ASA Hall of Fame Stadium in Oklahoma City, OK.    Long Haul takes on Dan Smith in the Championship

Dan Smith/Menosse/Shirts and Logos based out of California put together an ASA (American Softball Association) 'A' team using 5 RPL (Restricted Player's List) Major players from their regular team and won the 2010 'A' Championship!   After losing their first game Friday night to Spurs after leading 21-0, the Dan Smith squad re-grouped early Saturday morning and sent 7 of the 15 teams home.   Dan Smith double dipped Long Haul in the Championship, and captured the first title using the new roster rules.

 2010 Class 'A' Champion Dan Smith/Menosse/Shirts and Logo's

Long Haul finished second and cruised through their upper half of the bracket with ease enroute to their victory over FBI/GameTimeSupply.com/Worth in the winner's bracket championship on Saturday night.   Long Haul was put together with veteran stars Dennis Rulli, Bryson Baker, and Jeremy Isenhower leading the way mixed with a cast of up and coming 'A' players from various teams like EWS, AJS, Albicooco, and Aubreys.

15 teams began the double elimination 'A' tournament on Friday afternoon.   All teams that won their first round game, played again Friday evening.   The ball was flying and scores were very high, with winning teams often batting around the lineup at least once in each game.

The tournament was full of rivalry match ups like NW Combat vs Ting's (two teams with Canadian players).   NW Combat vs their sponsor Team Combat, Mr D's vs Pipac, and of course Long Haul vs Dan Smith.   One thing became apparent as the games became more important towards the end of the tournament and that is, the major players really came to the top of the batting average scoreboard.   The top players were putting up multiple near perfect hitting games.    Wegman, Brown, Baker, Helmer and the rest of the cream rose to the top.

 Team by Team Review:

1st Place   8-1 Dan Smith/Menosse/Shirts and Logos, CA

Dan Smith opened their tournament Friday night with a 21 run 1st inning and a 13 run 3rd inning against Spurs to take a 34-12 lead.   In what is being called one of the greatest come from behind upsets in Championship play, the Spurs rallied to beat Dan Smith 41-40 in a game that featured 92 hits between the two teams.   Dan Smith scored just 6 times over the last 4 innings.

Instead of winning and sleeping in, and not having to play until 5 PM on Saturday, Dan Smith now had to return to the field in the loser's bracket at 8 AM.   They then went on a two day rampage of offensive fireworks.

First they sent home Checking 34-27 after Checking jumped out to a 15-0 lead in the first inning.

Next they knocked off a very good Famous Sports team 26-22 in a game they never really trailed.   Center fielder Rick Baker made a great slide catch to dash the Famous teams hopes in the bottom of the 7th.

In their 3rd game on Saturday, they were tied with Mr. D's 15-15 after 6 innings.   The Dan Smith defense turned a double play in the top of the 7th to hold Mr. D's scoreless and Brian Wegman hit a 3 run homer (his 3rd of the game) to win it in the bottom of the 7th.

In their 6:30 PM game over on Field #4 they had a rematch with the Spurs.   In the 3rd inning they batted for over 20 minutes and scored a tournament high 28 runs and won the game 61-11!   Rick Baker was a perfect 7 for 7 in the game.   The team batted just 4 innings and collected 59 hits.

In the final game of the night which ended after midnight, Dan Smith out slugged NW Combat 47-33 in a marathon 7 inning game.   Wegman, Baker, and Buck each homered twice and Dan Smith used a 19 run 4th inning to overcome a 21-14 deficit.   The good news is they were 5-0 on the day.   The bad news is they had to be back at the fields at 8 AM and try and win 3 more games to get the Championship.

On Sunday morning Dan Smith trailed FBI 15-8 going into the bottom of the 3rd inning in the loser's bracket championship.   Smith rallied to take the lead 17-15 on a Brad Reckart 3 run homer and went on to score 21 runs in the inning.   The inning lasted so long that I went over to the ASA Hall of Fame and toured the entire building, came back, and they were still hitting.   FBI would not recover.

