2013 Interview

Why do you like the game of softball?
It was a great carry over from baseball. It allows me to compete at a competitive level and know that the guys I am playing against and with want to win just as much as I do.

Who is the best softball player you have ever seen play? This is hard to answer because there is so many guys that play particular positions very well. Purcell is the best pitcher I have ever seen. Jeff Hall is probably the hardest hitter I have seen, but as far as all around player I would have to say Bryson Baker. Baker can put the ball wherever he wants and also can play multiple positions at an amazing level!

Who is the best up and coming player in softball and why?
Up and coming but possibly a familiar name in conference is Nick Weimer. His bat speed is unreal and plays good defense. Also has a great arm in the outfield. At the lower level up and coming I would say Dylan Hale. That kid just makes it look easy.

What is your nickname in softball?
Gooch, use your imagination for that one!

What is your height and weight?
6'4" 230lbs

Where do you call home?
Columbus, Indiana

What's your favorite way to spend an off weekend?
Spending time with the family or playing in local fun softball tournaments.

What do you do for a living?
I am a Technician for the Full System Durability Mast at Faurecia.

Did you play sports in High School / College / Pro?
Played highschool baseball and basketball

How did you get your start in softball and how did you get to the upper level?
Started playing league with my dads work sponsored team and got asked to play in a Friday night round robin. Started playing travel ball the following year with a bunch of younger guys and just kept moving up and progressing every year after that.

What was the best advice you were ever given?
Best advice for sports:
"shake that, get your head, lets go!! Redeem yourself!!"-Jerry Schoen(high school baseball coach) if something doesn't go as planned look for the next opportunity to change it.

What advice can you give a young player trying to break into the upper level?
Work at it! Nobody gets to the top without putting in the time and effort. Set goals to get better constantly.

What positions do you play and what is your best position?
I play any outfield position, but have played centerfield for the last 4 years.

What batting grip do you use?
Standard baseball grip

What ounce bat do you use?
27oz balanced

What do you do in the offseason to prepare for the next softball season?
Lift hard, especially legs. I try to get swings in as much as possible too. I play a lot of competitive volleyball to keep my arm and shoulder conditioned year round for throwing hard in the outfield.

What is your favorite sports team?
Cincinnati Reds, Kentucky men's basketball, Miami Heat

What is your favorite sport other than softball?
That's a close tie between basketball and volleyball.

Do you have any superstitions and if so, what are they?
Never step on a foul line. ALWAYS shake hands with the other team after a game no matter what has been said. And whatever you do before a game you win keep doing that same thing every game until you lose, don't change it if its working!

What is your most memorable softball moment?
2011 Columbus, IN major we played Resmondo on Friday night. I was the third batter and got a reality check when I stepped in the box. Purcell pitches me a pearl! I start loading up getting ready to unleash and the pitch moves in about 4 inches! It was everything I had to throw the hands and keep from swinging and missing. I flew out, but was one of the nastiest pitches I've ever seen. It also gave me a good look at what playing Conference caliber teams was all about. I gained a new respect that day. Another memory being a softball fan was just recently being in a Homerun Derby in the final round against Brett Helmer while Wegman is pitching to us. I was pumped to say the least.

What would be your "at bat" music selection?
Well Cy picked a pretty good one for the HR Derby with
"Cuts like a knife" lol. If I had to choose I like Korn Featuring Skillex

What is the best improvement upper level softball could make?
I don't think I would change much of anything.

What is your favorite non-World tournament?
Columbus Major (Indiana)

What is the best softball field you have played at and why?
I would have to say Columbus Indiana Lincoln Park fields are pretty awesome. I like the grass and the field setup.

Where is the best place to eat on the road after a game?
Steak and Shake

What is the funniest thing you have ever seen on a softball field?
The other night in league ball a guy burnt one of our outfielders. He rounded first and almost touched the grass he rounded so far. As he touched second his hat started to fall off when he tried to hold on to it his pants started to fall down. He ate dirt with his pants around his knees about half way to third base. He tried to get up and fell again and then by that time was thrown out at third. I laughed for a few innings after that.
