Who are you playing with in 2012?
 New team – SBS jgoetz1510@comcast.net

Why do you like the game of softball?
I like the game of softball because the game provides a competitive outlet for men and women, of all skill levels, to play and compete in the appropriate arena.  The game at the conference level pools all the amazing talent from across the country to compete in events and determine who is on top.  This game at that level is the only thing I have played or competed in that provides any similarity to my professional Baseball playing days.  The brotherhood that is achieved in coming together for a common goal in this game is incredible.  I love all aspects of the game and can’t pin one or two things individually that makes me like the game, but if I had to pick one thing.. .it is the competition level and amazing talent and challenge that comes in from across the country to battle for the weekends top prize.

Who is the best softball player you have ever seen play?
The best softball player I have ever seen is Rusty Bumgardner.  You can start with the magnitude of the man, 6’5 285… Then you can gather all of his accomplishments; all world more times than I can count, MVP of this or that, world title after title, and being a Hall of Famer.  Which if you look at those alone my answer would seem self explanatory, but until you have shared a field with the man or watched him play you will never fully understand why he is the greatest of all time.  His approach to the game is nothing less than 100%.  He is a true competitor, and works to be on top.  For a man or athlete to have accomplished this much in his life in a game we all play for fun, he is humble in his approach to those of us who desire his position, he is a voice on the field heard by all.  He goes line to line better than almost any leadoff hitter I have played against and has power that is unmatched.  To me… this is a “no doubter!”

What is your nickname in softball?
I don’t have a nickname that I know of..  Haven’t ever had one I don’t think..

Where do you call home?
Bonney Lake, Washington

What do you do for a living?
I am a Commercial Real Estate Manager.

Did you play sports in High School / College / Pro?
I played Baseball professionally for the Minnesota Twins organization in FT. Meyers, FL.  And overseas in Japan.

How did you get your start in softball and how did you get to the upper level?
I began playing softball the summer after I returned from playing minor league Baseball.  My friends asked me to play in a rec league close to home.  I played a few times and found it fun.  I decided it would be fun to play something more competitive so I found a team locally to play D ball with.  From there I moved up to C playing with another local team.  My daughter was born three years ago and decided I should take some time away from playing and focus on my family.  As she grew I still had the urge to play and decided I could get back into it.  Jumped in with NuRay Metals last year playing C again and had an amazing time.  That was the first time I had seen the Major World Series or even heard of it to be honest.  It hit me then that I wanted that!!  I wanted to play at the top.  I began working on my game like I was prepping for spring training again… I got the opportunity to play with NW Combat in OKC for the ASA A world title last October and in 2011 I played for Doerflinger/TSC/Combat in the conference and Major World Series.

What position do you play?
I have been a middle guy my whole life.  SS/Middle.  In 2011 I played third base, First base, LF, RF, second base…  I will play wherever is needed for my team, if I had to pick one it would be left side of the infield and First base.

What batting grip do you use?
I hit with a traditional Baseball grip, but I wrap the bottom two fingers of my bottom hand off the bat around the knob.

What do you do in the offseason to prepare for softball?
I never stop training.  Gym 3-5 times a week.  Hitting 2-4 times a week.  Defense/footwork 2-4 times a week.

What is your favorite sports team?
My favorite sports team is the NY Yankees.  That many championships… something has to be right.

What is your favorite sport other than softball?
Baseball!

Do you have any superstitions and if so, what are they?
I think almost every athlete has some superstitions… I have too many to share I think.  The biggest superstition I have is that I have to put on my right batting glove first, don’t ask me why.  I also have to Velcro the right glove twice before I hit.  Crazy the things we do.

What is your most memorable softball moment?
My most memorable softball moment was seeing my name and picture on the jumbo screen at the major world series.  Later to be topped by hitting one out in the stadium.  I wanted to run the bags..LOL  my team said.. act like you have done it before… I said I haven’t and couldn’t stop smiling like a little kid hitting his first homerun…embarrassing I know!

Is slowpitch softball a sport or a game?
I think softball is a sport.  I mean it’s on Sports Center for Christ sake..  Rulli making top 10 plays..  IT’S A SPORT!

What is your favorite non-World tournament?
Sin City Classic

What is the funniest thing you have ever seen on a softball field?
Myself swinging and missing trying to go backside….
