2012 USSSA ‘B’ World Tournament report!

 USSSA 'B' World Tournament

Kissimmee, FL

Sept 14-16, 2012

Pure emotion as D2E wins the 'B' World Tournament on a walk off homer by Geno Burdick in the bottom of the 7th!!!!!!!!

The 'B' Worlds started on Friday night with all 27 teams (24 'B' teams, 3 'C' teams, 19 of which were from Conference USSSA) playing at least one game.  The tournament was seeded on Conference points first and then USSSA points second.  The top 5 seeds (D2E, Linedrive, Reds Astros, BuziniSports, and Primetime) received byes from the first round.  Much like the 'A' Worlds last month at the same Fortune Road Park in Kissimmee, Florida the scoring was down,  and home runs were not all used even though teams only had 4 to hit, and upsets were commonplace.  ChecKing/Worth out of Connecticut beat BaughFord.com and then #5 seed Primetime 14-13 on a walk off single by veteran Justin Valenti in the bottom of the 7th.  AZM out of Arizona knocked off TG United then lost themselves to #4 seed BuziniSports.com 11-4 in the night cap.  Combat/Rockstar out of Seattle overcame a 5-0 deficit in the first inning came back and held on to beat P&P 333 13-12 only to lose to The Scene on Saturday morning 34-19.  Fence Broker's knocked off 4 The Fallen 22-7 in a game they led the whole way.  Then FBI tied Down2EarthSports.com on Friday night 15-15 going to the bottom of the 7th when D2E's Leslie Griffis hit a walk off homer to beat them.

In the bottom half of the bracket Westshore Pizza from Tampa, Florida used a 2 run homer by Dan Dillingham in the first inning and never looked back to beat TPS/Sports Center 11-6 and then led the whole way again in a win over #3 seeded Reds Astros 22-17.  Xtreme/Combat from Minnesota, similarly used a 2 run homer by veteran Chaun Demars in the first inning against Magic/S&S/TYJA and never looked back en route to a 27-11 win.  Then on Saturday morning Xtreme hammered B&B/Sears 33-20 to make it to the final 8.  B&B had come from a double digit deficit in their "play-in" game against Suncoast/Lozanos earlier in the evening to win.  SBS/CSC/Combat from northern California used a Joe Yusko inside the park grand slam to break a 4-4 tie with 3rd Street Financial in the top of the 7th and went on to win 10-5.  This set up a second round 8 AM game with Headhunters/Cancooker out of Georgia.  It would end up being one of the best games of the tournament.  The game went into extra innings when Joe Yusko hit a 2 run double to tie the game in the bottom of the 7th.  In extra innings Headhunters jumped out to a 3 run lead.  In the bottom of the 8th after a couple of walks the bases were loaded and the game winning run came to the plate in the form of Kaeo Rubin with one out.  Rubin proceeded to hit the ball over the 325 foot fence in right center field but Headhunters right fielder Raley Vincent made a running/leaping two step push off the fence to elevate himself up above it and got enough glove on the ball to knock it back into the field of play.  The runners had to hold, or thought it was going to be a home run, and they only advanced one base for a single.  The next batter grounded into a double play and Headhunters won 15-13!  The final team to make the "Elite 8" was Linedrive Sportz out of Michigan.  They beat Columbus Pipe 19-12 after jumping out to a huge early lead.  Pipe had to win a game earlier in the night over OC Swats where Swats led by 7 in the bottom of the 7th and Pipe scored the 8th and winning run on a base hit by Billy Moore.  It was Billy's second hit of the inning.

In the final 8 on Saturday, ChecKing won 11-4 over Buzinisports with a strong wind blowing in on field #2.  D2E had a 5 run first and led the whole way against The Scene but The Scene had a chance in the 7th, coming up short in a 12-10 loss.  In the bottom half of the final 8, Westshore Pizza led the whole game against Xtreme/Combat and held on 14-12, and Linedrive used a Billy Barrett bottom of the 7th walk off single to beat a dejected Headhunters team after Headhunters had tied the game at 9-9 in the top of the 6th and taken the lead on a 3 run homer in the top of the 7th by Larkin Grant.

