Grant Grimmett

Grant Grimmett

USSSA Playing History

Interview conducted in 2014

What positions do you play and what is your best position?
Shortstop or Middle infield.

Who is the best softball player you have ever seen play?
There are a ton of very good players but my favorite hitters are Wegman and Kirby, defensively Bazat and Reyna are the best I've seen.

Why do you like the game of softball?
Its just a faster paced game of baseball and you get to become friends with competitive guys just like yourself.

Who is the best up and coming player in softball and why?
Stephen Lloyd…he doesn't make outs and he gloves it.

What is your height and weight?
6'3 205lbs

Where do you call home?
Davenport, Iowa

What's your favorite way to spend an off weekend?
Taking BP of course!

What do you do for a living?
Inspect trucks for lane closure jobs.

Did you play sports in High School / College / Pro?
Played college baseball until I broke my hand and gave it up.

How did you get your start in softball and how did you get to the upper level?
After I broke my hand and stopped playing baseball, I played league at the local complex and just hit homeruns until I saw the older guys hitting backside. Played a year with my friends, moved in with a couple of the guys from Rip City and played a year with them, now I know how to play the game and Im looking to get into the conference.

What was the most surprising difference between Conference play and non-Conference play when you made the jump?
I've only played one tournament but I've seen everyone before so there was no surprise except for how hard the balls are compared to ASA. You can hit these things a mile!

Is there a player that you would compare your game to?
The great defensive shortstops usually cant hit it 400ft. I think I have the skillset to be great on both sides, I just haven't gotten a chance to play in the conference until a month ago, but unfortunately my team folded. I'd like to think I'm like a less polished Stephen Lloyd.

What would you say is your career highlight to this point? Maybe one play or game that sticks out to you in particular?
I'm only 26 and I've only been playing for a few years but the Saturday night game at the Firemans in Minnesota last year was easily the coolest thing I've been a part of. Our defense was making diving plays and throwing guys out left and right and the crowd loved it!

In your career was there a single person (player/manager/coach) who had the most significant impact on your approach to the game? Why?
My guy Andy Shiltz, we lived together and all we did for a year and a half was talk softball or take bp all day everyday. Now its all that I ever want to do and has been for awhile now. Shannon Arnold and all of the Rip City guys have helped me more than they know, I watched everything these guys did for a whole year and tried to follow suit.

What advice can you give a young player trying to break into the upper level?
You just gotta keep playing, I'm still trying to break in to the TOP level myself and thats what Im gonna do until I get to impress the right people and a spot opens up on a team. Like all good things, it takes time so keep practicing hard like its game time.

What type of batting grip do you use and what ounce bat?
I drop my pinky and do a 2 finger overlap. Ive been using a 28oz but I broke it so now Im going with the 30oz.

What do you do in the offseason to prepare for the next softball season?
Saw how big all the top level guys are so I got in the gym this past winter and I go hit BP as often as possible.

What is your favorite sports team and your favorite sport other than softball?
The Baltimore Ravens, how can you not be a Ray Lewis/Ed Reed fan?!?!

Do you have any superstitions and if so, what are they?
No chance, prepare and you dont need to worry about any luck.

What would be your "at bat" music selection?
Believe Me – Lil Wayne and Drake

What is the best improvement upper level softball could make?
There are a million ASA could make, no need for me to get into that. Conference play is pretty legit except I think it should be 12 homeruns no matter who you're playing against. Major guys get to swing away 4 more times and I know personally the more I get to swing away, the better I am.

What is your favorite non-World tournament and why?
The Firemans, as I mentioned earlier, there is a crowd of drunk people that are really into the games. We went in there last year as the enemy, by the end of the tourney, we had the whole crowd cheering for us!!!

What is the best softball field/complex you have played at and why?
The Columbus Major this year, the turf infields make sure you get a true hop everytime. When you have 6'3 250lbs monsters turning and burning and hitting lasers at you, it definitely helps to know where the ball is gonna bounce to.

Where is the best place to eat on the road after a game?
Portillos up around Chicago, of course. They have cake shakes…shakes with a real piece of cake in them…youre welcome.

What is the funniest thing you have ever seen on a softball field?
I've been a part of a million funny moments already, but the ones freshest in my mind were last weekend I saw Andy Shiltz hit a BOMB while falling down, Nate Staats ALMOST falling twice in route to a double then sliding late into 2nd base. Anytime I see a huge man fall or stumble, it cracks me up.

What was your favorite sports related gift you have ever given or received?
NJCAA D-2 Rawlings Gold Glove my sophomore year of JuCo

Someone should give Grant a shot. As coach for Rip City I saw him make some sick defensive plays consistently in tough situations. And like he said, not many shortstops can also hit it 400 ft. If someone gives him a shot he won’t disappoint. Good luck G
