Major Player

2014 Interview

What positions do you play and what is your best position?
I am an outfielder by trade! But I think I am best at catching and EH'ing!

Who is the best softball player you have ever seen play?
Brian Wegman is the best overall player in my opinion. The best hitter I have ever seen would have to be Chris Calcutt. Also, Lee Powers is pretty amazing to watch at the plate.

Why do you like the game of softball?
Keeps me competitive

Who is the best up and coming player in softball and why?
Brian Logan, Matty Crawford, Luis Reyna, Lee Powers (I don't think you can count him as up and coming anymore)

What is your nickname in softball and how did you get it?
Juice and CB

What is your height and weight?
5'11 230lbs

Where do you call home?
The RVA!! Richmond, VA

What's your favorite way to spend an off weekend?
I enjoy going and watching my brother play locally, hanging out with all the guys I never see anymore and enjoying a few Natural Lights. Also enjoy doing absolutely nothing and sitting on the couch. Not often I have a weekend with nothing at all to do.

What do you do for a living?
I'm a warehouse manager at Communications Specialists. A low voltage electrical contractor.

Did you play sports in High School / College / Pro?
I played one year of baseball and one year of football in high school.

How did you get your start in softball and how did you get to the upper level?
Started out as a pick up on a Friday night coed team. Was then asked to play in a mens league, then after one game was asked to play a tournament the next weekend. Started there and progressed through the ranks.

What was the most surprising difference between Conference play and non-Conference play when you made the jump?
Pitching… People can say oh its coming underhanded. Yeah true! But stand up there and let Purcell chuck knuckleballs at you and see how many legit base hits you can get. The speed of the game and defense is way different as well… I love the guys locally who hit .750 in their weekend tourney, then look up my stats and tell me I suck because I only hit .650 and we came in 5th!

Is there a player that you would compare your game to?
Honestly I can't think of one

What would you say is your career highlight to this point? Maybe one play or game that sticks out to you in particular?
Winning the USSSA A World Series last year… I've been close to a USSSA World a few times but never thought I would win one. It was a full team effort and we pulled out an amazing story book ending! Making the All-World team was a personal highlight for me.

In your career was there a single person (player/manager/coach) who had the most significant impact on your approach to the game? Why?
Chris Calcutt. I started as a 23 year old kid in the conference… Didn't know much about the game, but Chris taught me a lot on and off the field.

What advice can you give a young player trying to break into the upper level?
Be humble. Watch other respectable players and take notes.

What do you do in the offseason to prepare for the next softball season?
I lift weights all year round and try to take batting practice all year round as well.

What is your favorite sports team and your favorite sport other than softball?
Miami Dolphins, Notre Dame, Dallas Mavericks

Do you have any superstitions and if so, what are they?
Usually play with change in my pocket… As of last year I started putting my batting gloves on a certain way. I was on a hot streak so I didn't change things.

What would be your "at bat" music selection?
"Pretty good at drinkin beer" by Billy Currington

What is the best improvement upper level softball could make?
Player ratings on the local level to slowly move players up.

What is your favorite non-World tournament and why?
Anyone at home where I can play with my buddies and drink a few beers.

What is the best softball field/complex you have played at and why?
I enjoyed the field of dreams complexes in Palm Springs and Vegas

Where is the best place to eat on the road after a game?
Logans usually gets visited quite often.