The final 4 stage was set.  D2E handled ChecKing 20-7 to move to the winner's bracket championship.  In the bottom half of the bracket Westshore Pizza stunned Linedrive Sportz with a 7 run bottom of the 7th to win 16-15.  Shawn Zipperer had a huge pinch hit single and Joey Labriola scored all the way from first base on the hit to tie the game.  Then Nick Utley won the game with a deep gap shot to right center field.

In the winner's bracket championship game a confident D2E team found themselves in a tight low scoring game midway through the game.  Late in the game, Leslie Griffis struck again for D2E with a big 3 run homer and D2E held on to win 13-10.

The loser's bracket meanwhile was littered with shattered dreams of winning the worlds as teams fell by the wayside.  Reds Astros won 3 games before being stopped by Buzini.  P&P 333 knocked off 3 straight conference teams before Buzini knocked them out.  But the real story of the loser's bracket Saturday was Jolt, a 'C' team out of Florida, won its first game at 9:30 AM against 3rd Street Financial 15-13, then beat Rockstar 11-9, OC Swats 12-10, Xtreme Combat 13-12, Headhunters 15-10, and late Saturday night they beat ChecKing 20-19 to make it to Sunday!  6 wins in a row!  On Sunday morning however they almost missed the game with too few players and although they had a shot to get back in the game against Buzini, down 5-0, they never did score and lost 20-0 in 4 innings.

Then Buzini took on Westshore in the loser's bracket championship.  The game was close and the ball quit flying and Westshore's outfield was running down most everything.  Then in the bottom of the 7th with the game tied at just 10 a piece, a walk, a single by Justin Stuart, and a walk off single by Kelly Hartman ended the game with a Buzini win.

In the championship D2E finally had to play from behind against Buzini and in the bottom of the 7th needed 2 runs to tie and 3 to win.  A walk to Bruce Nail and a single by Leslie Griffis set up a game winning home run by veteran Geno Burdick to win the game and the 'B' World title for Down2EarthSports.com/SBC/Worth!

The tournament was played in humid and warm weather but overall it wasn't bad.  Conference rules with no floating rubber and no second strike foul were used.  The tournament had conference or veteran umpires on all fields and the Fortune Road fences were 310 down the lines and 325 in LC, CF, and RC.  The wind did affect most fields.

There were only 4 run rule games in the tournament and 37 of the 52 games were decided by 5 or less runs!

The "Mojo Masher" of the week is:

D2E's Leslie Griffis

Griffis has already been mentioned a number of times for his walk off homer Friday night against FBI, his big homer against Westshore Pizza in the winner's championship and his base hit to setup the winning homer by Burdick in the finals.  Griffis is an underrated hitter and was very focused and delivered some big blows while playing third base all weekend.

D2E shortstop Todd Hilton was co-Defensive MVP

1st Place – Down2EarthSports.com/SBC/Worth;lkajsdlkgajaljnresmondo-specialty tank worthresmondo-specialty tank worth

Conf 'B' from Baxley, GA  5-0 Record

D2E continues to defy all odds.  They finish as the highest seeded 'B' team for the second year in a row with a vastly different roster.  They make a key pickup in pitcher Justin Mucciarelli.  They show up with just 11 starters and a backup pitcher.  No pinch runners, no pinch hitters…and stick it in my eye! and win the 'B' World title!  Congratulations to Drew and the whole team on a great effort.

D2E started with a walk off home run win by Leslie Griffis against FBI on Friday night.  Similar to what R&M Metals did at the 'A' Worlds when they needed a walk off on Friday night and went on to win the tournament.  D2E had a confident feeling from the beginning and the team chemistry was the best it has been all year long.  Then they held off The Scene 12-10 in the quarter finals while leading the whole way and jumping out to a 5-0 lead.  In the semi-finals they beat ChecKing pretty soundly 20-7 and scored late to beat Westshore in the winner's final 13-10.

