The Seattle Derby Dual featured 5 Major teams, 24 teams overall, and 10 of the teams were from the Nationwide Conference USSSA.  The first Dual began on Thursday at high noon in perfect  70-degree weather.  All 5 of the fields had 300 foot fences, used a number of Conference umpires, and for the first time in a few years they used the regular Dudley Conference ball the Classic M 40/325.  The wind blew steadily in on 4 of the 5 fields which kept the scores in check for the most part.  In those first few rounds there were no real upsets as the Conference "pecking order" held.  In the second round Classic Glass/Easton a California 'AA' classed team survived a scare from MyAutoJack.com/Tunie Sports (AZ-B) but won 32-29.  Dan Smith/Menosse (CA-Major) knocked off Goodfellas/GTS (WA-B) a good local team 41-33.  Newbreed/GTS/Demarini (WA-M) beat Tradesmen Elite/Worth (UT-A) 37-11.  Resmondo/OA Apparel/H Auto/SPTank (FL-M) run ruled another top Washington 'B' team Dirty Sports/Savers/NW Assault/Miken 41-26.  In the lower half of the bracket OA Apparel/Broughton (IL-AA) got past Cheap Suits/Miken (CA-C) by 6, Racks/Sonnys/Athlon/Cutter (WY-M) 20 run ruled South Sound Syndicate, Killbombers/Demarini/GS Sports (TX-AA) held on to beat L&S Glass (CA-B) 25-21 in a spirited game over on field #2, and Smash It/Miken/Worth (NY-M) cruised past J&I/Westcoast (B) 27-12.

In the 4 quarterfinals which were all played back to back on the show field #3, Classic Glass used a 13 run third inning to go up 16-13 on Dan Smith.  But Dan Smith would come back with an impressive display of line drive hitting in the bottom of the 4th to go up 22-16 and the game was tied 23-23 after 5 innings.  Dan Smith outscored Classic Glass 9-8 in the 6th inning to take a 32-31 lead and Classic Glass 3rd baseman Matt Fox gave Classic the lead 34-32 on a home run in the top of the 7th.  But Dan Smith had the hammer and left fielder Colby Hughes hit a walk off homer in the bottom of the 7th and Dan Smith escaped to the final 4 with a 35-34 win!  In the next game at 7:30 PM Resmondo jumped on Newbreed 12-2 but Newbreed came back with a 13 run top of the 4th inning on home runs by Adam Rockoff and Lee Powers to grab a 15-12 lead.  Resmondo had completely dominated the game until that point.  In the top of the 6th Newbreed hit two grand slams to hold a 32-25 lead, and going to the bottom of the 7th Newbreed had increased the lead to 40-31.  Resmondo had just 2 homers left and needing 9 runs to tie they accidently hit a homer to start the inning and then when they were out of homers with the bases loaded and the winning run at the plate they accidently hit another homer to end the game with Newbreed winning 40-37.  The 3rd Semifinal at 8:30 PM had Smash It Sports who was clearly playing the best of any Major team cruise past Killbombers 27-12, and in the nightcap Racks pulled away from OA Apparel late to win 48-32.

In the semifinals which were played Friday morning Racks grounded into two double plays vs Smash It Sports in the first two innings and got HAMMERED 36-2!  WOW.  And in the other semifinal Newbreeds defense allowed them to beat Dan Smith who wasn't as crisp with the gloves and Newbreed finally separated and left Dan Smith on the field in the 6th with a 43-27 victory.  The game featured a play by the Newbreed pitcher Justin Mucciarelli who got a piece of a line drive up the middle and as it trickled away between 1st and 2nd base he ran and did a soccer style slide kick to get the runner at 2nd base.

In the winner's final Smash It Sports led 5-3 over Newbreed as left fielder Jason Branch threw a Newbreed runner out at the plate trying to score on a single from second base and the score was knotted at 15-15 after 3 complete innings.  But it was all Smash It from there on as they outscored Newbreed 35-7 the rest of the way and went on to win 50-22.

The loser's bracket was uneventful as the only upsets were Dirty Sports knocking off OA Apparel 23-18 and Classic Glass winning the battle of the northern California Glass companies 26-25 over L&S Glass.  Resmondo and Dan Smith met in the loser's semifinal with Dan Smith outslugging Resmondo 51-40 to advance to the loser's final against Newbreed.  There Dan Smith went up 28-15 going into the bottom of the 5th where they blanked Newbreed and beat them 41-26 even after a Nick Utley pinch hit grand slam extended the game in the 6th.

In the Championship game Friday night Smash It batted around in the bottom of the 4th to take an 18-13 lead but Dan Smith's backup pitcher Tom Bloom who pitched most of Friday hit a 3 run homer to tie the game at 18-18 in the top of the 5th.  But Smash It slugger Ryan Harvey hit a grand slam which led to an 8-run bottom of the 5th and a 26-18 lead and SIS held on to win fairly easily 34-23.  Note SIS star pitcher Andy Purcell tweaked an old oblique injury on his left side swinging in this game and was unable to play more than a backup role in the 2nd dual tournament.