Dan Smith's "Dynamic Duo" Brian Wegman and Brett Helmer were all business

In the championship Dan Smith overcame an 11-2 first inning deficit and scored 14 in the 3rd to beat Long Haul 36-21 which forced the "if" game.   Dan Smith finished Long Haul in the final game with an 11 run 6th and went on to win 37-24, completing their 8 game win streak to the title.   Brian Wegman, Brett Helmer, and Rick Baker were a combined 30 for 34 with 6 HR, 24 RBI, and 27 runs scored.   Pitcher Geno Buck chipped in on the championship games with 6 HR's.   Over their final 5 games, Dan Smith scored 221 runs and batted 28 innings for an average of 7.89 runs per inning.   Basically over those 5 games on average they batted around the order every inning!

The left side of the Dan Smith infield was JD Genter, Jeff McGavin, and Brian Wegman

Pitcher Geno Buck could have easily been named MVP

2nd Place   4-2 Long Haul Trucking, MN

Long Haul trucking started each game like it was a track meet and the first pitch was the gun signalling the start of a race.   Early and often they jumped out to huge leads, using extra base hits and team speed to pummel the opposition into submission.   They beat Armed Forces and Mr. D's on Friday night.   Then on Saturday they beat Team Combat and FBI to become the winner's bracket champion's.   In their first matchup with Dan Smith on Sunday in the Championship they jumped out to an 11-2 lead and looked like they might cruise to the title with the run rule.   However in the 3rd and 4th innings they put up zeroes and Dan Smith came back and double dipped them as Long Haul goes home a disapointed second.

3rd Place   3-2 FBI/GameTimeSupply.com/Worth, AR

FBI had a bunch of new player's like Jebbie King, Dennis Shrum, and Matt Arlett.    FBI knocked off P-Town Boy's and NW Combat Friday night.   Then on Saturday they beat Spurs 27-21 to make it to the winner's bracket championship where Long Haul ran them ragged and they lost 34-12.   On Sunday morning they had a 15-8 lead over Dan Smith (similar to their lead the week before) but surrendered to Dan Smith after allowing them 21 runs in the 3rd.

4th Place  4-2 NW Combat, WA

NW Combat had a fun weekend and I've learned that the majority of the players that played for them this weekend are going to continue into 2011 as the "Canadian" Conference team that has been rumored.   There were a lot of new faces playing for NW Combat and they showed that they are a great ASA team.

NW Combats weekend started early Friday afternoon with a hard fought 21-16 victory over Pipac.   Then in their second game Friday night they were run ruled by FBI in a game that NW Combat scored in every inning but still lost.

On Saturday they destroyed the Armed Forces 34-6 behind the strength of a 16 run 1st inning and a 24 for 25 hitting performance out of the top of their order (S. Formosa, Jeff Gare, Scott Brown, Franck Henry, and Goetz).  Their next game was a 28-22 win over rival Tings/Orioles.   Then they separated from and run ruled Team Combat 35-18 before losing a late night slugfest with Dan Smith 47-33.   A game in which Scott Brown went 6-6.   Scott Brown and Derek Warren shared the pitching duties for NW Combat.

NW Combat's Scott Brown was an offensive machine (26-31 .839, 8 HR, 25 RBI)

NW Combat had a number of new faces from north of the border

Tied 5th Place   2-2 Team Combat/Laser Vision, WA

Team Combat had their regular season team with no pickups.   Rusty Bumgardner was present but is still out with his neck injury.

Combat hammered RentKing 40-13 behind a 16 run first inning and 5 hits from Johnny McCraw in their opener.   In their second game they went to extra innings against Famous when they failed to score the winning run in the bottom of the 7th with no outs and the bases loaded.  In extra innings they played some good defense and Vince Bisbee hit a walk off single to win the game 32-31.

On Saturday at 5 PM they had a short showdown with Long Haul as LH ran a track meet against them for a 12 run 1st and Combat quickly found themselves down and out 28-8 and out hit 31-10.

In the loser's bracket they played NW Combat even until the 5th when NW Combat put up an 11 spot and Team Combat lost 35-18.

