Brandon Jonas

USSSA Playing History

Why do you like the game of softball?
I love the competition, but mostly love the fun times with all my teammates.

Who is the best softball player you have ever seen play?
All the guys in the conference are great ball players, but I’m going to say my uncle Chad Wright. He was the best all around outfielder I have ever seen.

What is your nickname in softball?
Everybody calls me B.

Where do you call home?
Claremont, NC

What do you do for a living?
Branch Manager for Johnstone Supply, we sale HVAC-R supplies.

How did you get your start in softball and how did you get to the upper level?
Started out playing in High School with my dad on Carroll’s Concrete an E team. Played 2nd base for them for a few years. Moved up to Birchfield Log Homes’ C/D team and volunteered to pitch one weekend when our pitcher was out. From there my softball career took off. Got picked up by Gas It a few years later, and last year Chyenne Brooks gave me a shot with Taylomade.

What position do you play?
Pitcher

What do you do in the offseason to improve your pitching?
I usually try and throw about 50 or so pitches after I take BP.  I also let my wife hit tennis balls at me from a short distance.

What do you do in the offseason to prepare for softball?
I take BP a few days a week when it’s not too cold, and try and stay in shape.

What is your favorite sports team?
New York Yankees and Minnesota Vikings

What is your favorite sport other than softball?
Love to play golf with my dad, but love watching football

What is your most memorable softball moment?
That would be this year, finishing 2nd at the major as a 16 seed(don’t know if that will happen again) and making the All World team.

What was it like to lose your first game at the major and come all the way through to the finals?
When we lost the first game you kind of figure you’re going to play 1 or 2 more games and then have a free weekend.  When we won the first 2 games on Saturday we all thought we had a shot to do something special.  Heading into the GTL game we were just happy to be there, and then winning that game was probably our biggest win of the tourney.  We were tired and down to our last out at one point, and somehow pulled off the win.  Then getting back to the championship on Sunday was a great feeling.  All in all it was the best weekend of the year by far. We had underachieved all year, and to finish the year off like that was great.

Is slowpitch softball a sport or a game?

Definitly a sport.  If it were just a game we wouldn’t care so much about it.

What is the best improvement upper level softball could make?
This isn’t just for upper level but for all levels.  We got to do something about the bats.  I hate facing(as Chad Loudon would say) 11 Greg Connell’s in league ball every night.  It’s bad enough wearing a mask on the weekends, but in league ball, come on.

What is your favorite non-World tournament?
Any backyard tourney with my buddies.

What is the funniest thing you have ever seen on a softball field?
There’s a lot, but one that sticks out is when I played with Birchfield.  We had a guy named John Lyda catching and he had a fart machine in his pocket all weekend.  Everytime a batter got in the box or got ready to swing, he would hit the button on the machine.  We laughed all weekend at batters thinking he really farted. Fun times.
