2011 Interview

Why do you like the game of softball?
I enjoy this game because it’s the closest to my favorite sport of baseball.   I would say I enjoy playing softball at a higher level because I’m addicted to competing and I enjoy watching so many talented players play the game.

Who is the best softball player you have ever seen play?
There are so many that can be named, but defensively, I’ve been most impressed with Matt Pesso.   Offensively, Greg Connell, Brett Helmer, Bryson Baker, Donovan Pokraka, John Bailey to name a few

What position do you play?
First, Catcher, EH

Where do you call home?
San Diego, CA

What do you do for a living?
I'm a freelance web designer/online marketing consultant and I own a Cocktail Lounge

Did you play sports in High School / College / Pro?
I played High School football

How did you get your start in softball and how did you get to the upper level?
I started as an NSA Site Director in San Diego in 1997.  I played on several C teams throughout Southern California and eventually got the opportunity to play up with Jimmy Torres.

What batting grip do you use?
I palm the knob and overlap one finger over

What is your favorite sports team?
My poor San Diego Padres

What is your favorite sport other than softball?
Fishing, Baseball, Golf, and Football

Do you have any superstitions and if so, what are they?
Superstitious?   I have Tourette Syndrome so I’m full of compulsive type behavior.   There would be too many to name.   If you watch closely you'll notice.

What is your most memorable softball moment?
My most memorable softball moment was persevering as a team with AJS against Dessert Falls at the 2010 USSSA B World Series for a come-back win to make the championship game.   And of course becoming the 2010 USSSA B World Champions.

Is slowpitch softball a sport or a game?
It’s obviously both, A sport is defined as organized, competitive, entertaining, and skillful activity requiring commitment, strategy, and fair play.   Sounds like a game to me as well.

What is the best improvement upper level softball could make?
I think the biggest improvement “Major” softball could make would be restricting the amount of Major rated players on a team.   As a result I could foresee the program benefiting competitively with more teams.