Tied 5th Place   2-2 Spurs/Nichols Trans/Preim Sports, TX

Spurs scored the upset of the year coming back from a 21 deficit to the great Dan Smith team in their opening game Friday night which lasted some 2 and a half hours.

The Spurs team was a mix of players from Savesecond (Smitherman, Ballard, Clay), Wood Law (Fail, Dennis), and Front Row Sports.

In their second game Friday night they rode the momentum from their epic upset and run ruled the Canadian team Tings/Orioles.  Clay Smitherman was 10-11 with 5 HR's and 13 RBI in the two games.

On Saturday it was a different story as they dropped to FBI 27-21 and Dan Smith exacted their revenge on Spurs 61-11.  Ouch

Tied 7th Place   2-2 Tings Moving/HR, Canada

Tings/Orioles are a solid ASA team from Canada led by center fielder and Team Canada lea doff hitter Dave Boldt.  Tings opened with a nice 25-17 victory over Checking behind Boldt's 3 doubles and a homerun.  In their second game they were surprisingly run ruled by Spurs 31-16.

In the loser's bracket Tings sent home SW OK Outlaws 26-19 and that set up a fun matchup with NW Combat which features a number of Canadian players.  In the NW Combat game Kessler? the middle infielder tried to keep it close with some great defensive plays but Tings couldn't overcome NW Combats 12 run 1st inning and lost 26-19.

Tied 7th Place  1-2 Mr. D's Custom Apparel, MN

Mr. D's had the number one seed in the tournament due to their support and points earned in ASA Open tournaments.  However they had some bad luck as their first round bye turned into a second round game against a hot and energetic Long Haul team.  LH jumped out to a 22-9 lead and Mr. D's 8 run bottom of the 7th fell short and they lost 31-27.

In the loser's bracket they came out strong behind Ron Browns 2 HR and 6 RBI and used some great defense with center fielder Andy Hansons great catch and two double plays to beat Pipac 28-20.

In their final game Mr. D's played Dan Smith even for 6 innings but put up a zero in the 7th and lost on a walk off homer 18-15.

Pipac opened with a loss to NW Combat 21-16 when they only scored 4 runs over the last 4 innings.  In the loser's bracket they made quick work of P-Town 29-11 and that set up a grudge match with rival Mr. D's.  In the D's game they didn't match the D's energy and quickly found themselves down 21-3 before a Lossen White grand slam brought them to within 21-16 but that would be as close as the got and lost 28-20.

Pipac shortstop Shaun Beutner was back in action

Tied 9th Place   1-2 Famous Sports / Johnny Blaze, CA

Famous was a team made up of a core of GTL players (Dress, Cordova, Pokraka, Salas, Watson) mixed with Jeff Hall, and some of the Famous 'B' players.

Famous opened with a win over SW OK Outlaws behind Jim Salas's 2 HR and 6 RBI.  In their second game against Team Combat, they 21-10 early then scored back to back double figure innings to take a 31-25 lead.  In the late innings the offense faltered.  Famous recorded a rare 3-2-5 double play with the bases loaded to force extra innings but couldn't cash in on the big break and lost 32-31.

In their final game they had the unfortunate luck of having to play Dan Smith in the loser's bracket and although they trailed the entire game, they did score in every inning and had a 5 run 7th to make it close.

A very good team which squandered that extra innings game against Team Combat and go home thinking "what could have been".

Tied 9th Place   0-2 Armed Forces, USA

The Armed Forces all stars opened the tournament Friday at 3 PM 25-20 loss to Long Haul in a game where they never gave up.  In the loser's bracket the wheels came off the defense and they let up 16 to NW Combat in the 1st inning and lost quickly 34-6.

Tied 13th Place   0-2 Checking/Worth, CT

Checking trailed their opener against Tings the whole way and lost 25-17.  In the loser's bracket early Saturday morning against Dan Smith they jumped out to a 15 run lead in the first but didn't keep the pressure on and lost 34-27.  A game where some defensive mental mistakes were the difference.

Tied 13th Place   0-2 Rent King/Ambush, OK
