An interveiw with Major League/Dynasty manager Donnie Munford
Donnie Munford
Who are you managing/sponsoring in 2012?
I have been asked to manage the MAJOR LEAGUE DYNASTY/D2E/SPORTS55 SOFTBALL CLUB and I feel priviledged to have this offer extended to me.
Why do you like the game of softball?
It gives me the opportunity to travel to different places, see different cultures, meet, greet and fellowship with some of most interesting people
associated with the softball world.
Who is the best softball player you have ever seen?
I go way back and some of the names that I know might not come up on the today's softball circle. I'm talking about guys like Chip Sheffield, The Big Cat Mike Macenko, Craig Elliott, Bruce Mead, etc. Don't think you could name just one, there are way to many. There are "SO MANY" players on the black circuit, if they were just given a chance. I know I have missed a bunch of names, that's why it's so hard to pick one.
Where do you call home?
Fayetteville, Ga.
What do you do for a living?
I own a trucking company.
What is your softball background as a player?
Played some shortstop and second base back in the day. I'm talking about back when we wore coaches shorts with front and back pockets and wore the knee high socks that had the colored rings around the top. LOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!
How did you get your start in softball and how did you get to the upper level?
Playing locally in the Atlanta area and in tournaments when they were set up where every team had a chance to win. Never played upper level ball, it seems to be tough for Afro-Americans to get the opportunity to play on the "upper level"!!
What does your roster and schedule look like?
Greg Millsaps
Matt Rando
David Samples
Greg Milsap
Rodney Roland
Derek Jones
Jason Magnum
Josh Robinson
Craig Davis
Dakota Beavers
Mike Banks
DJ Johnson
Matt Easterday
Ricky Hayes
Heath Center
Coach - Donnie Munford
What is your teams goal for 2012?
First and foremost is to represent our sponsors well and to compete every time we put the uniform on.
Where do you look for talent?
You can find talent all over the place, if you are respected, talent will find you.
How do you evaluate players?
Chemistry and Comraderie is what I look for.
What is your favorite sports team?
HOW BOUT THEM "GEORGIA BULL DAWGS"
Do you have any superstitions and if so, what are they?
None that I know of, but always say a prayer.
What is your most memorable softball moment?
Don't know if I could single out just one but meeting Coach Greg Blackburn of Jean Shoppee and developing a relationship with him over the years trumps it all.
What is the best improvement upper level softball could make to bring in more sponsors?
I think sponsors have had their fill, let's go back to everyone chipping in and being accountable because you have invested in something.
What is your favorite non-World tournament?
Always liked The Smokey, The Mullett and Boone's with Smoker Red doing his thing.
Is the game better or worse with home run limits and why?
Depends on your teams structure. With these balls and bats, if you set a limit someone could be seriously injured.
Who was the best team in softball history?
Different decades and different times.
