2012 Interview

Who are you playing with/ managing/sponsoring in 2012?
I am playing with Major League Dynasty/D2E/Worth/Sports55. We are coached by Donnie Munford who has been around for years and has an abundance of knowledge in the game. We are sponsored by Down2Earth, The Drain Doctor,Sports55, Worth.

Why do you like the game of softball?
It is a great way to keep the competitive juices flowing as well as the friendships you make will last a lifetime.

Who is the best softball player you have ever seen?
Brett Helmer, hits the ball harder than anyone I have seen.
Jason Kendrick – Gives it everything he has on the field and still hits as good as anyone.

Where do you call home?
Marietta, GA

What do you do for a living?
Real Estate Appraiser

What is your softball background as a player?
Played Baseball & Football my entire life, then started out playing locally after college, then started playing in bigger tournaments and have continued to try and impove myself and my game each and every year.  Our team has tried to improve and play in the best tournaments possible each year in our class.  With assistance from such great people like Drew Dubberly from Down2Earth Sports, we have decided to take it to the next level this season and join the conference.

What is your teams goal for 2012?
To establish ourself as one of the top new up and coming teams in the Conference and make a run at the "C" Worlds.

Where do you look for talent?
At the various tournaments we travel to, we are always looking for players that may fit in to our squad, especially the ones that know one knows about and have slipped below the radar..  Ability is definitely important, but The most important thing is that they fit in with our team and our goals as we are not interested in individuals, only true "TEAM" players who are loyal to our Team.

What is your favorite sports team?
Georgia Bulldogs & Atlanta Falcons

Do you have any superstitions and if so, what are they?
Tape my bats the same way and same direction everytime.

What is your most memorable softball moment?
Winning the ASA Worlds in Oklahoma City in 2010.  They definitely know how to treat the teams there and the facilities were great.

What is the best improvement upper level softball could make to bring in more sponsors?
Make slowpitch softball an Olympic Sport (Or at least a National Sport like Fast Pitch) for Both Men and Womens and then go after the larger corporate sponsors.  Do more events like the battle of the Border as well .

Who are some of the top Sponsors in Softball?
Definitely Down2Earth Sports.  Drew started a business from the ground up and in a very short time is now one of if not the most recognized sporting goods suppliers in Slow Pitch Softball.

What is your favorite non-World tournament?
The Mullet and the D2E Worth/Pepsi Classic.

Is the game better or worse with home run limits and why?
Definitely better, but local directors could do a much better job in sanctioning their teams as their are a lot more Teams and Players out there that could play anywhere from "C" to higher but try to "Beat The System" and stay down in the lower classes.  I was always taught you want to set your goals as high as you possibly can.  This is why they have Professional Sports so the "ELITE " athletes can move up the ladder and strive to one day be a professional, but is seems that there are alot of players that look to play as low as possible.  As teams improve, if they would continue to move up , then the Upper programs wouldn't suffer so much as they have been the past few years.

Who was the best team in softball history?
Steeles Hitmen !!

What is the funniest thing you have ever seen on a softball field?
Have seen alot of funny things both on an off the field, but most of them can't be posted in a public forum…. I think the show Jack Ass must have followed a softball Team around at some point because there are things I have seen in softball that would make those guys look tame.

In honor and memory of Greg Millsaps #22:
Philippians 3:20- “But our citizenship is in heaven. And we eagerly await a Savior from there, the Lord Jesus Christ.”
Last night I laid in bed crying and laughing. How is that even possible? My heart hurt so much from the loss of my friend. However, I found myself laughing at all the great times we shared. Times when he had to order fast food in the drive thru because his head was stuck out the window, to wrestling in mud pits on softball fields. There are so many happy memories that I cannot list them all. Greg Millsaps was a dear friend to me. We had more fun together then anyone ever should have. Our jokes always went too far, and we would look back and say “How did we pull that off?” I have had the privilege of traveling the United States with Greg. We talked every day, and we would have lunch at least once a week.