In the championship game on Sunday the confidence melted away a little as Buzini held them down through the middle part of the game and they were down two going into the bottom of the 7th and staring an "if" game in the face.  But they did get a nice catch by the fence by Brandon Connell in left field, a great backhand and throw from the hole by shortstop Todd Hilton, and a "cover the hole" linedrive grounder stab by pitcher Justin Mucciarelli to hold Buzini scoreless in the top of the 7th to get some momentum.  Looking back they also got an assist from right fielder Jason Gillfillan in right field earlier in the game that ended up being big.  Then in the bottom of the 7th needing two runs, Todd Hilton drew a walk, Leslie Griffis smashed a solid single to left, and Geno Burdick took Donald Plaisance first pitch over the left center field wall for the win and the title!  And the celebration was on!

Mooch and Burdick take a lot of heat in the softball world.  But they have won championships before and were the key to this one as well.  If you don't have haters, you are probably not having success.

2nd Place – BuziniSports.com/BWW/Worth

Conf 'B' from Jackson, MS  6-2 Record

Buzini won a low scoring opening game on Friday night over AZM 11-4.  Then they lost on field #2 with the wind blowing in to ChecKing 7-4.  It looked like Buzini, which is built almost perfectly for the 'B' division might fall by the wayside.  But in the loser's bracket they won another ridiculously low scoring game 6-2 over P&P 333.  They beat a tired Reds Astros team 10-5.  Then they got a second wind after dark against Linedrive and scored a big top of the 7th inning behind a clutch two out hit by Steve McLin and a grand slam by offensive MVP Kelly Hartman to take a 23-18 lead and win it with the gloves 23-20.

On Sunday morning they hammered Jolt 20-0 and used a Hartman walk off single to beat Westshore 11-10.  In the finals against D2E, they had D2E chasing most of the way and came up just short on the walk off homer by Burdick.  Buzini averaged just 12.2 runs per game and let up an incredibly low 7.75 runs per game!  Wow.  If they only let up 7 at the Major this Wednesday night against Laservision, they might pull off a shocker!

Buzini third baseman Steve McLin had a big hit on Saturday night vs Linedrive to help Buzini make it to Sunday

Claude Simoneaux was talked out of retirement and had some big pinch hit home runs for Buzini.  (I think I called him Brooks Bryan on the webcast)  oops

Buzini takes the lead in the Championship game

Kelly Hartmans winning hit vs Westshore Pizza

Justin Moreau scores the winning run on Kelly Hartmans single to beat Westshore to go to the championship game

3rd Place – Westshore Pizza/TPS

Conf 'B' from Tampa, FL  4-2 Record

Westshore Pizza saved their best tournament for last.  They beat TPS/Sports Center in their opener solidly.  Then shocked Red's Astros 22-17 to make the quarter finals.  There they led the whole game over Xtreme/Combat and won 14-12.  Then they scored 7 runs in the bottom of the 7th inning to beat Line Drive 16-15.  They got a two out clutch single from Shawn Zipperer that scored Joey Labriola from first base to tie, then got the walk off winning hit by Nick Utley.  In the winner's bracket championship D2E beat them 13-10 in a game that could have swung either way.

On Sunday in the loser's bracket championship Buzini beat them 11-10 in a defensive war.  Westshore came up short but showed some great defense.  The outfield covers the whole field.  The infield led by shortstop Roberto Pajon and middle infielder David Garcia made some nice plays and the offense at times looked like a track meet.  A fun team to follow for next season!

"Whit" put together a nice team and rumors have them headed for the 'A' division

Labriola in CF, Kirkwood in LF, and Curtis in RF really do cover the whole field out there

4th Place – Jolt

Conf 'B' from Hunington, FL  6-2 Record

Jolt lost their opener on Friday night 15-10.  Then on Saturday no one wanted to step up and beat them, so they rattled off 6 straight wins, most of them by 2 runs or less to make it to Sunday where they had some players show up late and lost 20-0.

Jolt has some good talent and they never give up.  Had they played the rest of the tournament on Saturday, Jolt may have finished higher.

Jolt finishes as the highest 'C' team in 'B' World history (I believe).

