Who are you playing with in 2015?
FBI – rumdawgz33@yahoo.com

2011 Interview:

What positions do you play and what is your best position?
Play 3B 2B and 1B. My best position is the hot corner 3B. The harder its hit at me the better off I am. Less time to think lol

Who is the best softball player you have ever seen play?
Seen many great ball players and could never just name one so i'll say Sam Lopez from Shoppe and Dan Dirty Sanchez. Both are from close to home and are great ball players in my eyes. Hard working hard nose players!!!

Why do you like the game of softball?
It was something that kept my dad and I very close when I was growing up. I loved watching him play ball and the atmosphere of being at the ball park with my dad and the team. You meet many different people and I consider my team family and I have made many special friendships through this game I love.

Who is the best up and coming player in softball and why?
Chris Potts, Jason Trammell, Marcus Thortan, Stuart Snell, Justin Stuart, Brady Bascle, Lyf Nimmo. All are hard working hard nose players that are very talented on the ball field and are even better people off the field. I wish all these guys the best.

What is your nickname in softball and how did you get it?
"Money Mike" was my first nickname and coach Tap from RUM D team out of Cali gave me the name and it stuck.
Now its Mickey given to me by Jbird from ASP. Dont know why just how it is. You never get to choose your own nicknames but its grown on me lol.

What is your height and weight?
5'9" 245. Working on the weight though lol

Where do you call home?
Originally from Tulare, California but life has put me in West Monroe, Louisiana.

What's your favorite way to spend an off weekend?
Off weekend? Don't have many of those but when I do just being at home with the family spending quality time is enough for me

What do you do for a living?
Work at the VA hospital as a HVAC tech

Did you play sports in High School / College / Pro?
Played football soccer basketball and baseball in HS
Played Baseball in college

How did you get your start in softball and how did you get to the upper level?
Started playing with Mike Tapia with RUM an E team that moved to D in Cali and from there I moved to Louisiana and Tim Barnes aka coach came and watched me play a little and gave me a oppertunity as a role player to earn a spot on ASP Nations team and I took it and have been with ASP ever since. Would like to thank Lyf Nimmo, Tim Barnes, and Mike Tapia for asking me to play for them. They all are class act people.

What was the most surprising difference between Conference play and non-Conference play when you made the jump?
Consistency on all levels of the game. Its just played at a higher faster level. I was hooked as soon as I played.

Is there a player that you would compare your game to?
Not really. I watch all players and take bits and pieces of what I see and try to add it to my own style of play. We are all different ball players and have different styles. This game is played many different ways and I like to learn from everyone.

What would you say is your career highlight to this point? Maybe one play or game that sticks out to you in particular?
Winning the Space City tourney in 2013 and earning a All Tourney. Also earning a 3rd team All Conference in the 2013 season. Gives me motivation to keep improving.

In your career was there a single person (player/manager/coach) who had the most significant impact on your approach to the game? Why?
Has to be my dad Sal Cervantes. He taught me from the get go how to play the game with respect and to hustle. He taught me this game was based on failure and the great players learn to deal with and learn from their failures. He taught me the mental side of ball as much as the physical part and he showed me how to love the game of baseball/softball.

What advice can you give a young player trying to break into the upper level?
You have to go out and play in front of the right people. You have to play up and always play 110% at all times. Play the game with respect and hustle and you will catch someones eye.

What type of batting grip do you use and what ounce bat?
27oz EL overlap two fingers on top and hang one on bottom

What do you do in the offseason to prepare for the next softball season?
Never really stop playing but also hit off tee a lot in off season. Lift weights and run sprints and agility work. Try to stay ready year around.

What is your favorite sports team and your favorite sport other than softball?
Football- Washington Redskins, LSU/Fresno St
Baseball- Angles/Yankees, LSU/Fresno St

Do you have any superstitions and if so, what are they?
Not really superstition just do a lot of the same things over and over. When something is working why fix or change it lol.

What would be your "at bat" music selection?
Avenge Sevenfold      hail to the king

What is the best improvement upper level softball could make?
I like it how it is honestly. They seem to make improvements yearly so as long as it moves in a positive direction I'm good to go.

What is your favorite non-World tournament and why?
T4T Palm Springs,

What is the best softball field/complex you have played at and why?
Any BLD and of course Disney
