Why do you like the game of softball?
The competition and friends you make along the way.

Who is the best softball player you have ever seen play?
A lot of great players out there but since I'm a pitcher have to say Purcell.

Who is the best up and coming player in softball and why?
There are several talented players out there, especially here in NC.  DW/Softballcenter has benefited the game of softball and has given several up and coming players the opportunity to play in the conference.  I am sure I speak for all the players out there, we all appreciate everything he has done for the game.

Where do you call home?
Elizabeth City , North Carolina
(A lot of conference players here in NC, could have a real good A team)

What is your height and weight?
6’1”  220

What do you do for a living?
Middle School PE Teacher/Umpire

Did you play sports in High School / College / Pro?
Baseball, football, basketball in high school.  Played baseball at a small college in NC

How did you get your start in softball and how did you get to the upper level?
Played league and local tournaments first few years. Couple guys who helped me along the way were Stacy Mizelle and Al Pierce. Next couple years played B/C ball with some good teams from the area. In 2009 Taylormade picked me up halfway through the season, Brian Floyd asked a few weeks before the Dudley  if I would like to play and after that tournament I was hooked.  Played with them for 2 years then played with Turano and Midwest Swing in 2011.  This past season played for Down 2 Earth and won a B World.

What was the best advice you were ever given?
Play as much as you can and work hard at your game.

What position do you play?
Pitcher and 1st/3rd Base

What do you do in the offseason to prepare for the next softball season?
Spend countless hours taking bp and working out.  Couple of my friends and I hit almost everyday and during the winter pull out the old bats.  Anyone remember the Carl Rose and Supercell EST

What is your favorite sports team?
Dallas Cowboys and Chicago Cubs

What is your favorite sport other than softball?
Football

What is your most memorable softball moment?
Any chance I get to play on same team as my brother David Byrum, great player and fun guy to be around.  He was selected to the USSSA All Conference team this past season.  Best Moment-Winning the USSSA B World in 2012. Also beating Dan Smith in 2009 at the Smokys and beating GTL last year down at the Dual.  Playing in an All-Star Softball game last season at Harbor Park before a Norfolk Tides minor league baseball game was also a great experience.

Is slowpitch softball a sport or a game?
Use to think it was a game but after playing in the conference realized it’s a sport, least at that level.

What is the best improvement upper level softball could make?
After this past season, nothing needs to change. Just finished my 4th year in the conference and have to say it was the most competitive year of softball I’ve seen.

What is your favorite non-World tournament?
Dudley and Smokys

What is the funniest thing you have ever seen on a softball field?
Backwards hat, bat flipper, shaved bat, cut off sleeves “guy” in league who is 2 for his last 17 and gets a hit and does a pop up slide into second base and yells to the dugout “COME ON, HIT WITH ME”

Where is the best place to eat on the road after a game?
Winghouse in Kissimme
