2012 "Peach State Shootout" Atlanta Major tournament report

2012 "Peach State Shootout"

Marietta, GA

May 26-27

Presented by Down2EarthSports.com

Demarini/Dirty/3N2/ATWLDesigns out of Orlando, Florida backed up their Conference tournament win in Indiana two weeks ago with a 5-0 performance at the "Peach State Shoot-Out", beating Shoppe/Team TPS/Elite 36-16 in the championship game.  Demarini and 3rd place TYJA-Suncoast Reebok cruised through their first 3 games each on a collision course to meet late Saturday night in the winner's final.  In the winner's final, a two hour slugfest, TYJA-Suncoast Reebok jumped out to a 13 run top of the first inning and held leads of 15-5 and 27-17, using two double plays and a strikeout to keep the Demarini offense in check.  Demarini/Dirty never gave up though and came all the way back to trail 36-29 to start the bottom of the 6th inning.  Demarini would score 10 runs in the 6th to take a 39-36 lead into the 7th.  TYJA scored 2 in the top half of the 7th and had the tying run on 2nd when Defensive MVP SS Steven Loyd made a nice play to get the final out.

On Sunday, Shoppe, for the third week in a row made a run through the loser's bracket and beat D2E 24-8 and TYJA-Suncoast 19-17 to make it back to the championship game against Demarini.  In the championship Demarini/Dirty took the heart out of a tired and banged up Shoppe team as they posted a 30 run lead and flip flopped and beat Shoppe 36-16, but to Shoppe's credit they never did give up.

The DownEarth "Peach State Shoot-Out" didn't start until Saturday morning at 8 am.  The play in round was uneventful with no real upsets to speak of.  In the second round D2E got past The Scene by 5, Headhunters beat Baugh Ford by 1 in extra innings when Ron Pearce lined a knuckle ball off of the BaughFord  shortstops glove with the bases loaded and Baugh was only able to get a force play while the winning run scored.  B&B/Sears had a nice 15-6 win over Primetime, and Taylormade broke open a 14-14 tie in the 4th inning with Westshore Pizza by scoring 15 runs in the 5th and run ruling them 29-14.  Demarini/Dirty also struggled some with Major League but pulled out a 21-15 victory.  Meanwhile 454, TYJA, and Shoppe all moved on easily.

In the third round, TYJA jumped out to a huge lead on D2E with some clean hitting as D2E didn't give them any errors and TYJA run ruled them 26-9.  454 waited til late to get by Headhunters 13-9 when neither team could really get anything going in the heat of the day.  B&B/Sears jumped out to a 9 run first on Shoppe and never let off the gas as they beat Shoppe in a stunner 24-8.  And Demarini/Dirty knocked off Taylormade 21-19 when Taylormade made a late charge.

In the semi-finals TYJA-Suncoast hammered Team 454 39-24 and Demarini/Dirty crushed B&B/Sears 25-7.

Note: all bats were re-tested before Sunday and zero bats failed compression testing for the final 4 teams.

The Mojo Masher of the week conference is Chivas Clark

Chivas Clark has been tearing it up from the 3 hole in the Down2EarthSports.com lineup.  Onbase percentage of .707 with 31 HR's and 91 RBI on the season!  Chivas isn't a "newbie" to the conference as he played with PrimeTime in the past, but is new to most upper level fans.

Team by team notes brought to you by:

1st Place – Demarini/Dirty/3N2/ATWLDesignsGTGGNo Nolkjdsa;lkajsdlkgajaljn

Conf 'B' from Orlando, FL   5-0 Record

Demarini/Dirty wins their second conference event of the season, joining Nordkap/Desert Falls and Resmondo as the only teams to do so.  Dirty does it in spectacular fashion with a come from behind win against TYJA-Suncoast in the winner's bracket championship and a dominating performance against Shoppe in the championship game.   Dirty continues to show great chemistry, gutty defense, and a lineup that can bat around the order at any given time and in any inning.