I find myself questioning life, and what it all means. Worst of all, I find myself asking God “why?”. Someone once told me to never ask God “why?” because He is in control and we don’t question God. However, the Bible says in Mark 15:34 Jesus cried out with a loud voice saying “my God, my God, WHY have you forsaken me?” Why does God allow such hurt? I’m not sure to be honest. But I do know that God loves us, and he hurts with us. There are many examples of pain and suffering in the Bible, but let’s look at Jesus on the cross. He asked God for a different way. Redemption with no nails. “Father, if you are willing, please take this cup of suffering away from me. Yes I want your will, not mine.’ Then an angel from heaven appeared and strengthened him” (Luke 22:42-43). Did God hear Jesus? Of course, God sent an angel. Did God still allow Jesus to suffer and die? Yes He did. He allowed the suffering for you and I, and Greg, that we may experience eternal life. A couple of years ago one of fellow teammates (Brandon) broke his ankle during a game. Greg immediately asked me to say a team prayer for Brandon. (I cry just thinking about this) Greg came to me afterward teary eyed and said thank you for a heartfelt prayer. I asked him what did he mean by that, and he said that he could not stand to see one of his brothers hurt, and sometimes we can only talk to Jesus about it. I remember that because that is the first and only time we talked about God, or Jesus. You see Greg, was a teddy bear, and had a heart for others that can only come from Jesus. My car broke down last year out of state, and Greg dropped what he was doing to come pick me up. You could ask him for anything and he would try his best to make it happen. He loved his daughter more than anything in the world, and that was evident to us all.
Though I am not perfect, God still loves me and sent his Son Jesus to die for me. He promises to prepare a place for me in heaven, and I accept that. The verse at the top of the page says that our citizenship is in heaven, and we are just waiting on our Savior to take us home. I am sure Greg is already trying to start a softball league in heaven and I know, without a doubt, I will see and play with him again. My question is, will you?
– Jeremy Holmes

I will never forget 9:24 pm on 11-14-13 when I got one of the worse calls of my life to let me know one of my best friends had passed in a car wreck. I was hoping it was some kind of sick joke but it wasn’t! Greg Millsaps has been like a brother to me the last 3 years and he always had my back and I always had his back! If you were his friend you had one of the most loyal friends you could ever have. I will cherish all our good times and never forget you my brother! I love you and look forward to seeing you on the other side one day!! Everyone please pray for his family especially his wife and daughter!! RIP Greg Millsaps #22

My heart is saddened today at the loss of a good man and even greater friend. It was always a pleasure stepping on the field aginst Greg to play a sport we all love. My most cherished memories of this sport was knowing sometime during the day we would cross paths on the same field and knowing I would have someone to joke with me before, during, and after the games just made it that more fun and special to me. My thoughts and prayers go out to his teammates. We lost a good man and even greater friend with a huge heart for all he came in contact with.

I mostly competed against Greg’s team over the past 9 years in GA. For a while, it seemed like we played them every weekend. I knew he was a great guy then, but really started to realize just how special of a person he was since becoming his friend over the last few years. He never had a bad thing to say about anyone, a great attitude, and one of the funniest men you could ever meet. You can tell a lot about a person by the friends he has, this is certainly true. Greg you will be truly missed by many, everyone you came in contact with. Praying for his family.

Greg was a great friend to me. He took the time to to take BP with me every week and always help me improve my game. Greg was like an older brother to me. Greg was honestly one of the main reasons GA Men’s Competitive Softball is where it is today. He set out to make it a players league. Not only did he play the game with us, but he kept it fun and exciting for all the teams. I am truly going miss him. RIP in peace Greg and love you man.

  36. Drew Dubberly says:

I can truely say Greg was one of my closest friends not just in this sport but in everyday life. We spoke nearly everyday on the phone or at least by text. I’ve stared at my phone all day looking at the last text he sent me. “Give me a call son, wanted to see how Shannon’s (my wife) surgery went”. That was yesterday morning, just hours before his death. I regret to say I never got to make that last call to him and that breaks my heart. He wasn’t just a softball player. He was a loving husband to Elaine his wife who he constantly spoke of to me and regarded as his real trophy in life as well as one of the best fathers to his daughter Madison I’ve ever known. I often looked up to him for that and tried to be more like him in that respect. He made me wanna be a better father. Mostly Greg was famous for his over the top pranks he pulled. They could be extreme but just know that if you were one of the lucky ones to ever be pranked by him, you were truely one of his friends! (We must have been REAL good friends!) You will be missed buddy. You are one of my heros and I’ll always love ya.