Jolt infielder Knoblauch is another of the up and coming young Florida talent

If this grand slam attempt had gone 321 instead of 315 to CF, Jolt would have pulled to within 5-4 of Buzini

The veteran Randy Vollmer played SS for Jolt

Tied 5th Place – Line Drive Sportz/SSS Softball

Conf 'B' from Warren, MI  2-2 Record

Line Drive jumped out to a big lead early on Columbus Pipe and won 19-12.  Then in the quarter finals they won on a table setting hit by Dan Hall and a walk off single by Billy Barrett to beat Headhunters 13-12.  In the semi-finals Line Drive held down Westshore Pizza in a low scoring game until the bottom of the 7th when some hard grounders got through the infield and Westshore scored 7 runs to beat them 16-15.

In the loser's bracket Line Drive held a lead most of the way in a great game against Buzini as darkness came and the ball started to fly better.  Then late in the game, again some hard shots and bad bounces through the infield led to the Kelly Hartman grand slam and Line Drive's 'B' title hopes disappeared 23-20.

Billy Barretts game winning hit against Headhunters

Tied 5th Place – ChecKing/Worth

Conf 'B' from New Haven, CT  3-2 Record

ChecKing got the win over BaughFord by a nice 31-16 margin in their opener.  Then they used a walk off single in the bottom of the 7th by Justin Valenti to beat Primetime 14-13 later Friday night.  On Saturday in the quarter finals they beat Buzini 7-4 with the wind coming in and affecting anything in the air.  In the semi's they were beaten by eventual champ D2E 20-7.  In the loser's bracket Jolt beat them 20-19 late on Saturday night in a game that took forever.  ChecKing is a regular on Saturday nights at the 'B' World now and they got some nice play out of pitcher Mike Verbasco and shortstop Jason Longo.

ChecKing pitcher Mike Verbasco held down opponents all weekend

Tied 7th Place – Reds Astros/TPS/Sports Den

Conf 'B' from Indianapois, IN  3-2 Record

Watch Reds Astros center fielder Wally Maybrier play in the Major World Series this Friday night live on USSSALive.com

Reds lost their opener to fellow TPS team Westshore Pizza 22-17.  Then in the loser's bracket they ran through Baughford 10-5 with two homers late in the game, TG United 18-10, and The Scene 17-5.  Right when the buzz around the park was thinking Reds might run through it, they ran out of gas against Buzini in a 10-5 loss.  Reds has bigger things ahead of them than the B Worlds and we look forward to their first World Series appearance on Friday night against Nordkap/Desert Falls.

Tied 7th Place – Headhunter/Cancooker/SHSsports.com

Conf 'B' from Fayettville, GA  3-2 Record

Headhunters beat Jolt in their opener 15-5 on Friday night.  Then on Saturday Raley Vincent the right fielder made that incredible play climbing the right center field fence to save a grand slam homer and Headhunters beat SBS in extra innings 15-13.  In the quarter finals they came from behind against Linedrive in the 6th and 7th and took the lead on a Larkin Grant 3 run homer in the top of the 7th.  But in the bottom half Linedrive scored 2 runs to win it.  In the loser's bracket they just got past Magic 19-18 before Jolt sent them home 15-10.  In that last game Headhunters looked completely out of it.  It will be fun to see Headhunters take the next step in 2013 and make the Major World Series where as we witnessed at the Smokies they can add to the show!

Headhunters RF Raley Vincent (who I wrongly called Parker on the broadcast) made the play of the year when he "two step" climbed the RC field fence at the 325 mark, elevated himself above the 8 foot high fence and got enough of SBS/Combats Kaeo Rubin grand slam walk off homer attempt to keep in the park.  The next SBS hitter grounded into a double play and Headhunters won in the 8th inning!

The Rest of the Top finishing teams  G

#9 P&P 333/Suburban/Larrys/AOS/Combat 3-2 – P&P 333 jumped out to a 5-0 lead in their opener against Combat/Rockstar then Rockstar slowly came back and took the game away from P&P 13-12.  In the loser's bracket P&P made a nice run eliminating T's 13 16-13, held off SBS who had the hammer in the bottom of the 7th 11-10, and sent Pipe packing 16-13.  Then Buzini beat them 6-2?  I guess P&P was out of gas or maybe the wind affected the game that much.  P&P finishes the season 22-21.  They were 7-8 against 'B' teams and did win the NSA World last weekend.  P&P will be ready to fight for the 'B' Championship in 2013.