Racks may have been this close to beating Smash It in the winner's final of dual #2

The 2nd Dual began at 3:30 PM on Friday while the first dual still had many hours left to go.  Some tired Conference teams took to the field and it showed at times.  L&S Glass survived a Newbreed comeback and scored 16 runs in the top of the 7th to win 47-41 in what many felt was the best game on Friday.  Colt 45's a 'C' team gave Smash It Sports all they could handle in the nightcap as SIS played without Andy Purcell (oblique injury) and Don Dedonatis Jr until it was late in the game and SIS needed to shut down the youngsters from Colt 45 in the 6th and 7th inning.  The defense did exaclty that and shut down Colt 45 and SIS pulled out a 34-32 2nd round win.  The Colt 45 pitcher was none other than Danny Connell who formerly pitched with Newbreed last year and he took a line drive directly off his upper right chest and continued on as if nothing happened.  That dude is TOUGH!

The 3rd round started on Saturday morning with Classic Glass going up 10-0 and 17-2 on Racks before Racks came all the way back to run rule Classic Glass 35-20.  Classic leaving 8 home runs on the table in that one?  Dan Smith crushed OA Apparel 42-15.  Smash It Sports survived another scare but won 36-30 over L&S Glass, and Resmondo 20 run ruled Killbombers 35-14 scoring 13 runs in the first inning.

In the semifinals which was all Major teams, Racks hammered Resmondo 32-11 winning by the 20-run mercy rule in just 4 innings.  And Smash It Sports shut down Dan Smith in a 26-11 victory.

In the winner's bracket final Smash It Sports went with a 10 man lineup and pinch hitter Ryan Harvey hit a 2 out 2 run homer and Andrew Collins hit a 3 run homer in the 4th to give them a 20-13 lead on Racks.  But Stuart Snell hit a homer to give Racks a 21-20 lead and SIS answered with a grand slam in the bottom of the 5th to wrest the lead back 29-23.  But a banged up and tired SIS team reached down deep in the bottom of the 6th as they batted around the entire order with two outs and grabbed a 37-32 lead.  Racks twice made diving attempts to end the inning with the lead but came up short and Smash It scored 7 runs after the 2nd out was made.  Andy Purcell who came in as a relief pitcher in the 6th actually batted twice in the inning and got a single and the second time up batted lefty and flew out.  The clutch hitting was too much and the defense made some nice plays at the end of the game and SIS advanced to the Sunday championship 37-35.

In the loser's bracket Newbreed who had suffered that upset loss to L&S Glass Friday night ended up winning 5 in a row in the loser's bracket including a 41-40 win over Dan Smith late Friday night to make it to Sunday.  And OA Apparel knocked off Tradesmen, MyAutoJack, and Resmondo to make it to Sunday where they run ruled Newbreed 36-21 and lost to Racks 27-20 when they had to forfeit due to a final injury to Mike Powers who dislocated a finger on a line drive.  That set up the championship between Smash It and Racks where it was all Smash It who won 34-14 and walked away with their 2nd tournament win of the week and 6th of the season.  SIS is now 43-5 on the year and has not lost to a non-Major team this season.

The tournament was well run and played.  Thank you to Strojan Kennison and his staff for the hospitality and hard work.  The umpiring was solid.  I felt Dan Smith shortstop Freddie Bynum probably made the most spectacular diving plays.  Smash It middle man Luis Reyna who was MVP of Dual 1 showed the most range and seemed to be a ball magnet out there for 4 days.  Smash It won with Jeff Graus doing 95% of the pitching in the second dual and without Brandon Dillon who was injured early in the first dual but they persevered unlike some of the other teams with injuries.

Long Bombers of the Week

Jon Kilburn went 4-5 with a grand slam homer and 7 RBI in one game for the oldscout detractors!

In all honesty that was a great game from Vivid13 but the long bombs were hit by Ryan Harvey, Erik Kanaby, Andrew Collins.  Curtis Stewart from OA hit a crowd pleaser.  And this guy from Colt 45 Myer got the biggest crowd reaction with a clutch homer off of Purcell.  Apparently Richie Myer hit a homer off of 4 different Major pitchers and hit .800 on the weekend.  A sweet swing.

10-0 on the weekend, 43-5 for the year and doing it without manager Rector, without Brandon Dillon, and with Andy Purcell injured for the 2nd tournament.  They refuse to lose and are working on one of the best seasons in Conference history.  Collins and Kanaby were providing the power, the defense was best in class, and even when tired and sore and missing players in the second dual they found ways to win early and dominate late.  Down 32-30 with 2 outs in the bottom of the 6th an injured Andy Purcell somehow got a base hit to left field against Racks and they batted around with 2 outs and went up 37-32 and won 37-35.