    • Dani Lori Collins says:

  41. Dwayne - Brother-in-Law says:

Greg is being missed so much today by Elaine, Madison, and the entire family! He was a great brother-in-law to me and my wife, and my two boys were absolutely in awe of him and couldn’t wait to get another batting lesson from their Uncle the “Softball King”. Glad to know you are in heaven with the real King! You were a great husband, father, and friend – have really enjoyed hearing so many funny stories today about the fun times you created with so many friends. Looking forward to seeing you again one day, Batman!

  42. I can hardly read all of these posts through my tears!!!! The pain is so unbearable! But thank you ALL for your sweet messages about my Big Teddy Bear! They have made me laugh, smile, cry and remind me what a great man I married 20 years ago! Madison and I are thankful for your thoughts and prayers and we will need them more over the days and weeks ahead! Don’t you know he is already organizing a softball league in Heaven? I will see you there one day, Baby! Keep watch over me and your little angel, Madison! WE LOVE YOU AND MISS YOU TERRIBLY!

    • Kelley Davis Speck says:

To Elaine & Madison, I knew Greg from high school. I am friends with Cindy Jinks, Gambo and many others you both know. I was blessed to play ball with Greg & spent alot a time at Al Bishop Park when he was there….he was quick with a Lil dig that made me stop & think, he was silly but had a sweet sweet soul. I agree that Greg is quickly organizing a Softball league in Heaven. In his honor I have changed the old saying that my Mom told me as a child, “God is bowling when you hear thunder”. Today, we are having a terrible weather in Chicago & they are telling people in our area to take shelter….My daughter is a little panicked with the loud thunder. I just told my 10 year old daughter that the thunder is an old friend named Greg taking batting practice with his new team in heaven. No words will help with what you are going thru but my family is sending you, Madison and your whole family prayers for strength in the weeks & months ahead. God Speed, Kelley Davis

  43. Jholmes says:

    Elaine,
We as a softball community love you and Madison just as much as we loved Greg. Anything you ever need please do not hesitate to ask. Greg did more for the softball community then we can ever repay.

  44. Trecia - Cousin says:

It is with a very heavy heart and lots of tears that I am attempting to type this.

I am so thankful that our family has always been so close. It gives me great peace to know that Greg is in Heaven rejoicing and celebrating with those who have gone before him. I contribute some of this peace to our Granny. It was important to her that we stay committed to Christ and I am so grateful that Greg followed in this way, especially at a time like this!

I remember the Sunday lunches at Granny and Granddaddy’s, when we were kids and all of the other times in between when Granny would babysit us. We really had some fun times until yes he would always pull a prank on me and of course I would run and tattle. Sorry for that Greg. Christmas was always another great time. I remember how you would dress up as Santa and Angie, Christy, and I would be your reindeer and we make our families laugh on Christmas Eve. I am thankful for these childhood memories.
I am also thankful for the friendship as adults we have had and Greg and Tim have formed through the years. Greg has been so good to help Jessica with improving her game of softball. From batting lessons to field advice he has truly helped her out. It was important to him that she gets a college scholarship and through all of the lessons he provided he would never take a dime it was just something he said he wanted to do. Thank you Greg, there’s not many people so willing to give of themselves for free just to help someone else out!!

I know you and Granddaddy are having a wonderful time in Heaven and Granny and your Granny Crabtree are doing nothing but doting over you, but you deserve it.

Elaine and Madison: Tim, I and Jessica are here for you in any way we can be. We love him and we miss him deeply!

  45. Bones says:

Greg was a great friend and an awesome teammate to me! He always made u laugh and smile when he was around! I will never forget my years playing ball with him and all our memories! When he asked me to play for him I was excited to be his teammate and be apart of the Carolina Dynasty! He would call me everyday when I played for him and talk softball and ask if I wanted to meet him for lunch! I will never forget when we won our first World in 2010 with Dynasty, he was so excited tears were coming down his face! Thoughts and prayers for Elaine, Madison and their family! They meant so much to him! Miss and Love you Booger!!!

