Casey Alexander

USSSA Playing History

Interview conducted on 6/2016

Who are you playing with in 2017?
No one right now, finished up 2016 with B Class Slayer.

2017 Free Agent – Alexancl1@aol.com

What positions do you play and what is your best position?
Left and right field, 3B, 5 man, 2B, 1B, and Pitch but I mostly play 2B and pitch.

Who is the best softball player you have ever seen play?
Too many to list but I have to shout out a few that I have watched  and played with more than others.  Mattie Crawford, Bill Pinkham, Tyler Scott, Tony Boyd, Chad Emberton, Aaron Sandoval, Brian Zirkle, Filip Washington, Chris Greinert, (both) Kyle Pearson, LuLu, Greg Connell, Andy Purcell, Bubba Mack, Clayton Shaw, Travis Adams, Leon Bass, Josh Rakes, Joel Justice etc etc a lot of young local ballers in Tennessee and Virginia.

Why do you like the game of softball?
Softball is my escape from the real world and my place to go for competition.

Who is the best up and coming player in softball and why?
I would have to say Bill Pinkham the pitcher from the Scene, I'm pretty sure it was his first year playing conference and he did a bang up job.

What is your nickname in softball and how did you get it?
Honestly don't have one that I know of.

What is your height and weight?
5' 10" 210lbs

Where do you call home?
Virginia Beach, Virginia

What's your favorite way to spend an off weekend?
Definitely with the family going to Six Flags, waterfalls, Florida to the Beach anywhere to have some fun.

What do you do for a living?
I am a Navy Veteran with disability, work part time at Grand Slam Sports and have my own residential and commercial cleaning business named Alexander's Cleaning service that my wife and other partner owns in Nashville Tennessee and Virginia.

Did you play sports in High School / College / Pro?
I played baseball in High School but never got the opportunity to play college or pro level.

How did you get your start in softball and how did you get to the upper level?
Pete Garcia and PTI softball gave me my start and the highest I have ever played is C.

What was the most surprising difference between Conference play and non-Conference play when you made the jump?
The short amount of time I played is definitely caliber of pitching and everyone can hit the ball hard consistently 1-10. The best part about playing up is meeting new people and not having to deal with whining and complaining about who you are playing the next game. You pretty much know who the competition is and just go out there and play to win because in softball anything can happen.

Is there a player that you would compare your game to?
Wouldn't necessarily compare but I do like the choice of batting gloves Kyle Pearson of Smash It Sports chose because they were tough and durable. Pure Rawhide ranchers gloves.

What would you say is your career highlight to this point? Maybe one play or game that sticks out to you in particular?
Probably the two all-tournament trophies I have received but the most important one was when we took third in the Pic-O-Dixie in Chattanooga in 2015 with Team 615. Going to give it another shot this year on June 17-19.

The best play was 2016 running into right field from second base and making a sliding catch over my head for the third out to send the game into extra innings, winning run was on third.

In your career was there a single person (player/manager/coach) who had the most significant impact on your approach to the game? Why?
Player- I would have to say my mentor James ""Wash"" Washington, there always to give advice from day one of starting competitive ball. Gonna be a pleasure playing with him again.

Manager- Pete Garcia, even though we don't see eye to eye definitely gave me the chance and did a lot for my family.

Coach- Keith Doxey good guy and realizes the importance of player loyalty and consistency to keep a good team.

What advice can you give a young player trying to break into the upper level?
Give it your all day in and day out, take BP, ground balls, fly balls, learn to pitch, be a definite utility player because then no one can take you out of the game. Also take care of your body because no one else will.

What type of batting grip do you use and what ounce bat?
Pinky drop off the end with regular grip other hand.  28oz end load

What do you do in the offseason to prepare for the next softball season?
All kinds of weight training and treadmill sprints but I never really take off. I'm always hitting, catching, fielding or playing even in lite snow. It's my favorite thing to do. When I stop playing is the day they pry the bat and glove from my cold dead fingers.

What is your favorite sports team and your favorite sport other than softball?
Tennessee Titans, Boston Red Sox, Nashville Predators, and I like watching LeBron James.

Do you have any superstitions and if so, what are they?
I always tap the bat of the player that hits before me.

What would be your "at bat" music selection?
Started at the bottom now I'm here and Cut It

What is the best improvement upper level softball could make?
Not sure but the cut bat issue is getting out of hand somewhat. I have seen cut bats actually pass compression but bats that are just old not even close. These new bats are also failing with few swings but not busted and for people paying as much as they do for these bats its ashamed that we can't use them anymore after failed compression.

What is your favorite non-World tournament and why?
Pic-O-Dixie, Chronicle, Beast of the East, The Dudley in VA Beach, HOF Peters Creek

What is the best softball field/complex you have played at and why?
Myrtle Beach AstroTurf fields
ESPN Disney but looking forward to the new USSSA complex coming soon.

Where is the best place to eat on the road after a game?
Buffalo Wild Wings, Hooters, Twin Peaks and BB Kings

What is the funniest thing you have ever seen on a softball field?
Probably when we were playing PSA Circuit ball and Nick "Central" Goins is so drunk on moonshine that he's running up and down the baseline yelling after every hit "GOTTEM" smh and we actually won two games in a row and moved onto Sunday morning because he was talking so much crap. Hilarious??

Tell us something about you that most would never know about you?
I have a giving and soft heart for people in need but because I don't smile much on my face you would never know.

What was your favorite sports related gift you have ever given or received?
My favorite without a doubt is my custom glove my Pete and Allison of PTI softball Virginia but every time I can buy gear for my kids and see a smile on their face it is unexplainable how much joy that brings me.

Talk about a humble ball player that will always give his all regardless of what his body tells him. Very strong hitter and on the field watch out…wherever he is the spot is closed!
