. Then they were run ruled by Nordkap a few minutes later 39-19. In the span of a couple of hours they had lost two games by 51 runs in a total of 7 innings. Up until then they were undefeated for 2013. In the second tournament they were upset in true NCAA 15 seed to 1 seed fashion by H. Auto in a game they trailed most of the way 21-16. In the loser's bracket they were starting to climb back towards a Sunday finish when Taylormade ended their run 31-23 after a big late inning comeback against Linedrive 36-34.
Laservision outfielder's Brian Rainwater and Brian Wegman played about half the time as they nurse injuries. Their outfield defense and pitching continue to struggle. Laservision had no answer for Purcell, TJ, and Curtiss Wilson among others this weekend. Look for Laservision to be ready to go in Nashville in a month.

Demarini/Dirty/Xtreme Athletics
Conf 'A' from FL 7-4 Record
Demarini was a little banged up and had some players like Joe Gordon coming off of offseason surgery. They had a nice rotation at pitcher with Brandon Jonas and Shawn Jones. At times they outpowered opponents with Adam Rockoff, Chris Larsen, Dale Brungardt, and Andrew Collins. Shoppe had their number twice and they lost unexpectedly to Famous late on Saturday night. Other than that they looked pretty good, with as much (or more) talent than 2012.

Precision had three big wins (2) over Team Combat and 1 over Sonny's. Precision has a few guys from the old EWS squads and showed some nice linedrive hitting and solid hustle. The Precision team, like Adiktive and some others is better than expected. They just need to improve each week and try to find some consistency with the sticks. This team is better built for the 300 foot fences.

TG came alive in their first two games of the second tournament but couldn't find the 2012 HOF magic to pull off the big upset over Nordkap.

Primetime beat Adiktive then dropped 4 straight. In 3 of them they scored less than 10 runs. Hopefully Primetime can get things going on the 300 foot fields and show they talent that they have.

Trust let their opener slip away to Nightmare late in the game then had a big win over "4 The Fallen" 11-10 before dropping 3 straight over the next couple of days. A fun young team that can surprise some teams in the midwest.

South Texas Posse had some tough draws as a new Nationwide Conference team. They did score a nice win over DEI and competed in their games that were not against Major teams.

B&B is good enough to make a mark in the Nationwide Conference. Looks like Taylormade had their number and an ouchie loss to WSC.

This is WSC's best team in years. They knocked off B&B Sears and scored some runs in their last 3 games. One step forward for WSC who is looking for some players. If anyone is interested email Paul at pbtank67@hotmail.com

S&S Pools wasn't at full strength as they had to make some pickups in order to make the trip. By the looks of it, maybe picking up some offense would be the way to go. 🙂
Just kiding, hang in there, its a long season.

My apologies if I spelled a name wrong.
Very few questions were asked after the managers meeting. I asked if a bat that is intentionally broken should be replaced with another in the bucket. Answer was no. A question was asked about the military team that gets the 18 seed for the world series? Answer was it will be an all star team.
The "West Side Mexican" getting it done at the hot corner!
