2016 Free Agent pitcher/IF Corey Miller

Corey Miller

USSSA Playing History

Interview conducted on 10/9/2015

Who are you playing with in 2016?
Looking for new opportunities in 2016.

2016 Free Agent –

What positions do you play and what is your best position?
I mainly pitch, but have played a lot of infield as well. I am really open to anything, INF/OF, but pitching is what I have mostly focused on.

Why do you like the game of softball?
It allows me to compete and play ball. It is fast moving and a lot of fun. If you aren't having fun, then you are doing something wrong.

What is your nickname in softball and how did you get it?
I don't really have one. No one has ever landed on something that has stuck. I usually am the one making up nicknames for other people.

What is your height and weight?
6'2 – 205

Where do you call home?
Phoenix, AZ

What's your favorite way to spend an off weekend?
I usually just hang out with my girlfriend/friends/teammates. Get some BP in when we can.. or do anything that sounds fun. Laser Tag, Bowling, Mini Golf.. you name it.

What do you do for a living?
IT Auditing and Consulting.

Did you play sports in High School / College / Pro?
I played baseball and basketball in high school, and played Club Baseball at ASU.

How did you get your start in softball and how did you get to the upper level?
I grew up around the fields watching my dad play. After playing with the club baseball team for a few years at ASU, and trying out a few adult league baseball games, I started playing a lot more league with my dad and found my way onto a USSSA team. The competition was great and I was immediately hooked. Haven't really touched a baseball since.

What was the most surprising difference between Conference play and non-Conference play when you made the jump?
The biggest thing I noticed this year playing in the few events I was able to play in, was the speed of the game, and the commitment. Every guy out there knows what they are doing, and expect the best out of themselves and everyone around them. They are there to win, and I love that. I also noticed the ability to hit to open holes based on pitch location is extremely important.

Is there a player that you would compare your game to?
Not that I know of. I would say anyone who wants to compete, win, and give it everything they have all the time. I really enjoy playing, and am super competitive. I expect the best from myself and my teammates. Some people think I can be a little too intense on the field. Off the field I am much more laid back and easy going.

What would you say is your career highlight to this point? Maybe one play or game that sticks out to you in particular?
3 years ago, I started a team with a group of my friends and it was the first year any of us really got into tournament ball, really softball in general. We went to E worlds in Vegas that year and took 3rd. I got to play with my pops and we both ended up making all tourny. Sharing memories like that with my dad was awesome.

In your career was there a single person (player/manager/coach) who had the most significant impact on your approach to the game? Why?
My Dad is hands down my number one role model. He plays hard, and always want to win. He taught me everything I learned growing up and those fundamental along with staying focused still help me today.

What advice can you give a young player trying to break into the upper level?
I am a young player looking for advice. Any advice you have for me, I am all ears. Only way to get better is to learn from those who have been there.

What do you do in the offseason to prepare for the next softball season?
The nice thing about Arizona is that there is never too much of an off season. I try to hit as much as possible and continue to play tournaments as much as I can.

What is your favorite sports team and your favorite sport other than softball?
I love basketball and love to watch football.

My favorite teams would be the Pittsburgh Pirates, Pittsburgh Penguins, Dallas Cowboys, and the PHX Suns.

Do you have any superstitions and if so, what are they?
I always have chapstick with me and use it before every at bat. Weird, I know, but I started doing it when I very first started playing and have never looked back.

What would be your "at bat" music selection?
I couldn't pick just one. That would probably change from week to week to be honest.

What is your favorite non-World tournament and why?
Toys For Tots in Cali is always exciting, and its great that it supports a good cause.

I also really enjoy the Whole Enchilada in Las Cruces. Crazy to see games start Friday afternoon and go non stop through Sunday.

What is the best softball field/complex you have played at and why?
Obviously playing at Disney is pretty awesome. Especially playing in the stadium which was a great experience.

I also enjoy playing at BLD in Vegas (as in infielder) due to the turf infields. Gotta love the smooth hops.

Tell us something about you that most would never know about you?
Coming out of high school, I was around 5'8 and weighed around 140 pounds. I didn't start growing until my Freshman and Sophomore year of college.
