2012 interview

Why do you like the game of softball?
Competition mostly.  You get to put yourself up against players from all over the US and Canada and test your skills against the various players.  This is the one factor that pushes me to be better at what I do.  Softball also allows you to make new friends, see old friends, and travel.

Who is the best softball player you have ever seen play?
Rick Baker

What is your nickname in softball?
The Big Indian

Where do you call home?
Ardmore,Ok

What do you do for a living?
High School Coach

Did you play sports in High School / College / Pro?
Played Baseball and basektball in High School.  I was drafted by the Seattle Mariners my senior in high school.  After playing baseball in college for one year, I signed a contract and played several years in the minor league.

How did you get your start in softball and how did you get to the upper level?
Played with my older brothers when I was home from baseball.  After playing with a few different teams and meeting people within the softball communtiy, I began to move up.

What position do you play?
First base

What batting grip do you use?
I just hang my little finger off the knob.

What ounce bat do you use?
28oz

What do you do in the offseason to prepare for the next softball season?
Yoga…. haha

What is your favorite sports team?
Dallas Cowboys

What is your favorite sport other than softball?
I like to watch baseball, football, and basketball.  My Favorite would have to be baseball.

Do you have any superstitions and if so, what are they?
No superstitions.  Those are for weirdos.  just kidding.

What is your most memorable softball moment?
The time I hit a monsterous homerun at the Smokey Mountain Classic.  The ball went over the tennis courts in right field and then through the top of a group of trees.  In the same inning as the homerun, our US Vinyl team, set a Smokey Mountain Classic record for most runs scored in an inning.

Is slowpitch softball a sport or a game?
Both.  It's a game because there are two teams competing against each other to be the winner.  It's a sport because it takes athletic ability and knowledge to have a competitive edge.  Just like with any sport, there is always someone ready to take your place.  So you have to practice to perfect your individual abilities and train to be able to be consistent, if not to become better.

What is the best improvement upper level softball could make?
I'm not one to be political, it's just not me.  I play because I like the sport and I like how it brings friends together from all over the US.

What is your favorite non-World tournament?
The Snowball in Denison,Texas.  It's always freezing or rainy or both.  Everyone complains about how cold they are and how you could be playing at any hour of the night, but we are there every year.  It's not easy to play when your cold and tired, kinda tests your abilitites of endurance for sure. Sounds terrible, but it really is a lot of fun.  Since the tournament has been going on for 20+ years, familiar faces always attend and your able to see old friends.

What is the funniest thing you have ever seen on a softball field?
We were in Louisiana and my brother jumped at the fence to rob a guy of a homerun.  The ball went over and he was so mad that he missed it that he turned and kicked the fence and, like that wasn't enough, he proceeded to throw his glove at the fence . Instead, the glove cleared the 8ft fence and landed on the other side.  My brother was just standing there cursing at the fence, as if the fence did it all.  We had to call timeout for him and wait until somebody went after the glove and give it to him so we could contiue the game.
