Nationwide Conference USSSA “Red” All Stars win PIF on a late power surge!

1st Place – Nationwide Conference USSSA Red All Stars

The 40th Annual Pif Major was won by the Nationwide Conference USSSA "Red" All Star team 18-16, as Chris Larsen hit a walk off 2 run homer set up by MVP Lee Powers game tying homer just two batters earlier.  The Red All Stars who trailed the Blue All Stars the entire game were down 6 runs going into the bottom of the 7th inning.  The game featured a plethora of outstanding defensive plays.  Canadas top team Pharmapar and U.S. based Checking/Smash It Sports finished in a tie for 3rd place.

A note, in the top of the 7th inning Red Left Fielder Neil Haglund appeared to slip to stop a hard single in left center field and he broke his arm arm in two places bracing his fall.  We wish Neil a speedy recovery and hope to see him soon.

The tournament featured the largest crowds in softball, a festival type atmosphere, a home run derby, and fireworks!  There were 4 divisions, 2 local and 2 invitational.  The women's Invitational was won by S&S Landscaping (Scott Sunderlands team) who defeated Twisted Sisters (Christan Dowlings team) in the finals 26-9.  The men's Invitational tournament had 10 teams split into two pools of 5 with the top 3 in each pool fighting for the title on Sunday in a single elimination format.  Each game used a 12 home run limit except the finals which was 16 and most games were played on the main field – Quintal – with 327-344-352-344-336 dimensions and the Conference ZN Classic M ball.  USSSA rules were used and there were two conference umpires.

A full report with pictures and video clips will be up here at SoftballCenter.com on Tuesday (as I am travelling all day Monday).
