New Team —> Tailgaters shortstop Jamie Simpson
Interview conducted on 11/5/2015
Who are you playing with in 2016?
Played 2015 with P&P333.
What positions do you play and what is your best position?
I play SS, 3B, OF.
Who is the best softball player you have ever seen play?
I haven't been around to long, so that's a tough question to answer. Anyone playing at a Major is pretty solid to me.
Why do you like the game of softball?
It's a great alternative to baseball. Allows me to play a game that I enjoy and build great relationships with new people.
Who is the best up and coming player in softball and why?
Not sure if I should be modest here or answer myself, lol. I'd say anyone who plays the game the right way. Hustling, hitting backside, throwing to cutoffs, etc.
What is your nickname in softball and how did you get it?
Don't have one yet. Just go by Jamie.
What is your height and weight?
Where do you call home?
Originally from Michigan, but I currently reside in South Bend, IN. (Go Blue!)
What's your favorite way to spend an off weekend?
Either playing ball or hanging out with friends and family.
What do you do for a living?
I'm an account executive for a marketing firm.
Did you play sports in High School / College / Pro?
Played football, basketball, and baseball in high school.
Played football and baseball in college at Eastern and Western Michigan.
Was drafted for baseball out of high school by the Phillies.
How did you get your start in softball and how did you get to the upper level?
Started with StreetKids in 2015 and did well. Was asked to play with P&P333 for 2016 and did well. We finished 4th in C worlds this year.
What was the most surprising difference between Conference play and non-Conference play when you made the jump?
The consistency of hitters and the defensive positioning.
Is there a player that you would compare your game to?
I like to think that every player contributes to the team in his own way. Not sure I've seen anyone my size able to run and hit like me, while being able to play SS.
What would you say is your career highlight to this point? Maybe one play or game that sticks out to you in particular?
Placing 4th at C worlds this year.
In your career was there a single person (player/manager/coach) who had the most significant impact on your approach to the game? Why?
I'd have to say all my teammates. Everyday you should strive to learn something new. Maybe learn different thoughts on specific scenarios that happen throughout the game. I think the thing that is lost, is that you must be sound mentally in order to play to your fullest potential.
What advice can you give a young player trying to break into the upper level?
I'm not sure. I'm still trying to do that myself. Just play in as many Majors as possible and hustle.
What type of batting grip do you use and what ounce bat?
Standard grip with pinky drop. Typically I use a 27 or 28oz.
What do you do in the offseason to prepare for the next softball season?
I workout quite a bit and take as much BP as I can.
What is your favorite sports team and your favorite sport other than softball?
Detroit over everything 🙂
Do you have any superstitions and if so, what are they?
What would be your "at bat" music selection?
Fetty Wap "679".
What is the best improvement upper level softball could make?
Maybe having a huge tournament for young players looking to move up. It would allow the big teams to see some younger talent that they may be interested in pursuing.
What is your favorite non-World tournament and why?
Probably a backyard tourney. It's fun playing with friends and in front of family.
What is the best softball field/complex you have played at and why?
Anywhere with turf infields.
Where is the best place to eat on the road after a game?
I'm usually fine with anything. Not too picky.
What is the funniest thing you have ever seen on a softball field?
Probably someone getting sniped while running bases or someone taking a huge whiff on a swing and missing.
Tell us something about you that most would never know about you?
I'm pretty laid back, but once on the field my competitive energy comes out.
What was your favorite sports related gift you have ever given or received?
Blessed to get a full ride for sports in college and be debt free!
