ASA Playing History

Who are you playing with in 2013?
 Haven't decided yet.  jebbieking@hotmail.com

Why do you like the game of softball?
I like the fierce competition of the game, the comraderie of the players, the many people that you meet, and the travel (I've played in 35 states).

Who is the best softball player you have ever seen play?
Dennis Rulli – It takes a lot to impress me, but Dennis Rulli has probably been the best I've seen even though we have clashed some on the field.  He plays the game like I play it – he does what it takes to win, hits with power, base hits to all fields, and plays great defense.

Who is the best up and coming player in softball and why?
Steve Whaley – I first saw this kid when we played together in 2006.  He's come a long way in the game since then and continues to excel at this level.

What is your nickname in softball?
Lalauncher – which means Louisiana Launcher

What is your height and weight?
 6' 1" and 195 lbs.

Where do you call home?
Shreveport, Louisiana – where I've lived my whole life

What's your favorite way to spend an off weekend?
I enjoy road bicycling and compete in races and rides.

What do you do for a living?
I am a car hauler and work for a company that transports new cars and trucks to dealerships.

Did you play sports in High School / College / Pro?
Yes, I played baseball and basketball in high school.  I never played football because my mother wouldn't let me.

How did you get your start in softball and how did you get to the upper level?
I started playing in leagues with high school buddies.  In 1998, I got noticed by Dennis Chumley, the sponsor of an A team, Advanced Medical of Texarkana, and he asked if I wanted to play on his team.

What was the most surprising difference between Conference play and non-Conference play when you made the jump?
All the players are close to equal ability, and it's a lot more professional.  To me, it changed from being a game to a sport.

What was the best advice you were ever given?
Some of my softball mentors said I had the skills and the chance to play upper level softball, so they said go do it, and do it for as long as you can.

What advice can you give a young player trying to break into the upper level?
I tell all the young players that I believe have the potential to play in the upper level, to play in tournaments where they will be seen by upper level sponsors, coaches, and players.

What positions do you play and what is your best position?
I play SS, MI, and 2nd.  My best position is probably MI because it comes natural to me to be around the bag at 2nd and turn a double play well.

What batting grip do you use?
Bottom hand pinky finger over the knob

What ounce bat do you use?
 26 oz.

What do you do in the offseason to prepare for the next softball season?
 Bicycling and weight training

What is your favorite sports team?
 Los Angeles Angels

What is your favorite sport other than softball?
 Baseball

Do you have any superstitions and if so, what are they?
Never take batting practice on Thursday

What is your most memorable softball moment?
Going 5 for 5 in my first game of my first USSSA Major World Series, then going 1 for 17 the rest of the tournament and ending up 6 for 22.

What would be your "at bat" music selection?
Where Eagles Dare by Iron Maiden

What is the best improvement upper level softball could make?
Floating rubber so the pitcher has a better chance to make plays and not get hurt.

What is your favorite non-World tournament?
The Dudley in Minneapolis, MN, because of the atmosphere and the fan turn-out.

What is the best softball field you have played at and why?
The ASA Hall of Fame stadium in Oklahoma City because the field maintenance is superb.

Where is the best place to eat on the road after a game?
Anywhere with a big thick steak

What is the funniest thing you have ever seen on a softball field?
One time when I was batting a few years back, the pitcher started shaking out of control like he was having convulsions.  I didn't know what to do, then he pitched the ball, and I got a hit.  After I got to first, I asked him if he was OK.  He said yeah, that was just my seizure pitch.  I thought it was pretty funny.
