Cal Ford

USSSA Playing History

Why do you like the game of softball?
I like to travel and compete at a high level.   It keeps me young.

Who is the best softball player you have ever seen play?
There are so many that I respect and hold in the same regard.

What position do you play?
First base and catcher/hope one day to go back in the outfield.

Where do you call home?
Ontario, CA

What do you do for a living?
Truck driver

Did you play sports in High School / College / Pro?
Football, basketball and baseball in high school, basketball in junior college and signed out of high school in the minors with the Cubs.

How did you get your start in softball and how did you get to the upper level?
I had a friend that asked me to come out and play league night back around 1993 and it came so easy to me that I was playing tournies soon after that.   Four years ago I was playing Toys for Tots in the open and Jimmy Torres approached me, which was my start in the conference.

What batting grip do you use?
Hand over hand

What is your favorite sports team?
49'ers, Lakers and the SF Giants

What is your favorite sport other than softball?
Basketball

Do you have any superstitions and if so, what are they?
Well, I'm not superstistious, but I do re-tape all my bats before every tournament.

What is your most memorable softball moment?
Good one was winning the MLK 2 years in a row.  The bad…  breaking my ankle in Cinci 2008.

Is slowpitch softball a sport or a game?
It's both.   I take it so serious that it's a sport, but have so much fun, it's got to be a game, too.

What is the best improvement upper level softball could make?
None that I can think of.

What is your favorite non-World tournament?
Dudley by far.   So many locals and fans come out, it's incredible.

What is the funniest thing you have ever seen on a softball field?
When we were taking BP and our pitcher pitched the ball outside and he got hit in the head from 6 feet away from our teammate.   So during the next game our pitcher got mad at the other team for going middle on him and they said, "your own teammate blew you up, why can't we?".
