USSSA Playing History

USSSA Major Player

2015 Interview

What positions do you play and what is your best position?
3rd, 2nd, 1st. Things just got real if I move to the outfield. I'd say 1st is my best position because I put the foot work & picking in, in college.

Who is the best softball player you have ever seen play?
I haven't been around long but I am very impressed with Wegman. The way he gets to balls in the outfield and also has the ability to hit for power & average.

Why do you like the game of softball?
It's a way for me challenge myself week in and week out with some of the best athletes around

Who is the best up and coming player in softball and why?
Can never NOT bring up Billy Maggard. He is the definition of ++power. Colby Hughes plays the game the right way & always has a positive mindset.

What is your nickname in softball and how did you get it?
"Youngin." The 1st year I was with BWW, our tight knit group of guys let me know that most of them were old enough to be my dad. Hopefully KP sticks now.

What is your height and weight?
6'3 240

Where do you call home?
Shreveport, Louisiana

What do you do for a living?
Director & Hitting Instructor at an indoor hitting facility. Soon to be certified in strength training &/or personal training as well

Did you play sports in High School / College / Pro?
Baseball, football, basketball in high school. Played college baseball at LSUS for 4 years and thankful enough to earn an All-American & Rawlings Gold Glove while I was there.

How did you get your start in softball and how did you get to the upper level?
I graduated college and started playing independent baseball in Fort Worth, Texas. I got released on a Saturday. The next day on the way home I got a call from my boy Justin Stuart; needless to say a week later I was playing with BWW in the Busch Pepsi Classic. Won the home run derby on Friday night while going 30-33. The softball looked like a beach ball compared to a baseball at the time

What was the most surprising difference between Conference play and non-Conference play when you made the jump?
During college I played some D ball tournaments at Mansfield BLD and never knew there was a Conference. It really opened my eyes in conference when went from playing baseball one weekend, Busch Pepsi Classic the next, and my very first Smoky Mountain tourney the week after…playing against the Scene and GTL. I was hooked then

Is there a player that you would compare your game to?
Not saying I am anywhere near his caliber but Kevin Filby. He has the ability to blow it out every at bat but choses to pick his holes and continue to use his hands exceptionally well.

What would you say is your career highlight to this point? Maybe one play or game that sticks out to you in particular?
As a team, my first year playing in the Conference, winning a B world ring!

In your career was there a single person (player/manager/coach) who had the most significant impact on your approach to the game? Why?
Justin Stuart, Billy Maggard, and Steven Gentry. It would be easy to hit a 3 run bomb with runners in scoring position, but to have a gap to gap on a line approach, allowing the guy behind you to hit the bomb tends to always work out in the teams favor.

What advice can you give a young player trying to break into the upper level?
Play the bigger tournaments, the NIT's; anywhere you can be seen by experienced players. Always best to introduce yourself and pick their mind a bit

What type of batting grip do you use and what ounce bat?
1 pinky off, 1 pinky overlap. 28 oz

What do you do in the offseason to prepare for the next softball season?
Follow work out plans I write up, bp (inside because it's cold outside), and throw

Do you have any superstitions and if so, what are they?
I like to wear my roping gloves when I hit because they feel best on my hands in 100 degree heat or 20 degrees freezing. Gives me the best feel on the bat

What is your favorite non-World tournament and why?
Winter world in Mansfield Tx & the Tripp Roth tourney in Baton Rouge because all my local friends get to see me play and I get to hang out with them while they play.

What is the best softball field/complex you have played at and why?
Wide World of Sports @ Disney. I love the atmosphere and can't beat the competition

Where is the best place to eat on the road after a game?
Outback on a Friday or Saturday night tends to be our choice of restaurants

What is the funniest thing you have ever seen on a softball field?
I've seen Colby Hughes hit into a triple play at the Smoky, with unlimited hr's. Either that or watching Billy Maggard tag from base to base thinking he's fast