  46. Matt Easterday says:

I thought by giving this a couple of days, I would be able to put my thoughts and words together for this post. The truth is, there are no words to describe what a great friend Greg Millsaps has been to me. I have had the ultimate privilege to take the field along side him with the Dynasty family for over 5 years. Notice I said “family”… Greg always treated the team and his friends like gold. There is nothing that this man wouldn’t do for the people he cared about. I sensed that from the first day I met him and we developed a really tight bond and friendship that I feel honored to have been a part of. Over the years, I have gotten to know Elaine and Madison as well. Greg absolutely adored his wife and daughter and that was evident when his face lit up as he talked about them. I have became a better person for have knowing Greg Millsaps. I will never forget all of the great memories! I miss you dearly buddy. Rest in peace #22.

  47. Bill Simms says:

Just after Greg was bourn and was brought home, Janis (who was friends with Charlene and later became my wife) and I went to see the happy Millsaps. This was 1966. Bill and I already knew each other, fooled with cars, double dated and saw each other a lot. This later allowed me to keep up with Greg and know about his accomplishments. After Greg was grown, I saw him at car shows and other happenings and he and his wife and daughter were always so friendly. I hope Bill and Charlene and all the rest of the family can keep their chin up and continue to look forward. Rest in peace Greg.

  48. Dylan Davidson #20 says:

Greg was a pleasure to talk to..I got to know him over the past years when we would play against each other..softball has lost a great person..prayers to the family and all the friends..I encourage anybody that doesn’t know The Lord Jesus Christ as their personal savior to do so now because we are not promised tomorrow..RIP Greg..God Bless

  49. Susan Farmer says:

Greg Millsaps was TRUELY a one of a kind person! He was loved and respected by so many! I just can’t believe it still! Booger was larger than life and will never be forgotten. Boogie and I send our love and prayers out to Elaine,Madison and the whole Millsaps family!! The years we were with Dynasty will be cherished and when you were Greg’s friend you could TRUELY say that you had a true friend! I carry a heavy heart for our buddy! Booger love you always never a goodbye just a see you later

  50. Aunt Beverly & Uncle Don-Bill's Sister says:

Even though Greg was a grown man, he never acted his adult age of 47. I’ve read all the wonderful stories from his friends, family and teammates and know that we are all privileged to have been the recipients of Greg’s love, friendship and of course, one of his many, many pranks. He was our Millsaps family “Mischief Maker” his entire life….there was never a dull moment around Greg! Some of you have probably been the receivers of his well-known prank of having “Happy Birthday” sung to you and dessert given while having dinner with him at a restaurant…Oh yes, it’s happened to his family members too. Greg was always full of adventure, fun, entertainment and imagination with anything he set out to accomplish. Greg was the oldest grandchild in the Millsaps family and was so special to all of us, especially my parents, his Granny and Granddaddy. At family gatherings, my Mom would always prepare one of his favorite dishes of hers, Macaroni and Cheese. Actually, she would make one whole pan of it just for Greg and another pan for the rest of our family. He loved it that much and he was that special to her. We’ve continued to do that through the years even though our Mom has pasted away just so Greg could have his favorite dish. Our Dad, Marvel Millsaps passed away in 2002, but he and Greg were very close and he attended many of Greg’s games as a lot of players will remember. Greg was an only child and his Dad and Mom idolized him (even if he made every day a challenge for them-but in a good way). He loved his family and would do anything for them and we all loved him equally. He was such an inspiration to our granddaughter, Jessica, the “other” outstanding softball player in our family. Lastly, I’ve been looking at family albums the past two days and found some really great pictures of Greg from the past and hope to share them with everyone at the service. One of those photos says it all….Greg was about 14 in the picture and it was taken in the summertime. He was wearing a tank shirt and shorts and it caught my eye after I closely read the saying on his shirt. Along with that usual mischief grin (always knowing he was up to something), the shirt reads: “Indulge in a little horseplay”. That was our Greg! I hope your memories of Greg will continue to put smiles on your faces whenever you think of him again. Thanks to all who have contributed to his life. Our family appreciates the outpouring of love, thoughts and prayers.

