American Legion Softball

American Legion/Easton Softball team started a journey in February with their sights set on the ultimate prize in the month of August.  In the month of August, the United States Specialty Sports Association (USSSA) 2012 Military World Softball Tournament was being hosted on Panama City Beach, Florida.  The tournament dates were 16-19 Aug 2012 to play at Frank Brown Sports Complex.  Over 114 military softball teams competed in this event.  The tournament was set up in the following programs:  Varsity A, Varsity B, Intramural, Women’s, Over 40, and Mixed.  The tournament opened up on 16 Aug 12.  The Legion competed in the Varsity “A” program.  The format for the tournament was a Pool Play and based upon the results the team was seeded according to our record.  Here are the results of the pool play games:

American Legion/Easton (FL) – 22 and FKA/JAK’D (GA) – 8

American Legion/Easton (FL) – 41 and Fort Meade (MD) – 21

Based upon the pool play results, the brackets were set to crown the overall world champion.  Here are the results of the bracket games: 

American Legion/Easton (FL) – 24 and Fort Meade (MD) – 9

American Legion/Easton (FL) – 18 and Team Bragg (NC) – 8

American Legion/Easton (FL) – 23 and Scrapalators (NC) – 14

Based upon the above results, the Legion team was setup to return on 20 Aug 12 and wait on one of the teams in the loser bracket to determine the outcome of the tournament.  On Sunday, the weather got worse and significant amounts of rain was dump on the complex.   After several hours of waiting; the tournament director decided to cancel the remaining games of the tournament due to the inclement weather. 

The American Legion/Easton softball team was the only undefeated team left in the Varsity “A” division and was crown 2012 USSSA MILITARY WORLD CHAMPIONS.

The Legion team finished the tournament in 1st place with a 5 and 0 record.  The Legion team batting average was .754 with 37 home runs.  The team average was 25.8 runs per game.

The American Legion/Easton Softball Team is comprised of active duty military personnel and one civilian.  The following is a list players that made this season a memorable one:  Tommy Melton (USAF), Joshua Wiggs (USAF), Robert Goddard (USAF), Travis Wollison (ANG), Michal Dochwat (USA), Casey Chance (USAF), Inez Ornelas (USAF), Jim Bawcum (USAF), Dustin Kentzell (USN), Zac Turissini (USAF), Tre Campbell (USA), Jay Cortez (USAF), Lee Diaz (USA), Jerry Surber (USA), and John Atkinson (Coach).

Team players travel great distances to participate in this tournament.  The following states were represented on the team:  Hawaii, Wyoming, Texas, Virginia, and Florida.

Without the hard work, dedication, long hours, travelling to tournaments, and a lot of days in the searing heat and humidity; the dream of being crown the world champions was realized in the month of August.

The Legion team thanks American Legion Post 356 and Easton Softball for their continuing support and faith in us to succeed.  

Also, the Tyndall Intramural team played in the tournament.  As a result of their hard effort, timely hitting, and defensive gems the were able to finished
