2015 ASA 'B' National Tournament

The 2015 ASA 'B' National began on a beautiful fall Saturday morning at 9 AM at the 4 field ASA Hall of Fame Complex in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma with 16 very good 'B' teams. In the first round Budweiser/Promolink from Minnesota made short work of Izzy Sports/TKO/Miken from Oklahoma 21-4 on the stadium field. C-Town/GTS/Beus Excavation/Action Garage Door from Idaho knocked off Great Lakes Belt from Connecticut 23-17 back on field #4 to get their tournament started right. The All Army all stars led their game on field #3 most of the way before Fence Brokers Inc/Worth/Buzini from Arkansas came from behind and stole the game 16-14! And BBS/Mr. D's/Rip City from Minnesota pulled away mid game and knocked off ASPNation.com/A&A/Utility/KV Welding from Texas 24-17. At the 10:30 AM games the All Air Force stars crushed West Coast Monsta 19-4 in the stadium. All American Restoration/Combat from Minnesota solidly beat Nightmare from Missouri 18-12. JBL/Tailgaters/B&E the 2014 ASA 'C' champs from Pennsylvania jumped out to a 10-3 lead and controlled the entire game against 'B' favorite T's 13/Demarini from Nebraska and pulled off the shocking upset 26-12! And Above All Landscaping from New Jersey used up most of their allotted 6 home runs early to build a 12-3 lead and held off a late charge from VCH/Worth from Texas to win 16-14.

In the round of 8 which was played at 1:30 PM central time, C-Town/GTS jumped on Budweiser 12-0 and added 10 more runs in the 6th inning to win 22-12. C-Towns big 1st baseman Corey Gilbert with 2 homers and 6 RBI in the game. Fence Brokers scored 11 runs in the 2nd inning and got 4 hits from Brian McBryde to cruise past BBS 25-15. All Air Force never stopped scoring in a 32-24 win over All American Restoration. 2B Joey Chastain going 5-5 with a homer. And Above All Landscaping broke open an 8-8 game in the bottom of the 4th inning with 8 runs to get past JBL 23-13 on the stadium field. Leadoff man Tom Paturzo going 4-5 with 7 RBI and a grand slam home run!

In the final 4 of the winner's bracket which was played at 4:30 PM Fence Brokers jumped out to an 8-1 lead on a listless C-Town/GTS team who could get nothing going offensively. But FBI used up all of their homers and only scored 16 runs through 6 innings leaving the door open for a C-Town rally. C-Town scored 11 runs in the bottom of the 5th inning getting a 3 run homer from Mike Powers, a 2 run homer from leadoff man Brad Carlson, and 6 more hits after that. In the bottom of the 6th C-Town got a big 3 run homer out of Rusty Kawachi to take a 19-16 lead and they held FBI scoreless in the 7th to win and advance to Sundays winner's final. In the other final 4 game Above All Landscaping jumped all over All Air Force with leads of 12-0 and 22-10 and won 30-10. Clint Murray leading the way with 5 hits and 2 homers. In the loser's bracket JBL/Tailgaters had two nice wins to make it to Sunday and T's 13 came from behind to beat BBS 16-15 on a Reggie Schulte walk off home run to advance.

On Sunday there were 6 teams remaining and the action began at 9 AM. The winner's bracket finals in the stadium was all C-Town as they had leads of 8-2 and 23-3 after two innings and beat Above All Landscaping 24-6. C-Towns Pat Paschal was 3-3 with a homer. In the loser's bracket FBI overpowered JBL 27-18 as JBL ran themselves out of two innings trying to come back, and T's 13 came from an 8-6 deficit vs All Air Force to win 12-8 with big homers by Joe Bulens and Ryan Pennebaker late in a low scoring game. The two winners then met in the stadium where FBI scored a whopping 15 runs in the 3rd inning and won by the run rule 33-18. FBI middle infielder Steve Whaley was 5-5 with 2 homers and 6 RBI in the game. FBI advanced to face Above All Landscaping in the loser's bracket championship.

In that game FBI's Tim "bye bye" Bowser hit a first inning grand slam with no outs and FBI led 7-2 after one inning. Then Bowser made a diving catch in the bottom of the 2nd inning at first base and FBI center fielder Colby Hughes made an incredible assist to the plate to get an Above All runner in the 3rd and FBI led 8-4 going into the 4th inning. But Clint Murray hit a go ahead grand slam in the 10 run bottom of the 4th to give Above All a 14-8 lead. The lead swung back to FBI in the top of the 5th as Colby Hughes hit a grand slam of his own giving them a 15-14 lead but Above All outscored FBI 9-2 down the stretch and advanced to the championship game 23-17.