  51. JoAnna Benson says:

Greg was my stepbrother. His mother, Charlene, is married to my father. I have read all your posts here, I’ve been to the house to visit with Elaine and the family and I am so saddened at this loss. I am also terribly disappointed in myself that I never took the time to get to know Greg as I should have over the 16 years that our parents have been married. I read these posts and am thinking to myself that I missed an opportunity to know one heck of a man, husband, father, friend, ball player, and brother. A life lesson for me and I hope for others. We get busy as adults and don’t take the time to do things that are important. I had time, I didn’t make time. And time doesn’t stand still for anyone. Thank you all for sharing your stories. I have learned more about him in the last three days than I knew over the last 16 years. Condolences to you all on the loss of such a fine man that you shared life with so awesomely!

  52. Jessica #4 says:

First off I would just like say that I wouldn’t be the player I am today if it wasn’t for him. I’m 16 and I play fast pitch. Greg was my mom’s cousin and also my hitting instructor. He and I worked so well together and he totally changed my hitting for the better. Over the past few years he and I have formed a special bond. Did I always want to go hit with Greg? No. But I always went and I’m so happy I did. He was always picking on me for going back to my bad habits but by the time we were coming close to being finished for the day I was always hitting the way he wanted me to. He promised me I was going to hit one out this fall and sadly I didn’t but I came extremely close last weekend. I regret not being able to do that and call him to tell him but I know when I hit one out for the first time it will be for him. Every time I step onto the field I will have a new angel smiling down on me, cheering me on, and most of all someone new to play for. He kept telling me how he was gonna help me get a college scholarship and now I’m going to work so much harder to get there. Thank you Greg for everything you did for me. Your love of softball was amazing and I can’t explain how much that love influenced me. I love you so much. Hit hard up there cause I’ll always hit hard for you!

I was 12 when Greg was born so Greg has always been like a younger brother to me. He was my only nephew so I would tell him he was my favorite nephew to mess with him. He probably learned some of his tricks from me because I was always pulling them on him. It became a tradition every Christmas for us to play pool against each other at my sister house. The first thing we would say to each other was that we had not played since last year to cover up for our bad pool play. I think we both were lying. Greg was a wonderful man, husband & father & I had the pleasure of watching h;m grow up. My thoughts are with Elaine, Madison & the rest of my family. I will miss you Greg & miss our annual pool game. I loved you boy.

Met Greg when he was 5 years old. What a cute kid and full of “ideas”. His Mother, Charlene, gave so much of herself making sure he got what he needed to develop all his talents and obviously did a great job. Last year Charlene invited me to watch Madison cheerlead, she is so cute and small like Charlene and Elaine. I was so impressed when she came into the stands and sat on Greg’s lap. Teenagers don’t do that unless they have a very special daddy. I saw the love they had for each other. What a great dad!

  55. Jennifer Honea says:

I met Greg when I was about 23. I used to date someone that coached with him so I got to meet the funny jokester that he was. I don’t ever remember seeing Greg without a smile on his face. He was the happiest person I had ever met. I also got to work with him when he did appraisals for Premier Appraisals and I assisted him in pulling his comps. I was going to school to be an appraiser and he had not problem with trying to help me learn as much as I could so when I got out of school I would be ready to start appraising. He was always such a pleasure to be around. I have several times wondered how he was doing and when I got the call the other day about his tragic accident I was in shock. I still can not beleive that the world has to say “see you again” to some one who was such a great person. My thoughts and prayers are with his family at this time of need. The world won’t be the same without you! Rest in peace Greg!

  56. Angie (Greg's Cousin) says:

First, I want to say thank you to everyone who has posted a comment. As a family member who lives far away it has been very comforting to check this, feel connected and have a way to grieve this terrible loss. Your kind words, memories and thoughts mean more than you can realize. I have felt emotionally sick for days… I can’t imagine what Elaine, Madison and Uncle Bill must be feeling right now. My heart is breaking for you all. As a child, I remember sitting with Greg, Christy and Trecia at a card table for every Christmas, Easter and Thanksgiving. Sometimes Greg would put salt in Trecia’s tea when she got up and would tell us not to say anything, he was playing jokes back then, he always found the fun in life. I remember watching him play ball as a child and as an adult, going with Granddaddy to one of his games, Granddaddy was his #1 fan, he got so much joy from watching Greg. I am so thankful to know that Granddaddy was there to welcome him into heaven right after Jesus, with a big hug with those big hands of his. As an adult I can not remember a family funeral where Greg wasn’t there as a pallbearer carrying someone else. Now it’s time to carry his family in our prayers… To Elaine, Madison and Uncle Bill, we love you all so much. I am praying that you will feel God’s love and comfort and that He will carry you through this very difficult time as only He can.