I did not apparently get a picture of Rulli or Graus who pitched the 2nd tournament and was Defensive MVP, sorry.

Dan Smith had some real nice wins over AA and Major teams on 300 foot fields and took a real step forward on the smaller fields by finishing 2nd in the first Dual.  They do need to score better against Smash It Sports.  Steven Lloyd (bruised heel) didn't playt the second tournament.  Tom Bloom the backup pitcher had some big wins for Dan Smith and the rumor is they are picking up John Williams from OA Apparel.  They used a lot of different lineups as they go with the hot stick each tournament.  The losses were to only top Major teams which is important.  Bynum was showing he can be a great shortstop, Hughes had the walk off homer, and Hammonds, Yeilding, and Durick moved up the lineup.  A good week overall for Dan Smith I would say.

Racks beat Resmondo but 1-4 against the Major division on the week.  They battled SIS as good as anyone but those late inning heroics by SIS cost Racks the winner's bracket finals game Saturday night.  They were so close on two diving plays that probably would have won them the game.  Mcclanahan and Steel did the pitching and rookie Jordan Spaulding continues to impress.  They played without big Jon Nelson.

Newbreed 3-2 vs the Major division on the weekend but couldn't break through to get to a championship game.  They did show great heart coming back in the loser's bracket after that shootout loss to L&S Glass.  Billy Messina joined the management group, Parfitt led off, the infield defense is close to the best in the game, but a few plays short of beating SIS in that first dual.  Mucciarelli is on the mend and was solid on the mound.  I said Trending Even because I thought they would get a win against SIS this weekend and did not.

Newbreed may have been this close to beating SIS

Mooch isn't 100% but his glove hand is on the mend.  Chente Granados with a backside bomb.

Billy Messina joined Newbreed I think mainly as a manager but also did some pitching

5th Resmondo/O.A.Apparel/H.Auto/Special  FL-Major

Total Record: 6-4
1st Dual: 4th 4-2
2nd Dual: 5th 2-2
Average Finish: 4.5
Wins: Dirty(B), CheapSuits(C), Classic(AA), Racks(M), J&I(B), Killbomb(AA)
Losses: Newbreed(M), DanSmith(M), Racks(M), OA(AA)

Resmondo 1-4 vs Major teams on the weekend.  Didn't crack the top 3.  Yes they played without injured Bubba Mack, Kyle Pearson, and Brad Reckart but a lot of teams were playing short handed.  After their last loss they got the "come to Helmer" meeting we saw in Chattanooga last year, "put in the work", "focus", "be prepared"…

Tied for 6th  OA APPAREL/BROUGHTON/KBI/EASTON  IL-AA

OA gets the "come to Wilkins" lecture.  Seemed to work.

Total Record: 6-4
1st Dual: 9th 1-2
2nd Dual: 3rd 5-0
Average Finish: 6.0
Wins: CheapSuits(C), Dirty(B), Tradesmen(A), MAJ(B), Resmondo(M), Newbreed(M)
Losses: Racks(M), Dirty(B), Dan Smith(M), Racks(M)

OA struggled in the first dual and lost early in the 2nd then ran the loser's bracket with huge wins over Resmondo and Newbreed to finish 3rd.  Hearing Williams is leaving for Dan Smith and Bowser was home at his grandmothers funeral but the team played well enough late to give some promise for upcoming events.  Powers dislocated a finger I heard in the last game.

Tied for 6th Killbombers / Demarini / GS Sports  TX-AA

Total Record: 5-4
1st Dual: 5th 3-2
2nd Dual: 7th 2-0
Average Finish: 6.0
Wins: LSGlass(B), GoodF(B), Dirty(B), Tradesmen(A), GoodF(B)
Losses: SmashIt(M), Dan Smith(M), Resmondo(M), Newbreed(M)

Not enough quality wins for a quality team.  But they did lose only to Major teams which is good.  Killbombers seem healthy and they have the horses to compete in AA.  Still waiting to see the best from this team.

Like Killbombers they only lost to Major teams.  Had Newbreed down 17-2 and left a pile of homers on the table in a run rule loss.  Like Killbombers this team has not played their best softball of 2017.

L&S Glass played as well as a B team could play in this tournament beating Newbreed and having some close games with teams like Classic Glass and Smash It Sports.  The middle man "Bo" I think his name is was flashing some leather and Cole Patterson is a warrior on the mound.  It was fun watching this team compete.

MAJ made a nice little run in the second tournament in a soft spot in the loser's bracket and got to play 10 games overall.  MAJ is for sure a top 5 'B' team in the nation.

Some of the great talent on MAJ – OF Nick Robertson and IF Josh Moore

Spaulding was correctly called out
