2013 Interview

Why do you like the game of softball?
I don't know, I hate the game at times but thats what fuels my fire. I guess it's the challenge of getting up everyday and seeing what you can do to make yourself better. Whether or not that works out for me on the weekends is another story, but at least I know I put in the work.

Who is the best softball player you have ever seen play?
Brett Helmer hands down. Brett is an ambassador to the game and in my eyes talent alone doesn't make you the best player in this sport. Being approachable and taking the time for those players and fans that look up to you and not being too good for anyone no matter what level you play at or what your name is what makes you great at this sport.

Who is the best up and coming player in softball and why?
That's a tough one, there is a lot of young, hungry talent out there, but Im going to be a homer here and go with Tommy Melton. Very gifted athlete, but what impressed me most was his loyalty to his team. This kid will be on a Major team in 15'.

What is your nickname in softball?
Most everyone calls me by my last name Nimmo. Heck most people that don't know me that well think that's my first name.

What is your height and weight?
6' 1" 250 on a good day

Where do you call home?
I live in a little ole town in West Texas by the name of Breckenridge. But Dallas is where I was born and raised and will always call home.

What's your favorite way to spend an off weekend?
Wished I had an off weekend. If I ain't playing I am at a tournament somewhere working. In the rare event I do get a weekend off, I am getting a line wet drinking some cold beer.

What do you do for a living?
I own ASP Nation. www.aspnation.com (had to get that in there) We are a family owned and operated, grassroots based business that tries our best to offer the newest gear at the best prices for all your softball needs.

Did you play sports in High School / College / Pro?
Never made the cut. Was too small in school and didn't have parents to push me in the right direction. I think that is also, at almost 37 years old, what drives me to this day, never being good enough.

How did you get your start in softball and how did you get to the upper level?
Started playing softball on a company league team some 15 years ago. They asked me to play a tournament one weekend and I couldn't believe there was a such a thing. I was hooked. Walked away from the game for about 8 years after tearing rotator and biceps tendon. Got asked to play again and been climbing the ladder every since. As far as getting to the upper level, well that just wouldn't have happened if I wasn't in the industry and didn't surround myself with good players, and more importantly great guys. I am better now then I was 15 years ago but I still have a lot to learn about this game. If you aren't learning every day, every weekend, then your not paying attention.

What was the most surprising difference between Conference play and non-Conference play when you made the jump?
The respect. The speed of the game is impressive but the respect among fellow ball players was the most surprising difference to me. I don't think I would want to play local ball anymore after having experienced playing ball at this level.

What advice can you give a young player trying to break into the upper level?
Work, work, work. You can never put in enough work. When you take BP, take it with a purpose. Work on your all around game, if you are an infielder by trade then take ground balls, outfielder, shag BP. Just know that one day you aren't putting in the work, someone else is.

What positions do you play and what is your best position?
CF… When we are up by 50… I pitch, play first, and yes for entertainment purposes only I will go to the OF and reminisce on 15 years and 100 lbs ago…

What batting grip do you use?
pinky on the knob, drop two fingers down from my top hand (Thanks DT).

What ounce bat do you use?
27 oz.

What do you do in the offseason to prepare for the next softball season?
Train, take tons of BP, pitch into a bucket, and try not to get too fat.

What is your favorite sports team?
Sadly, the Dallas Cowboys. Its painful. Jerry Jones is the next Al Davis…

What is your favorite sport other than softball?
Football.

Do you have any superstitions and if so, what are they?
Oh man if Coach (Tim Barnes) read this his answer would be explicit. We don't change uniforms when we win. It's almost funny because I will say that we have the sickest uniforms on any given weekend, and by seasons end probably have a half dozen jerseys. But I am working on it. New year, new Lyf…

What is your most memorable softball moment?
Winning the Houston Major this year as a C team. I know, no Major teams were there but that ain't my fault. We won the thing dadgummit!

What would be your "at bat" music selection?
Lol, we actually had walk out music chosen this year for the Major, unfortunately we fell just short of making it. I was given "sic'em on a chicken" by Zac Brown Band. Best bet I was gonna do the crawl all the way to the box.

What is the best improvement upper level softball could make?
You have to limit the number of Major players per team. Its the only thing that makes sense. Until that is done you will never have parody amongst the teams. It's just my opinion, but an even playing field makes for better competition.

What is your favorite non-World tournament?
Halloween Howwwl in Clovis, NM. One of the best directors and even better man by the name of Roger Jackson puts on this annual event that will draw anywhere from 120-140 teams. The atmosphere is just great. One of the only directors that you will see visit every dugout of every team at some point during the tournament. If you haven't played the Howwwl you need to put it on your bucket list.

What is the best softball field you have played at and why?
Got to go with Big League Dreams Mansfield on this one. Short fields, but you just can't beat the turf. Better for your knees and your teeth…

Where is the best place to eat on the road after a game?
Roadhouse. Frosty cold beer in a frozen mug and guaranteed peanut war.

What is the funniest thing you have ever seen on a softball field?
My good friend Drew Dubberly (down2earthsports.com) just for you buddy, came in town for a show a few years back. So we go to the fields to take some BP. Keep in mind I am in Texas and Drew is from Georgia. This guy starts talking softball to me and how he gets this deal and that deal and how good he knows the owner of D2E. I just let him keep running at the mouth as we are shagging the balls that Drew is hitting. When Drew gets done we walk to the infield, and I said to him, "let me introduce you to my buddy Drew Dubberly, the owner of D2E". Drew had no idea who the heck this guy was and the look on ole boys face was priceless. Gotta love the name droppers…

Best sponsor in softball! There are some that spend a lot more but none that invest more of themselves to their team! It’s amazing how hard this kid works and how much he’s grown (not just physically lol). Good Luck with your softball, family and all other future endeavors. Wish nothing but the best for you brother!!

  7. Rhino says:

One of the most “real” and good people in the game. The guy gets a bad rep for being cocky but once you get to know him, he is solid. He has done a lot for the game and a lot for a lot of players/friends. I am proud to call him a very close personal friend, even though he gives no props on how he got back into the game… LOL. Good luck to you and the ASP Family.
