2017 Free Agent Jordan Poole
Interview conducted on 9/8/2016
Who are you playing with in 2017?
2017 Free Agent – email@example.com
What positions do you play and what is your best position?
3rd and 1st. 1st being the best.
Who is the best softball player you have ever seen play?
Tough question. I value offense drastically more than defense, so, Connell and Purcell are at the top right now.
Why do you like the game of softball?
Keeps my competitive edge going and I love the atmosphere.
Who is the best up and coming player in softball and why?
Another tough one, if you mean "young" then Andrew Collins has to top the list, but also guys like Brett "Breezy" Rettenmeier and Matt Schrage are also guys to look out for.
What is your nickname in softball and how did you get it?
JP. Self explanatory.
What is your height and weight?
Where do you call home?
Des Moines, Iowa
What's your favorite way to spend an off weekend?
If I'm not at the field I'm either with my family or with my girlfriends family on the river.
What do you do for a living?
Quality Director for a hospital.
Did you play sports in High School / College / Pro?
Yes. Baseball, basketball, and football all they way through high school. Tried the baseball gig in college and realized education needed to be my first priority.
How did you get your start in softball and how did you get to the upper level?
Actually pretty lucky, I'm originally from Burlington, Iowa and a man by the name of Rob Humphrey lives there. Most know Rob from his long time coaching stint with R&M Metals. He saw me play and asked if I would play league with his team. I said yes, got around the right guys and just starting hitting 4-5 days a week. I owe a huge thanks to guys like Rob, Mike Kerr, Shaun Buetner, and Jeremy "Pup" Whaley.
What was the most surprising difference between Conference play and non-Conference play when you made the jump?
I have never played conference, hoping to get a shot. But, if this also correlates with upper vs lower, then my answer would be consistency and defense. No dead spots on lineups at upper level ball and everyone can glove it.
Is there a player that you would compare your game to?
There isn't. I play the game as I see fit. Hustle, heart, and smart is my motto.
What would you say is your career highlight to this point? Maybe one play or game that sticks out to you in particular?
USSSA D World's in 2015. We finished top 12 as a bunch of 25 year olds just trying to break into the game.
In your career was there a single person (player/manager/coach) who had the most significant impact on your approach to the game? Why?
I would say 2 people stick out. For just general softball knowledge it would be Rob Humphrey. He just knows so much about the game and has shared his knowledge with me. As for my approach, Shaun Beutner. He was my hitting partner up until last year and he has taught my so much about how the game is played on the offensive end. Two strike hitting, where to hit with 0 outs and guys on, and so much more. I'm definitely thankful that these guys have shared wisdom on the game with me.
What advice can you give a young player trying to break into the upper level?
Play smart. Play hard. The rest will take care of itself.
What type of batting grip do you use and what ounce bat?
One finger overlap and pinky off the bottom. 26-27.
What do you do in the offseason to prepare for the next softball season?
Workout and hit.
What is your favorite sports team and your favorite sport other than softball?
Miami Dolphins and Washington Capitals.
Do you have any superstitions and if so, what are they?
I always write my number (13) and my grandpa's number (9) some where on the field at every game.
What would be your "at bat" music selection?
The Dirt Whispered, Rise Against.
What is the best improvement upper level softball could make?
Ball improvement for safety.
What is the best softball field/complex you have played at and why?
Disney Wide World of Sports. OKC HOF is legit too.
Where is the best place to eat on the road after a game?
Anywhere the team can all hang out.
Tell us something about you that most would never know about you?
I have a master's degree in Healthcare Administration.
What was your favorite sports related gift you have ever given or received?
My very first Wilson A2000.
