2014 USSSA Hall of Famer Bobby Hughes!

Bobby Hughes

USSSA Playing History

Major Players List

2012 Interview

Why do you like the game of softball?
I really enjoy wearing my sweaty uniform into eating establishments after a game.  That way the people dining along side me know that I play men's slowpitch softball at a very high level!  No jean shorts!

Who is the best softball player you have ever seen play?
Tough one Dale!!! Hmmm… Well one night at league we were short a player.    Greg Hartwick's dad rolls up in cutoff khaki pants and some Chuck Taylors.  Dude went 7 for 7 and was laying balls in the gaps like it was his job, all the while holding down the catching duties with very few past balls and throwing the ball back to the pitcher on most tries!!  So, statistically speaking Mr Hartwick… Never seen him make an out!

What is your nickname in softball?
    Strawberry Shortcake

Where do you call home?
    Jonesboro, Arkansas

What do you do for a living?
    Drug Dealer (legal kind)

Did you play sports in High School / College / Pro?
High School: Played drums for tribute band to that Swedish super group ABBA, and a little baseball on the side.

College: Was a student first as I never missed a class that was in reasonable walking distance or had a lot of pretty sorority girls in it.   Played on the baseball team at the U of Arkansas(GO HOGS) when i wasn't studying or at a teatherball tournament.

Pro: Turned down the lure of the Tetherball Circuit and signed with Montreal Expos.  Was with Expos until The Brass and I had a huge disagreement!  I felt like I had the skill sets to stick around and someday have a shot at the big leagues… THEY DISAGREED and asked me to leave.     In 1994 (while I was still with the organization) the Expos finished with the best record in baseball.  In 1995, the year of my release, the Expos floundered in last place.  Coincidence- HARDLY!!!

How did you get your start in softball and how did you get to the upper  level?
Got my start when a guy called me and asked if I wanted to play with his team.  Got to the upper level when another guy called me and asked me to play on a different team.  Moral of the story is the more things change the more they stay the same.  And special thanks to Alexander Graham Bell for inventing the telephone.

What position do you play?
I can play some outfield and I coach a mean third.  I thought about trying some infield but the ball comes through there way too fast and I imagine it really smarts when it hits you.

What batting grip do you use?
    Usually some type of tape.

What is your favorite sports team?
San Fransisco Freedom of the debunked Pro Cricket League.

What is your favorite sport other than softball?
Teather Ball, Cricket, and Cheese Rolling.  I feel like your asking a lot of very similar questions.

Do you have any superstitions and if so, what are they?
I normally dont reply to a battery of questions on email surveys due to the history of bad things that happen to the people I return them to.  Oh well, the only thing we have to fear is fear itself.

What is your most memorable softball moment?
    My memory stinks

Is slowpitch softball a sport or a game?
    YES

What is the best improvement upper level softball could make?
Covered dugouts and the Dudley and Smoky – I burn easily.

What is your favorite non-World tournament?
Rock Paper Scissors Tournament in Kalamazoo, Michigan

What is the funniest thing you have ever seen on a softball field?
Nothing funny about softball.  This is serious stuff Dale!!!  I mean when I dig in the box there is a man standing 50 some feet away whizzing balls by my chin 8 or 9 miles an hour!!!  No place for Tom Foolery!!