Only New Greg A Little While; But It Did Not Take me Long To Know He Was A Good Guy.
I Am Sad To Hear Of This.God Bless Him And His Family.

  58. Maura says:

Greg was our awesome neighbor for a few years. My son was obsessed with motorcycles and would stop everything when Greg would come riding down the street on his “cool bike”. My son fondly called him “motorcycle man” for years. When we told Greg about this, he invited us all over and let my son stare, touch, sit on and even offered to take him for a ride on his motorcycle! Four years later, my son still remembers how kind and thoughtful Greg treated him. When we opened our insurance agency a little while later, Greg didn’t hesitate to get a quote and sign up right away, he was so supportive and will be missed by many!

  59. Aunt Judy says:

Our memories of Greg spanned forty seven years, so most of us cannot believe he is gone after just one week without him. He was the first grandchild of the Millsaps family and the first greatgrandchild of the Miller family. I remember dinners where Greg, Christy, Angie, and Trecia, as children, would stand in chairs helping Grannie with the dishes (no dishwashers in those days). There were Easter Egg Hunts where Greg would always find the most eggs. Yes, Greg always loved his macaroni and cheese, if you went through the line after him, there was no cheese left on the top. After growing up (if he ever did) Greg married Elaine in l993 and Madison was born in 1998. He cherished you both and you were his first priority. Later I remember Christmas days at the Nursing Home with Grannie where Greg would be in the big recliner and Madison was always in his lap, even as a teenager. The last time I saw Greg was as he and Madison were driving up at Bill,s house. He was giving Madison driving lessons. Yes, Madison he supported you in everything that you did. We all have hundreds of memories that we will cherish for the rest of our lives. Greg loved life, He loved his family, and he loved the Lord. Elaine and Madison, I am here for you. I know that Greg is with Granddaddy, Grannie, and my Gene and is Hitting the Ball out of the Heavenly Park.

  60. Rex Burch says:

We are all stunned by the sudden and untimely passing of Greg Millsaps. I have struggled every day emotionally thinking of Greg since hearing the news. Many of us who knew Greg well can say he was truly the best friend anyone could ever have. I will forever cherish the countless hours I have spent with him through the years. I have nothing but fond and happy memories of Greg always laughing, joking, and never taking life too seriously. His relentless antics and pranks kept all who knew him entertained and amused. He always lived his life “Full Throttle”, with a youthful passion, and appeared to enjoy every step of the way. He reminded us all that we are but little boys who still love to play. I am still in disbelief he has departed this world as he was such a huge part of my life for over 25 years. His spirit shall live forever in my heart. He will truly be passionately missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing him. May God comfort and always bless Elaine, Madison, and all Greg’s extended family. Farewell my brother and may you rest in peace and be called to the glory of God!

  61. David Lamb says:

I met Greg at Ga.Southern, back in mid 80’s. We often worked-out at the gym, together. I’m just now finding out, in December…loss for words. We lost touch over the years but would bump into each other, now and again. I saw him about a year ago. What a super-great guy and insatiable prankster. His pranks were never out of malice,it was his love for life! I feel honored to have known him. My heart goes out to Elaine,Madison and family.

  62. Jimmy Stearns says:

I met Greg in the 80’s at Coffees Gym. He invited me to play softball with him at Terrell Mill Park and I immediately found a friend. Greg’s gift for making me laugh has gone unmatched. Even now I try to mimic some of his pranks and antics. He lived his life to the fullest. I know Elaine, Madison and the family are grieving over such a tragic loss but they should take comfort in knowing his spirit will live on in the lives he touched.

  63. Jeff O'Neal says:

I live in Key West now but played softball with him years ago. I was looking up the Ga USSSA shedule reminiscing about the good old days. I saw the sencond annual Grag Milsaps memorial tournamnet. I was shocked to find out about his passing. My thoughts and prayers go out to family and friends. RIP 22