In the finals C-Town/GTS started off with 8-1 and 10-1 leads using up 4 of their 6 homers early on. Above All Landscaping answered with a 4 run top of 3rd to close gap to 10-5 as Tom Paturzo homered. Then C-Towns Corey Gilbert hit a homer off the the top of the left center field light tower, one of the longest or at least highest homers of the tournament to give them a 14-10 lead. Above Alls Clint Murray answered with a 2 run bomb of his own over the tree in left field, pitcher Jeff Graus tied the game with 2 run homer, and Jason Hoynowski gave them a 1 run lead with an RBI triple. A diving catch by C-Town left fielder Jonathan Gastineau ended the 5th inning with Above All on top 15-14. In the bottom of the 5th C-Towns Mike Powers hit a solo homer to tie the game at 15-15, pitcher Cole Patterson hit an RBI single and Brad Carlsen and Chris Hoshaw added RBI hits to give C-Town a 6 run inning and a 20-15 lead. Above All shortstop Jesse Campanelli ended the inning finally with a nice diving one hop stop in shallow left center field and a throw to 2nd for the force out. In the top of the 6th Above Alls Tom Paturzo singled and big David Miller hit a 2 run homer to cut the lead to 3. But C-Town got 3 more insurance runs on a Rick Cornu sacrifice fly and a Jonathan Gastineau 2 run bases loaded single with 2 outs to go up 23-17 going into the 7th. Above All made one last ditch effort on singles by Mike Dill, Jeff Graus, Jason Hoynowski, and Jesse Campanelli. Then got a two out triple by Paturzo and an RBI single by Miller to cut the lead to 23-22 before making the last out. Ryan Goodman at middle infield laying out for one of the best leap/diving line drive stabs of the season in the last inning and Patterson at pitcher snapping off a high line drive down the stretch.

It was one of those weekends where a group of players, some from GTS, some from Newbreed, and some from Classic Glass (most from the great Northwest) all came together and made a magical run to a National Championship. Great defense, timely hitting, big innings, and team work won it and it was fun to watch. CF Carlson and LF Gastineau set the table for Chris Hoshaw, newcomer Corey Gilbert, and veteran Pat Paschal. Then they had a little bit of a second "4 hitter" in Mike Powers. They got the big homer out of Rusty Kawachi to help them beat Fence Brokers. Great defense up the middle by Patterson at pitcher and Ryan "the Glove" Goodman. Congratulations to the C-Town/GTS/Beus/Action sponsors, managers, and players.

Note: They used all 30 of their homers

2nd Place – Above All Landscaping

from New Jersey 4-2 Record

Above All Landscaping opened with a 16-14 win over VCH in a game that wasn't as close as the score would indicate. Then they beat JBL in the stadium with an 8 run 4th inning and a 7 run 6th. Then they scored 22 runs in the first two innings against a hot hitting Air Force team and went on to win 30-10 to make it to Sunday undefeated. In the winner's final Sunday morning C-Town came out and put up 8 runs in the first and 15 runs in the 2nd inning on them and Above All never recovered in a 24-6 loss. Above All then took out their frustrations on FBI scoring 16 runs in the middle innings to get back to the championship game 23-17. In the finals C-Town held leads of 10-1 and 11-5 before Above All came back to make it close losing by 1 run.

Elrod gave way to Graus at pitcher on Sunday. Paturzo, Miller, and Murray provided a lot of the offense. And the team has a deceptively athletic outfield with Stamper, Hoynowski, and Rabon out there. The veteran Willie Allen ties it altogether defensively and rolls the top of the order when needed. A great run for Above All!

3rd Place – Fence Brokers Inc/Worth/Buzini

from Arkansas 4-2 Record

FBI came from behind to beat a feisty All Army team 16-14. Then picked up a solid win over BBS 25-15 on the strength of an 11 run 2nd inning. In the semi finals they jumped out to an 8-1 lead on C-Town but gave up 11 runs in the 5th and 5 runs in the 6th to lose 19-16? FBI gave away an opportunity to win the tournament in that game by not continuing to score. In the loser's bracket Sunday morning they outscored JBL 27-18 scoring in every inning, then blew away T's 13 with a 15 run 3rd inning, and had an 8-4 lead on Above All in the loser's final before dropping 23-17. Whaley shored up the defense up the middle and Colby Hughes played a nice center field while collecting 7 homers. Bowser made 1st team all tournament with 29 RBI and 15 runs scored.

