An interview with free agent infielder Matt Albert

Matt Albert

ASA Playing History

USSSA Playing History

Why do you like the game of softball?
I like the game of softball because it gave me a chance to be competitive again when I gave up baseball.   It has also given me a chance to gain many friends that I would have never had the chance to meet without softball.

Who is the best softball player you have ever seen play?
The obvious answers would be the easiest, Jr, Andy, Rusty, Johnny… but I will give you a few that not everyone has listed on these.

I think Bobby Hughes gets over looked a lot, but that guy covered from LF to RF last year on top of killing it.   Derek Warren doesn’t get enough credit for how good of a pitcher he is.   Donovan Pokraka hits some of the hardest balls I have ever seen, pound for pound.   Chente Granados has some of the best hands and quickest release I have seen in a while.   John Hickey may have the most raw power I have ever seen.

Where do you call home?
Shelby, Ohio

What do you do for a living?
I am a high school teacher and an insurance agent.

Did you play sports in High School / College / Pro?
I played football, basketball and baseball in high school.  Played baseball for The Ohio State University, along with Matt Furrey who made his fame with Maroadis.

How did you get your start in softball and how did you get to the upper level?
I had been sitting at home for a few years nursing a shoulder injury.  A few buddies asked if I would play with them for the weekend.  I didn’t know they even had upper level softball at the time.  One thing lead to another and I got a lucky break.

What position do you play?
I started out as an OF but have moved to the IF the last few years.

What batting grip do you use?
I drop 2 fingers of the knob and overlap the bottom 2 fingers.

What is your favorite sports team?
THE Ohio State Buckeyes and the New York Yankees.

What is your favorite sport other than softball?
College football and baseball

Do you have any superstitions and if so, what are they?
Too many to list.

Is slowpitch softball a sport or a game?
Both.  If you just want to have fun with your buddies, then it’s a game.  If you want to be good and either get to, or stay at the top, you better treat it as a sport.

What is the best improvement upper level softball could make?

Go back to aluminum bats and hard balls.

What is your favorite non-World tournament?

Smoky Mountain Classic

Who are you playing with in 2011?

I am a free agent…