#9 The Scene 2-2 – The Scene broke a 6-6 tie with T's 13 in their opener with a home run and won 11-6.  In their second game on Saturday morning they beat Combat/Rockstar with some incredible defensive plays, a full out dive by center fielder Evan Gallmeier, and a leaping stab by second baseman Kenny Leach.  The offense then exploded to a 34-19 win and the highest score of the tournament.  Against D2E in the quarterfinals they could never really get the lead and had the hammer at the end but came up short 12-10.  In the loser's bracket Reds was just too much for them in a 17-5 loss.  The Scene had the majority of their players that they had at the Arkansas major where they won the tournament but the offense was just too inconsistent this weekend.

John Robinson gets the scoring started on Friday night with a home run

?

#9 Xtreme / Combat 2-2 – Xtreme/Combat blew through their opener 27-11 over Magic then had a big lead over B&B and won 33-20 but never could run rule them.  In their quarter final game against Westshore, Xtreme trailed the entire game and lost 14-12.  In the loser's bracket they were "Jolted" 13-12.  Xtreme brought their fans with them and had plenty of people watching the livestream back home.  They added Chaun Demars to an already potent lineup and had all of the pieces to make a run, which they did.

#9 Magic/S&S/TYJA/Easton 3-2 – Magic had a tough draw having to play the best non-Conference team Xtreme/Combat in the first round.  Xtreme built too much momentum and ran away with it 27-11.  In the loser's bracket Magic led the whole way and beat Suncoast/Lozanos (the old Blockers team) 16-2, then used a great defensive play by first baseman Chris Carr to beat AZM in extra innings 16-12.  Magic wasn't done yet as they beat Sports Center 18-17 and then lost to Headhunters 19-18.  So close.  Magic had their best team ever this year, and were making some progress here at the end of the season.  It is possible that without additional sponsorship that this team could possibly not come back in 2013 which would be a real shame.  Any sponsors that want to step up to a quality 'B' team that is knocking on the door to the top of the 'B' division can contact me and I'll put you in touch with John Hickey and Scott Sunderland.  Magic was an impressive 13-7 vs 'B' teams this year.

#13 Columbus Pipe/DSS Bats/Easton 2-2 – Pipe scored 8 in the bottom of the 7th to beat OC Swats in their opener on Saturday night.  Then they had a letdown early on against rival Linedrive and had to scratch and fight their way back but lost 19-12.  Pipe picked up former middle infielder Brian Blount, first baseman Bryan Goins, pitcher Bobby Noeth, and outfielder Billy Moore.  Some nice pickups and I'm sure they were thinking they would be a contender.  In the losers bracket Ricky Potter hit a grand slam to give Pipe a 12-9 lead and a 16-10 win over 4 The Fallen.  Then they ground out a loss to P&P 13-10 in a game neither team seemed to want to take control of.

Billy Moore caps an 8 run rally in the bottom of the 7th to push Pipe past OC Swats

#13 TG United 1-2 – AZM shut TG United down 13-6 in their opener Friday night.  Then TGU jumped out to a big lead early on and beat B&B Sears 23-20 before Reds sent them packing.  TGU will play in the 'C' Worlds this coming weekend and come back as a Conference 'B' team in 2013!

#13 OC Swats 1-2 – OC Swats picked up Johnny Gallegos, Charlie Case, Chris Arrendondo, and pitcher Oscar Shipley.  They looked confident in their opener against Columbus Pipe but failed to add to their lead in the top of the 7th and gave up 8 runs to Pipe in the bottom of the 7th to lose 14-13.  In the losers bracket Swats beat FBI late 12-8 after the game was tied at 8.  That was probably Swats biggest win of their USSSA season.  Then they were tripped up like many others by the deceiving Jolt team 12-10.

#13 TPS/Sports Center 1-2 – A rough year for Sports Center comes to an end with a 1-2 finish.  They couldn't score against Westshore in their opener on Friday and lost 11-6.  Then on Saturday morning they beat Primetime when Primetime beat themselves on a bases loaded fly out throw em out 12-11.  Then they lost to Magic 18-17.