Colby could have been defensive MVP as well.

4th Place – T's 13/Demarini

from Nebraska 4-2 Record

T's 13 took one on the chin in their opener when JBL/Tailgaters upset them and T's never could climb back into the game. In the loser's bracket they started an epic run with 4 straight wins including come from behind wins over BBS 16-15 on a Schulte walk off homer, and a 12-8 win over Air Force Sunday morning after being down 8-6 with big homers by Joey Bulens and Ryan Pennebaker. In the loser's bracket semi-final against FBI they just never could match FBI's 15 run 40 minute 3rd innings and lost by the run rule. Rettenmeier and Bulens up the middle make the game look effortless defensively and Demars, Schulte, and Mickey Roland provided the power. T's is playing in the ASA Super and ASA 'A' and should be a tough game in both.

Tied 5th Place – All Air Force

from USA 2-2 Record

All Air Force rained Air to Ground missiles at both WC Monsta and All American Restoration in their first two wins by a combined score of 51-28. Then they dropped two straight to eventual top 4 finishers Above All Landscaping and T's 13. The Air Force seemed much more athletic than in past years and their hitting and home run usage is better this year. The All Armed Forces team this year could be a good one! Manager Steve Shortland has been running this team for over 14 years and is also the manager of Team USA at the Border Battle each year. These guys know how to take a team photo…other teams take note! 🙂

from Pennsylvania 3-2 Record

The 2014 ASA 'C' champs pulled off the biggest upset of the tournament in their opener against T's 13 when they scored at least 5 runs in each of 4 different innings to win solidly 26-12! Chris Hoffer going 5-6 with 2 HR and 6 RBI in the game. In their second game they lost by 10 to Above All Landscaping in the stadium when an error opened the door for an 8 run 4th. In the loser's bracket JBL had nice wins over Great Lakes Belt and All American Restoration to make it to Sunday where they battled FBI hard but was out gunned 27-18. A nice showing for JBL who had a whopping .587 team average and hit 27 of their 30 HR.

1st Baseman Darren Graham carried a .714 average and hit 7 HR!

JBL picked up Chris Hoffer who led the team in hitting .739 with 8 HR and 19 RBI

Tied 7th Place – All American Restoration/Combat

from Minnesota 2-2 Record

All American Restoration started with a solid win over Nightmare 18-12 but couldn't match Air Forces energy or offense in a 2nd round 32-24 loss. In the loser's bracket they came from a 19-5 deficit vs All Army to pull off a 25-23 win. But late Saturday JBL beat them 22-16 when both teams scored in each of the first 5 innings. All American got their money's worth for 4 solid games. They were led offensively by veteran second baseman Eric O'Connell and outfielder Brandon Krause and Offensive Batting Champion Nick Peterson.

BBS infield – 3B Shannon Smith, SS Grant Grimmett, MI Shaun Beutner on the left side

BBS jumped on ASPNation in their opener up 10-1 in the 2nd inning and held them off 24-17. Lead off man Nick Sansone and pitcher Losson White with 4 hits a piece. In their second game they gave up 11 runs in the 2nd inning to FBI and never recovered in a 25-15 loss. In the loser's bracket they won a slugfest with WC Monsta 29-25 and then lost on a walk off homer to T's 13 16-15 after scoring in the top of the 7th to take the lead. 3rd baseman Jonathon Williams hit .812 with 7 HR and 19 RBI. Grant Grimmett threw in some great diving plays. Early in the tournament BBS played the best softball of any team, they just didn't keep it going.

WC Monsta 1-2

Monsta got beat badly by Air Force 19-4 in their opener.

Then they smoked Nightmare and had a chance against BBS but gave up to many errors and grounded into a DP with the bases loaded to lose 29-25 with 2 HR left on the table.

All Army 1-2

All 3 of Army's games were decided by 2 runs. They led Fence Brokers until the bottom of the 6th before losing 16-14. They held off ASPNation 17-15 for a big win. And they led All American Restoration 19-5 in the 3rd inning before losing 25-23. All Army has some talent to add to the All Armed Forces teams we will see when we get back to Oklahoma City for the ASA 'A'.