Against TYJA they were down 15 runs and batted just 6 times and 3 of the innings ended in 2 double plays and a strikeout which swung the momentum to TYJA but Dirty still came back and persevered through it and won the game.  From a rash of 3 run homers to the inning ending line drive stabs of their dual pitchers Tony Elrod and Shawn Jones, this team can win in a lot of different ways.

Top to bottom this team is quickly showing one of the best lineups in the game and their youth and enthusiasm, which I call a healthy swaggar, is getting under the skin of some of the veteran teams.  They are fun to watch and now make a push to be ranked #1 in the country…we will see.

Terry "Chitty" Baggs is more than just a power hitter.  He "plays the game" like the rest of the team when needed.

2nd Place – Shoppe/Team TPS/Elite  GTGG

Conf 'A' from McKenzie, TN   6-2 Record

Shoppe pitcher Dan "Dirty" Sanchez, 2B Jeff Payton, and RF Cory Boothe

Shoppe stumbled for the 3rd week in a row against a 'B' team and then recovered for the third week in a row by running the loser's bracket nearly to the end.  Two second place finishes and a 3rd over the last 3 weeks, a stretch where they played 26 games in 17 days.  Shoppe is tired and battered but get a couple weeks off before Chicago.

In Atlanta they knocked off a very good OI Livingston team 39-37, sent Taylormade home by the run rule, jumped out to a huge lead vs Team 454 before hanging on 37-35 after midnight Saturday.  Then woke early and beat D2E and TYJA/Suncoast before dropping big to Demarini in the finals.

Shoppe is playing great softball.  The fact they haven't broke through and won a tournament is frustrating but they should be a good candidate to win in South Carolina next month.

3rd Place – TYJA – Suncoast/Reebok GTGG

Conf 'A' from Great Neck, NY   3-2 Record

TYJA infield, SS Luis Reyna, MI Dennis Rulli, 2B Victor Cordova, 1B David Kessler

TYJA-Suncoast Reebok was crushing teams one after the other, D2E, 454, then they started to do the same thing against Demarini/Dirty with that impressive 13 run first inning before  the wheels came off a little and the momentum swung Dirty's way and TYJA fell by the wayside.  On Sunday they got beat by Shoppe in a close game and really need a win there to try and get revenge on Dirty.

TYJA is adding CA Sports first baseman Jason Baxter and infielder Matt Crawford.   TYJA is a top tier 'A' team still trying to get their final lineup set.  I hear they have the MqQuade on their schedule which should be interesting.

TYJA was the early favorite to win the tournament as they cruised through their first couple of opponents with some big innings early on

4th Place – Down2EarthSports.com/SBC/Worth  GTGGied 7th

Conf 'B' from Baxley, GA   4-2 Record

D2E always plays well in Georgia.  They handled the Scene fairly easily in their opener then watched TYJA put a whoopin on them in the 3rd round.  In the loser's bracket they had some big innings which led them past Westshore, Primetime, and B&B/Sears on Saturday night.  Then on Sunday morning Shoppe knocked them out 24-8.

Dustin Kentzel pitched most if not all of the weekend for D2E and the team now has an impressive record against the 'B' division 9-2 and the 'A' division 3-5.  Those are numbers that are worthy of a 'B' World title run.  This years team is made up of almost exclusively Georgia players with only their pitchers from outside of the state.

Sponsor and Manager Drew Dubberly congratulates his new pitcher Dustin Kentzel who is active duty Navy according to the SoftballCenter chat room.  We thank Dustin for his service on this Memorial Day!

Tied 5th – B&B/Sears/N&N Finishing  GTGGied 7th

Conf 'B' from Clayton, NC   3-2 Record

B&B/Sears is your surprise team of the tournament.  They cruised past a local team, then Primetime, and jumped out to a big lead against Shoppe and never looked back.  Sitting 3-0 on the weekend and in uncharted territory they then dropped two straight to Dirty and D2E.

A great weekend for B&B.  I got to familiarize myself with some of the players and the lineup:

Cory Franklin
Celestino Jacinto III
Edmund Locklear
Keith Whitman
Jeremy?
William Maloney
Todd Boyer
Rich Racobaldo
Eric Bunn
David Byrum

Tied 5th – Team 454/Emerald/Worth GTGG

Conf 'A' from Glen Allen, VA 2-2 Record

Team 454 had everyone except Don Rogers who is out hurt.  They smoked OI Livingston in their opener 17-1 then scratched their way past Headhunters in the heat of the day.  That set up an 8:30 PM showdown with TYJA where they were outslugged 39-24.

In the loser's bracket late on Saturday night they came from 17 down against Shoppe early on to make an interesting finish but lost 37-35.  In the game Tim "Tiny" Taylor the manager of 454 had numerous run ins with the homeplate umpire.  At one point after just arguing a pitch, Tiny argued a second pitch as he came down the third base line saying "now your going to toss me"…the umpire didn't though and play resumed.

I think 454 is a little frustrated right now after they double dipped Nordkap in Dallas, I think they felt like they had stepped up be one of the top 2 or 3 teams in the country.  But the last two weeks have played out differently.  The feeling I have around 454 is they accomplished some of their goals early on and now they are waiting for the 'A' Worlds.

Tied 7th – Taylormade/TM Sports/Mizuno  GTGGied 7th

Conf 'A' from Williamsburg, VA   2-2 Record

Taylormade is starting to dig themselves a hole in points and may soon find themselves opposite the Resmondos and the Laser Visions at the big tournaments.  Tmade opened with a hard fought run rule of Westshore Pizza, then squandered some opportunities against Dirty in a 22-19 loss.  In the loser's bracket they won against a local team before Shoppe sent them to the showers.

Taylormade has a fun team with some good athletes.  They are missing a big stick though and maybe need to look at some players that have sat out the year and dust them off and bring them out to help with the offense.

Taylormades CF Brian Logan climbs the ladder

Taylormade picked up former Westshore Pizza infielder Billy Moran

Tied 7th – Primetime/Easton GTGG

Conf 'B' from Macon, GA 4-2 Record

Primetime did not compete well with B&B Sears on either side of the ball and lost 15-6.  In the loser's bracket they beat BSC rival Pace 24-14, a good East Coast 19-15, in state rivals Headhunters 21-18, and then D2E sent them packing 26-16.

Primetime still hasn't put it all together for an entire weekend but in my estimation is the best BSC team in the nation and I have seen Pace and Specialists.

Primetime 3B Lee Daniels

The Rest of the Conference Teams:

Tied for 9th – Headhunters/Cancooker/SHSSports.com – knocked off BaughFord in the bottom of the 9th inning, then competed with Team 454 for half a game before falling 13-9.  In the loser's bracket Primetime sent them home 21-18.  This team is a work in progress and a solid 'B' team who is taking their lumps this year in hopes it will pay off in 2013.

Headhunters winning hit vs BaughFord

Tied for 9th – Westshore Pizza/TPS – had Taylormade tied at 14 in the 4th before Tmade turned it on and run ruled them.  In the loser's bracket sent home two local teams before D2E beat them 15-12.

Tied for 13th – BaughFord.com/AdvantageSports/Worth – nearly got out of a bases loaded jam against Headhunters in the 9th inning but lost 19-18.  In the loser's bracket a very good OI Livingston team sent them home.

Tied for 17th – Adiktiv/D2E – hung with Dirty for a while.  Even had a chance in the 7th inning to come back.  Then in the loser's bracket they got beat by an 'E' team SHS Sports 24-17?

Tied for 17th – The Scene/Easton – lost to D2E and sent home by a very good 'D' team SPN.
